Abstract

A method according to certain embodiments generally involves operating a system including an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a base station. The base station includes a nest including an upper opening having an upper opening diameter and a lower opening having a lower opening diameter less than the upper opening diameter. The lower opening is accessible from within the base station. The method generally includes landing the UAV within the nest such that a portion of the UAV is accessible via the lower opening, releasably attaching a load to the UAV, and operating the UAV to deliver the load to a destination.

Claims (16)

1. A mobile base station for landing an unmanned aerial vehicle having a plurality of legs that define an effective landing diameter, the mobile base station comprising:

a vehicle comprising a stowage compartment and a roof, the roof separating an interior of the stowage compartment from an exterior of the stowage compartment; and

a nest coupled to the roof, the nest having a central axis and comprising:

a sidewall having an upper opening and a lower opening, the sidewall extending between the upper opening and the lower opening in a direction that is non-parallel and non-perpendicular to the central axis, the upper opening is larger than the effective landing diameter, the lower opening is smaller than the effective landing diameter, the lower opening is accessible from the interior of the stowage compartment;

a plurality of electrical contacts positioned between the upper opening and the lower opening of the sidewall and at a location at which the sidewall has a diameter that is not smaller than the effective landing diameter, wherein the sidewall is oriented to facilitate direct slideable displacement of a first electrical contact surface of the plurality of legs along an inner surface of the sidewall from a first location between the upper opening and the plurality of electrical contacts to a second location at which the first electrical contact surface and a second electrical contact surface of the plurality of legs are in direct contact with, and electrically coupled to, a different one of the plurality of electrical contacts.

2. The mobile base station of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electrical contacts are electrically coupled to a battery of the vehicle, the battery also electrically coupled to one or more electrical systems of the vehicle.

3. The mobile base station of claim 2 , wherein the battery is electrically coupled to a prime mover of the vehicle.

4. The mobile base station of claim 3 , wherein the prime mover is operable to rotate a wheel of the vehicle.

5. The mobile base station of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle is an air delivery vehicle.

6. The mobile base station of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle is a water delivery vehicle.

7. The mobile base station of claim 1 , wherein the nest extends through the roof such that the upper opening and the lower opening are positioned on opposite sides of the roof.

8. The mobile base station of claim 7 , wherein the lower opening is positioned in a loading area of the vehicle.

9. The mobile base station of claim 1 , wherein the nest further comprises a movable base plate operable to close the lower opening.

10. The mobile base station of claim 1 , wherein the lower opening is selectively open to the stowage compartment.

11. The mobile base station of claim 1 , further including a cover that is selectively displaceable between a closed position and an open position, the cover enclosing the upper opening when at the closed position.

12. The mobile base station of claim 11 , wherein the cover comprises at least one panel, the at least one panel is retractable along a plane occupied by the at least one panel as the at least one panel is displaced from the closed position to the open position.
