Abstract

A power bank and holographic projection accessory intended for use with a portable electronic device. The accessory includes a holographic projection unit and an external power bank case attachable to the holographic projection unit. The external power bank case is configured to provide power to the holographic projection unit and to provide a video signal generated by the portable electronic device to the holographic projection unit. The holographic projection unit generates volumetric projections based upon the video signal.

Claims (29)

1 . A holographic projection unit, comprising:

a frame structure;

a touch screen supported by the frame structure;

a projector having a first end coupled to the frame structure by a first hinge element, the projector including a projector screen for generating images;

a semi-reflective element coupled to the frame structure by a second hinge element, the reflective element being moveable between an open position and a closed position wherein the semi-reflective element is oriented to reflect light from the images when in the open position in order to create volumetric images perceptible to a user of the holographic projection unit; and

a slide hinge system disposed at a second end of the projector, the slide hinge system including a positioning member through which the reflective element is translated when moving between the open position and a closed position.

2 . The holographic projection unit of claim 1 wherein the semi-reflective element is substantially parallel to the touch screen in the closed position and is not substantially parallel to the touch screen in the open position.

3 . The holographic projection unit of claim 1 further including an electrical interface for receiving a video signal, the video signal being provided to the projector for use in generating the images.

4 . The holographic projection unit of claim 1 wherein the semi-reflective element includes a transparent reflector coated with a polymer overlay.

5 . The holographic projection unit of claim 1 wherein the semi-reflective element is implemented as a micro-layered structure, the micro-layered structure including:

a first semi-reflective transparent layer having a first index of refraction, the first semi-reflect transparent layer having a first front surface and a first rear surface;

a second semi-reflective transparent layer having a second index of refraction different from the first index of refraction, the second semi-reflect transparent layer having a second front surface and a second rear surface, the second front surface abutting the first rear surface of the first semi-reflective transparent layer;

wherein the micro-layered structure is configured to reflect incident light as multiple reflections;

wherein a first portion of the incident light is reflected by the first front surface as a first reflection, a second portion of the incident light is reflected by the first rear surface as a second reflection, a third portion of the incident light is reflected by the second front surface as a third reflection and a fourth portion of the incident light is reflected by the second rear surface as a fourth reflection;

wherein the first reflection, the second reflection, the third reflection and the fourth reflection collectively form a projection of each image of the images wherein the projection of each image is perceived by a user of the optical projection system to be located behind the micro-layered structure.

6 . The holographic projection unit of claim 3 , further including:

a display controller for providing display driving signals to the projector in response to the video signal;

a touch screen controller for providing a touch signal in response to user input to the touch screen.

7 . The holographic projection unit of claim 6 wherein the display controller is included on a display printed circuit board, the display printed circuit board being disposed between a backing surface of the frame structure and a display screen of the projector.

8 . The holographic projection unit of claim 1 wherein the touch screen is generally rectangular in a front facing view of the holographic projection unit, the holographic projection unit further including a display bar arrangement positioned below a lower edge of the touch screen in the front facing view, the display bar arrangement being supported by the frame structure.

9 . The holographic projection unit of claim 8 wherein the display bar arrangement is configured to provide illumination complementary to the holographic images.

10 . The holographic projection unit of claim 7 , further including:

a display bar arrangement positioned proximate the touch screen;

a display bar controller configured to drive the display bar arrangement.

11 . The holographic projection unit of claim 2 wherein the semi-reflective element is, in the closed position, substantially parallel to the touch screen and to a display screen of the projector.

12 . The holographic projection unit of claim 1 wherein the semi-reflective element is substantially parallel to the touch screen in the closed position and is not substantially parallel to the touch screen in the open position.

13 . The holographic projection unit of claim 3 wherein the touch screen is disposed within a holographic display field associated with the holographic images, the holographic projection unit further including a touch screen controller for providing a touch signal to the electrical interface in response to user input to the touch screen;

wherein an external processor is configured to modify the video signal based on the touch signal so as to enable control of the holographic images in response to the user input.

14 . The holographic projection unit of claim 1 wherein the projector includes a screen of a first size and wherein the semi-reflective element is of a second size, the first size being substantially identical to the second size.
