Abstract

Systems and methods for nitric oxide generation are provided. In an embodiment, an NO generation system can include a controller and disposable cartridge that can provide nitric oxide to two different treatments simultaneously. The disposable cartridge has multiple purposes including preparing incoming gases for exposure to the NO generation process, scrubbing exhaust gases for unwanted materials, characterizing the patient inspiratory flow, and removing moisture from sample gases collected. Plasma generation can be done within the cartridge or within the controller. The system has the capability of calibrating NO and NO 2 gas analysis sensors without the use of a calibration gas.

Claims (31)

1. A nitric oxide (NO) generation system, comprising:

at least one plasma chamber configured to output a product gas containing nitric oxide by generating a plasma from a flow of a reactant gas; and

at least one controller configured to regulate the amount of nitric oxide in the product gas using one or more parameters as an input to the controller, the one or more parameters including information relating to at least one of the reactant gas, the product gas, and an inspiratory gas into which at least a portion of the product gas flows;

wherein the at least one controller is configured to control a flow of purge gas to purge at least one of NO and NO 2 from the system and a delivery device configured to deliver at least a portion of the product gas to a patient, using a flow of a purge gas,

wherein the purge gas is flowed for a period of time, the period of time being related to a volume of purge gas required to be moved to clean out at least one of the system and the delivery device of NO and NO 2 .

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to purge at least one of NO and NO 2 at termination of treatment.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to purge at least one of NO and NO 2 between breaths.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to purge at least one of NO and NO 2 at a cessation of plasma generation.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a pump configured to run for a period of time to purge at least one of the system, the delivery device, and a respiratory device coupled to the delivery device, the period of time being related to a volume of purge gas required to be moved to purge at least one of the system and the delivery device of NO and NO 2 .

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the pump is configured to supply the flow of purge gas, the pump being configured to run after cessation of plasma generation in the at least one plasma chamber to implement the purge from at least one of the system and the delivery device.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the pump is configured to run for a number of pump rotations to purge the system, the number of pump rotations being related to a volume of purge gas required to be moved to purge at least one of the system and the delivery device of at least one of NO and NO 2 .

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to purge until a NO sensor or a NO 2 sensor indicates an acceptable level of NO or NO 2 .

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein a source of the purge gas is in the form of a pressurized reservoir such that the pressure in the reservoir is used to push the purge gas.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the purge gas is ambient air.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the purge gas is the reactant gas.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the purge gas is an inert gas.

13. A nitric oxide (NO) generation system, comprising:

at least one plasma chamber configured to output a product gas containing nitric oxide by generating a plasma from a flow of a reactant gas; and

at least one controller configured to regulate the amount of nitric oxide in the product gas using one or more parameters as an input to the controller, the one or more parameters including information relating to at least one of the reactant gas, the product gas, and an inspiratory gas into which at least a portion of the product gas flows;

wherein the at least one controller is configured to send a purge gas through the system and a delivery device configured to deliver at least a portion of the product gas to a patient to push product gas through a delivery system.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the reactant gas source is in the form of a pressurized reservoir.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the purge gas source is at least one of ambient air, the reactant gas, and an inert gas.

16. A method for generating nitric oxide (NO), comprising:

ionizing a reactant gas in a plasma chamber of an NO generation system to generate a plasma for producing a product gas containing nitric oxide within a flow comprising the reactant gas;

controlling the amount of nitric oxide in the product gas using one or more parameters as input to a control algorithm used by one or more controllers to control the plasma chamber, at least one of the one or more parameters being related to information relating to at least one of the reactant gas, the product gas, and an inspiratory gas into which at least a portion of the product gas flows; and

purging, with a purge gas, the NO generation system and a delivery line configured to deliver at least a portion of the product gas to a patient to remove at least one of NO and NO 2

wherein the purge gas is flowed for a period of time related to a volume of purge gas required to be moved to clean out at least one of the NO generation system and the delivery line of NO and NO 2 .

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the purging includes the controller controlling a pump to run after cessation of plasma generation in the at least one plasma chamber.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the controller runs the pump for a number of pump rotations to purge the NO generation system, the number of pump rotations being related to a volume of purge gas required to be moved to clean out the at least one of the system and the delivery line of at least one of NO and NO 2 .

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the controller runs the pump based on information from one or more of a NO sensor and a NO 2 sensor.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the pump runs until a threshold amount of at least one of NO and NO 2 are detected by the sensors.
