Abstract

A cap and a processing vial configured for interlocking engagement. The processing vial includes a locking collar surrounding an open upper end of the processing vial with lateral through holes formed through the locking collar. The vial also includes a latch hook located above each through hole. The cap includes a latch collar extending about a lower portion of the cap, where the latch collar is configured to snap in beneath the latch hooks of the processing vial when the lower portion of the cap is inserted into the open upper end of the processing vial to lock the cap to the processing vial.

Claims (29)

1. A processing vial and a cap configured for interlocking engagement with the processing vial, wherein the processing vial comprises:

an open upper end;

a locking collar surrounding the open upper end with lateral through holes formed through the locking collar; and

a latch hook located above each through hole; and wherein the cap comprises:

a lower portion configured for insertion into the open upper end of the processing vial and configured to provide a sealing engagement between an outer surface of the lower portion of the cap and an inner surface of the opening of the processing vial;

an upper portion having an open end configured for engagement by a receptacle transport mechanism; and

a latch collar extending about the lower portion of the cap, wherein the latch collar is configured to snap in beneath the latch hooks of the processing vial when the lower portion of the cap is inserted into the open upper end of the processing vial to lock the cap to the processing vial.

2. The processing vial and cap of claim 1 , wherein the through holes formed in the locking collar of the processing vial are formed at opposed locations.

3. The processing vial and cap of claim 1 , wherein the cap further comprises an annular collar extending about the cap at a position between the upper portion and the lower portion.

4. The processing vial and cap of claim 1 , wherein the cap further comprises at least one seal ring extending about the lower portion of the cap below the latch collar.

5. The processing vial and cap of claim 1 , wherein the lower portion of the cap defines a plug that fits into the open upper end of the processing vial, thereby forming an interference or frictional fit with the processing vial.

6. The processing vial and cap of claim 1 , wherein the cap further comprises a rim surrounding the open end of the cap.

7. The processing vial and cap of claim 1 , wherein the processing vial has a conical shape.

8. The processing vial and cap of claim 1 , wherein each of the cap and the processing vial is formed from a plastic.

9. The processing vial and cap of claim 1 , wherein the processing vial contains a biological sample.

10. The processing vial and cap of claim 9 , wherein the biological sample is contained in an eluate.

11. The processing vial and cap of claim 9 , wherein the processing vial further contains a PCR master mix comprising a Taq DNA polymerase, deoxynucleoside triphosphates, and magnesium chloride.

12. The processing vial and cap of claim 9 , wherein the processing vial further contains an oil.

13. The processing vial and cap of claim 1 , wherein the open end of the cap is configured to be frictionally attached to a probe inserted into the open end.

14. A method for connecting a processing vial and a cap in interlocking engagement, the method comprising:

(a) inserting a probe of a pipettor into an upper end of the cap, thereby frictionally attaching the cap to the probe; and

(b) while the cap is engaged by the probe of the pipettor, inserting a lower portion of the cap into an open upper end of the processing vial, wherein the processing vial includes a locking collar surrounding the open upper end with lateral through holes formed through the locking collar and a latch hook located above each through hole, and wherein the cap comprises a latch collar that extends about the cap, and the latch collar snaps beneath the latch hooks of the processing vial when the lower portion of the cap is inserted into the open upper end of the processing vial, thereby securing the cap to the processing vial.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising ejecting the cap from the probe after step (b).

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, prior to step (a), dispensing a fluid into the processing vial with a disposable pipette tip in a frictional fit with the pipettor.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the fluid comprises a biological sample.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the biological sample is contained in an eluate.

19. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, prior to step (a), dispensing a PCR master mix into the processing vial, the PCR master mix comprising a Taq DNA polymerase, deoxynucleoside triphosphates, and magnesium chloride.

20. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, prior to step (a), dispensing an oil into the processing vial with a second pipette tip engaged in a frictional fit with the probe of the pipettor.

21. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, after step (b), moving the cap and processing vial secured thereto with the pipettor from a first location to a second location of an instrument, and, at the second location, ejecting the cap from the probe.
