Abstract

A radiation shield assembly is described, configured to block radiation emanating from a radiation source from reaching a user. Two shields are supported by a support arm, and are configured to rotate relative to one another. This allows the shield to be easily configured and reconfigured as necessary to safely visualize various parts of a patient's body via radiography.

Claims (36)

1. A radiation shield assembly, configured to block radiation emanating from a radiation source below a table for supporting a patient, the radiation shield assembly comprising: (a) a first generally vertical shield supported by a support member; and (b) a second generally vertical shield supported by the support member;

wherein the first and the second generally vertical shields can be rotated relative to one another about an axis approximately parallel to a longitudinal axis of the support member; and

wherein the first and the second generally vertical shields have a height of at least a distance from an upper surface of the table to 175 cm (±10%) from a floor.

2. The radiation shield assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and the second generally vertical shields can be rotated relative to one another over an arc of at least about 90°.

3. The radiation shield assembly of claim 1 , wherein the support member is capable of supporting an entire weight of the radiation shield assembly.

4. The radiation shield assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second generally vertical shields has a radiopacity of least 0.5 mm lead equivalent.

5. The radiation shield assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first generally vertical shield comprises a hole configured to allow the passage of a human appendage therethrough.

6. The radiation shield assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and the second generally vertical shields can be rotated relative to one another about the longitudinal axis of the support member.

7. The radiation shield assembly of claim 1 , wherein the support member is a mast that is suspended by an overhead boom.

8. The radiation shield assembly of claim 1 , wherein the support member is configured to be supported by a ceiling.

9. The radiation shield assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first generally vertical shield is fastened to the support member via a first radiopaque joint.

10. A radiation shield assembly, configured to block radiation emanating from a radiation source below a table for supporting a patient, the radiation shield assembly comprising: (a) a first generally vertical shield supported by a support member; and (b) a second generally vertical shield supported by the support member;

wherein the first and the second generally vertical shields can be rotated relative to one another about an axis approximately parallel to a longitudinal axis of the support member; and

wherein the assembly is configured to position the first and the second generally vertical shields to protect a user's upper body from radiation emitted from said radiation source.

11. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the first and the second generally vertical shields can be rotated relative to one another over an arc of at least 90°.

12. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the support member is capable of supporting an entire weight of the radiation shield assembly.

13. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the first and the second generally vertical shields has a radiopacity of least 0.5 mm lead equivalent.

14. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the first generally vertical shield comprises a hole configured to allow the passage of a human appendage therethrough.

15. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the first generally vertical shield comprises a hold configured to allow the passage of a human appendage therethrough; and a flexible radiopaque member positioned to at least partially cover the hole and configured to allow the human appendage to pass through the hole.

16. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the support member is a mast that is suspended by an overhead boom.

17. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the support member is a mast that is suspended by an overhead boom and the overhead boom is supported by a second mast.

18. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the first generally vertical shield is fastened to the support member via a first radiopaque joint.

19. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the support member is configured to be supported by a ceiling.

20. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the support member is supported by a ceiling-mounted rail.

21. The radiation shield assembly of claim 10 , wherein the first and the second generally vertical shields can be rotated relative to one another about the longitudinal axis of the support member.

22. A radiation shield assembly, configured to block radiation emanating from a radiation source below a table for supporting a patient, the radiation shield assembly comprising: (a) a first generally vertical shield supported by a support member; and (b) a second generally vertical shield supported by the support member;

wherein the first and the second generally vertical shields can be rotated relative to one another about an axis approximately parallel to a longitudinal axis of the support member; and

wherein the radiation shield assembly is configured to position the first and the second generally vertical shields to extend from about a surface of the table to a level effective to prevent direct radiation from said source from reaching a user's head.

23. The radiation shield assembly of claim 22 , wherein the first and the second generally vertical shields can be rotated relative to one another over an arc of at least 90°.

24. The radiation shield assembly of claim 22 , wherein the support member is capable of supporting an entire weight of the radiation shield assembly.

25. The radiation shield assembly of claim 22 , wherein at least one of the first and the second generally vertical shields has a radiopacity of least 0.5 mm lead equivalent.

26. The radiation shield assembly of claim 22 , wherein the first generally vertical shield comprises a hole configured to allow the passage of a human appendage therethrough.

27. The radiation shield assembly of claim 22 , wherein the first generally vertical shield comprises a hole configured to allow the passage of a human appendage therethrough; and a flexible radiopaque member positioned to at least partially cover the hole and configured to allow the human appendage to pass through the hole.

28. The radiation shield assembly of claim 22 , wherein the support member is a mast that is suspended by an overhead boom.

29. The radiation shield assembly of claim 22 , wherein the support member is a mast that is suspended by an overhead boom; and wherein the overhead boom is supported by a second mast.

30. The radiation shield assembly of claim 22 , wherein the first generally vertical shield is fastened to the support member via a first radiopaque joint.
