Abstract

A method may be executed by one or more active capacitive styluses and a sensor controller connected to sensor electrodes. The method includes: a discovery step, executed by the sensor controller, of repeatedly sending out a discovery packet for detecting any of the active capacitive styluses; a discovery response step, executed by a first active capacitive stylus among the one or more active capacitive styluses, by which the discovery packet is detected, of returning a response packet to the discovery packet; a configuration step, executed by the sensor controller, of transmitting a configuration packet including time slot designation information that designates a first time slot to the first active capacitive stylus; and a data transmission step, executed by the first active capacitive stylus, of transmitting operation state data indicative of an operation state of the first active capacitive stylus using the designated first time slot.

Claims (49)

1. An active stylus, comprising:

a transmitter configured to transmit a stylus signal to the sensor panel; and

an integrated circuit configured to selectively enter different operation modes including:

a discovery mode in which detection of the control signal is repeatedly attempted;

a setting mode in which, after the control signal is detected, a communication setting for transmitting the stylus signal is configured;

a stroke mode in which, after the communication setting is configured, the stylus signal is repeatedly transmitted according to the configured communication setting; and

a hold mode in which, after the control signal ceases to be detected, the configured communication setting is maintained for a defined period of time.

2. The active stylus of claim 1 , wherein, in the stroke mode, the stylus signal is repeatedly transmitted according to the configured communication setting as long as the active stylus traverses over a surface of the sensor panel.

3. The active stylus of claim 1 , wherein,

the configured communication setting includes a local ID (LID) allocated to the active stylus, and

the LID is released after the defined period of time in response to not detecting the control signal for the defined period of time.

4. The active stylus of claim 1 , wherein,

the integrated circuit returns to the setting mode from the hold mode in response to not detecting the control signal for the defined period of time; and

the integrated circuit returns to the stroke mode from the hold mode in response to detecting the control signal in the defined period of time.

5. The active stylus of claim 4 , wherein the integrated circuit, in response to detecting the control signal in the defined period of time, returns to the stroke mode from the hold mode while maintaining the configured communication setting.

6. A method implemented by an active stylus, comprising:

detecting a control signal transmitted from a sensor panel;

transmitting a stylus signal to the sensor panel; and

selectively entering different operation modes including:

a discovery mode in which detection of the control signal is repeatedly attempted;

a setting mode in which, after the control signal is detected, a communication setting for transmitting the stylus signal is configured;

a stroke mode in which, after the communication setting is configured, the stylus signal is repeatedly transmitted according to the configured communication setting; and

a hold mode in which, after the control signal ceases to be detected, the configured communication setting is maintained for a defined period of time.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein, in the stroke mode, the stylus signal is repeatedly transmitted according to the configured communication setting as long as the active stylus traverses over a surface of the sensor panel.
