Abstract

A method for subsurface sequestration of carbon includes injecting a treatment composition comprising a mineralization accelerant into a subterranean zone at least partially saturated with saline water. The mineralization accelerant is reactive with carbon dioxide to form bicarbonate. The method further includes injecting carbon in the form of carbon dioxide into the subterranean zone and sequestering at least a portion of the carbon in the subterranean zone by precipitation in the subterranean zone of a carbonate mineral formed from reaction of the bicarbonate with metal cations dissolved in the saline water. At least a portion of the bicarbonate is formed by reaction of the mineralization accelerant with the carbon dioxide.

Claims (26)

1. A method for subsurface sequestration of carbon, the method comprising:

injecting, into a subterranean zone at least partially saturated with saline water, a treatment composition comprising a mineralization accelerant

injecting carbon in the form of carbon dioxide into the subterranean zone; the carbon dioxide reacting in the subterranean zone with the mineralization accelerant to form bicarbonate; and

sequestering at least a portion of the carbon in the subterranean zone by precipitation in the subterranean zone of a carbonate mineral formed from reaction in the subterranean zone of the bicarbonate with metal cations dissolved in the saline water.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mineralization accelerant comprises one or more of:

an amino acid;

a sodium salt of an amino acid;

a potassium salt of an amino acid;

an alkyl amine;

an aromatic amine.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment composition is an aqueous solution.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein a concentration of the mineralization accelerant in the aqueous solution is equal to or greater than 0.1 percent weight-for-weight.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the concentration of the mineralization accelerant in the aqueous solution is equal to or greater than 0.5 percent weight-for-weight.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the concentration of the mineralization accelerant in the aqueous solution is equal to or greater than one percent weight-for-weight.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mineralization accelerant, when injected into the subterranean zone, forms micelles dispersed within the saline water.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment composition and the carbon dioxide are injected simultaneously as a mixture.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment composition and the carbon dioxide are injected sequentially.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein treatment composition and the carbon dioxide are injected in alternating aliquots.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the carbon dioxide is injected into the subterranean zone as a supercritical fluid.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the carbon dioxide is injected into the subterranean zone as a component of an aqueous solution.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the saline water has a salinity of greater than 1 percent.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subterranean zone comprises a sedimentary rock.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment composition and the carbon dioxide are injected simultaneously as an emulsion.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the injecting of carbon dioxide into the subterranean zone is via one or a plurality of wells, and wherein a total volume of all fluids injected into the subterranean zone via the one or the plurality of wells comprises, on average per well per month, at least seventy weight percent carbon dioxide and less than thirty weight percent water.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment composition and the carbon dioxide are injected simultaneously as a foam mixture.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the injecting of carbon dioxide into the subterranean zone is at least in part as a via one or a plurality of wells, and wherein a total volume of all fluids injected into the subterranean zone via the one or the plurality of wells comprises, on average per well per month, at least fifty weight percent carbon dioxide and less than fifty weight percent water.
