Abstract

Flexible BMG elements and methods for making the flexible BMG elements. The BMG element contains a main body made from a BMG material and may further contain a flange. The main body may contain at least one opening. The main body may be a thin-walled structure that is compressible, extendable, and/or bendable. A surface of the main body may be corrugated with a series of ridges and furrows.

Claims (23)

1. A flexible BMG element, the flexible element comprising:

a main body with at least one opening, wherein the main body is made from a BMG material, wherein the main body comprises a thin-walled structure that is compressible, extendable, and/or bendable, and wherein the thin wall is a closed surface such that neither gas nor liquid passes through the thin wall.

2. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the main body comprises a cylindrical component, wherein a surface of the cylindrical component is corrugated.

3. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the main body comprises a thin-walled polygon-shaped component, wherein a surface of the component is corrugated.

4. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the main body is a thin-walled cylindrical component, wherein a surface of the cylindrical component is a repeating pattern of fine meshes such that the repeating pattern facilitates the bending of the main body.

5. The flexible BMG element of claim 4 , wherein the main body has an inner diameter less than or equal to 6 mm and wherein the main body is biocompatible and configured to be inserted in a human body.

6. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the main body has a length-to-outer diameter ratio between 0.25 and 80.

7. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the main body has an outer diameter-to-wall thickness ratio larger than 8.

8. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the main body has a wall thickness between 0.0005 mm and 3 mm.

9. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the BMG material used to manufacture the main body has formability of 3 mm or higher.

10. The flexible BMG element in claim 1 , wherein the main body comprises a non-flexible component.

11. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein a wall thickness uniformity of the main body is under 35% or above 50%, wherein the wall thickness uniformity is defined by [(t max −t min )/t min ]*100, wherein t max and t min are the maximum and the minimum wall thickness, respectively.

12. The flexible BMG element in claim 1 , wherein the main body comprises a corrugated portion and the outer diameter of the corrugated portion is not constant along a length direction.

13. The flexible BMG element in claim 1 , wherein the main body comprises an origami structure, comprising a crease configured to fold the main body.

14. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the flexible BMG element is a bellow, a flexible hose, an expansion joint, or a medical stent.

15. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the flexible BMG element is used to store and/or transfer media.

16. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the BMG material comprises, as a constituent element, one or more of: Zr, Ti, Ni, Pd, Mg, Al, La, Ce, Fe, Pt, Nb, Ir, Mo, W, Cu, Au, Ag, Hf, Co, Gd, Be, B, C, P, Si, and Rh.

17. The flexible BMG element of claim 1 , wherein the BMG material is one of: Zr 44 Ti 11 Cu 10 Ni 10 Be 25 , Zr 41 Ti 14 Cu 12.5 Ni 10 Be 22.5 , Zr 35 Ti 30 Cu 7.5 Be 27.5 , Zr 46 Cu 46 Be 8 , Zr 57 Nb 5 Cu 15.4 Ni 12.6 Al 10 , Zr 65 Al 10 Ni 10 Cu 15 , Zr 65 Al 7.5 Ni 10 Cu 12.5 Ag 5 , Zr 66.4 Nb 6.4 Cu 10.5 Ni 8.7 Al 8 , Zr 55 Cu 30 Al 10 Ni 5 , Zr 46 Cu 46 Be 8 , Ti 41 Zr 25 Fe 6 , Ti 45 Zr 20 Be 29 Fe 6 , Ti 35 Zr 30 Be 25 , Ti 30 Zr 35 Be 25 , Ti 40 Zr 10 Cu 34 Pd 14 Sn 2 , Ti 40 Zr 10 Cu 32 Pd 14 Sn 4 , Pd 43 Cu 27 Ni 10 P 20 , Pd 40 Ni 10 Cu 30 P 20 , Pd 40 Ni 40 P 20 , Pt 57.5 Ni 14.7 Cu 5.3 P 22.5 , Au 49 Ag 5.5 Pd 2.3 Cu 26.9 Si 16.3 , Ni 45 Pd 35 P 17 B 3 , Ni 45 Ti 20 Zr 25 Al 10 , Ni 40 Ti 17 Zr 28 Al 10 Cu 5 , Ni 62 Pd 19 Si 2 P 17 , Cu 46 Zr 42 Al 7 Y 5 , Mg 65 Cu 25 Y 10 , Mg 65 Cu 7.5 Ni 7.5 Zn 5 Ag 5 Y 10 , La 55 Al 25 Co 5 Cu 10 Ni 5 , Fe 41 Co 7 Cr 15 Mo 14 C 15 B 6 Y 2 (in atomic percent), and a mixture thereof.
