Abstract

A decade from now, a visit to the supermarket will be a very different experience than the familiar experiences of decades past. Product packaging will come alive with interactivity—each object a portal into a rich tapestry of experiences, with contributions authored by the product brand, by the store selling the product, and by other shoppers. The present technology concerns arrangements for authoring and delivering such experiences. A great variety of other features and technologies are also detailed.

Claims (36)

1. A method comprising the acts:

receiving image data depicting artwork on a consumer packaged good captured by a camera;

detecting a digital watermark signal in the artwork;

determining, using the digital watermark signal, pose information characterizing depiction of the consumer packaged good in the image data; and

presenting an augmentation associated with the consumer packaged good on a user's display device, wherein presentation of the augmentation is adapted in accordance with the determined pose information.

2. The method of claim 1 in which the determining act includes transforming image data into a spatial frequency domain representation.

3. The method of claim 1 in which the pose information indicates a distance between the camera and the consumer packaged good.

4. The method of claim 1 in which the pose information indicates an inclination of the consumer packaged good as depicted in the received image data.

5. The method of claim 1 that includes decoding payload data from the digital watermark signal, and identifying said augmentation based on said decoded payload data.

6. The method of claim 1 in which said digital watermark signal is redundantly tiled in blocks on said artwork, and the method includes identifying a particular one of said blocks depicted in the image data by reference to fingerprint data extracted from the image data.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein presentation of the augmentation is adapted in size and perspective in accordance with the determined pose information.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the augmentation is presented on a left side, or a right side, of the consumer packaged good as depicted in the image data, in accordance with the determined pose information.

9. A portable user system comprising:

a camera;

a display;

a processor and memory, the memory containing instructions configuring the processor to perform actions including:

receiving image data depicting artwork on a consumer packaged good captured by the camera;

detecting a digital watermark signal in the artwork;

determining, using the digital watermark signal, pose information characterizing depiction of the consumer packaged good in the image data; and

presenting an augmentation associated with the consumer packaged good on the display, wherein presentation of the augmentation is adapted in accordance with the determined pose information.

10. The system of claim 9 in which the determining action includes transforming the image data into a spatial frequency domain representation.

11. The system of claim 9 in which the pose information indicates a distance between the camera and the consumer packaged good.

12. The system of claim 9 in which the pose information indicates an inclination of the consumer packaged good as depicted in the received image data.

13. The system of claim 9 that includes decoding payload data from the digital watermark signal, and identifying said augmentation based on said decoded payload data.

14. The system of claim 9 in which said digital watermark signal is redundantly tiled in blocks on said artwork, and said actions include identifying a particular one of said blocks depicted in the image data by reference to fingerprint data extracted from the image data.

15. The system of claim 9 wherein presentation of the augmentation is adapted in size and perspective in accordance with the determined pose information.

16. The system of claim 9 wherein the augmentation is presented on a left side, or a right side, of the consumer packaged good as depicted in the image data, in accordance with the determined pose information.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a computer system, cause the computer system to perform operations comprising:

receiving image data depicting artwork on a consumer packaged good captured by a camera;

detecting a digital watermark signal in the artwork;

determining, using the digital watermark signal, pose information characterizing depiction of the consumer packaged good in the image data; and

presenting an augmentation associated with the consumer packaged good on a user's display device, wherein presentation of the augmentation is adapted in accordance with the determined pose information.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 in which the determining act includes transforming image data into a spatial frequency domain representation.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 in which the pose information indicates an inclination of the consumer packaged good as depicted in the received image data.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 in which said digital watermark signal is redundantly tiled in blocks on said artwork, and the instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a computer system, cause the computer system to perform an operation comprising: identifying a particular one of said blocks depicted in the image data by reference to fingerprint data extracted from the image data.

21. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 wherein presentation of the augmentation is adapted in size and perspective in accordance with the determined pose information.
