Abstract

The invention relates to a device for use in the transcatheter treatment of mitral valve regurgitation, specifically a coaptation enhancement element for implantation across the valve; a system including the coaptation enhancement element and anchors for implantation; a system including the coaptation enhancement element, catheter and driver; and a method for transcatheter implantation of a coaptation element across a heart valve.

Claims (40)

1. A coaptation implant system comprising:

a coaptation implant comprising:

a coaptation surface configured for an anterior leaflet of a valve to coapt against;

a superior edge, lateral edges, and an inferior edge, wherein a distance between the lateral edges generally decreases toward the inferior edge;

a hub; and

at least one strut, wherein a strut of the at least one strut extends from the hub; and

a helical anchor configured to be rotated relative to the hub to engage tissue, wherein a surface of the coaptation implant is configured to balloon or stretch toward the left atrium during systole, while the helical anchor remains unmoved.

2. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to balloon or stretch toward the left atrium thereby enhancing the seal between the coaptation surface of the coaptation implant and the anterior leaflet during systole.

3. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein during diastole, the surface of the coaptation implant is configured to return to an initial position in which the surface lies more distally.

4. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to provide an improved blood flow path between the atrium and ventricle during diastole, improving outflow from the atrium past the coaptation implant.

5. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to overlie a posterior leaflet.

6. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the helical anchor is configured to attach to the superior surface of the posterior annulus, the posterior atrial wall, or the annulus itself.

7. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , further comprising an additional helical anchor.

8. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the coaptation implant comprises a passive implanted device.

9. The coaptation implant system of claim 1 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to balloon toward the left atrium, which allows a coaptation zone of the coaptation implant to more closely mimic a native leaflet.

10. A coaptation implant system comprising:

a coaptation implant comprising:

a coaptation surface configured for an anterior leaflet of a valve to coapt against;

a superior edge, lateral edges, and an inferior edge, wherein a distance between the lateral edges generally decreases toward the inferior edge;

a hub; and

at least one strut extending from the hub; and

a helical anchor configured to be rotated relative to the hub,

wherein the coaptation implant is configured to experience some motion and deformation as surrounding cardiac structures move in relation to one another during the cardiac cycle.

11. The coaptation implant system of claim 10 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured such that coaptation of the anterior leaflet against the coaptation implant seals off communication between the atrium and ventricle.

12. The coaptation implant system of claim 10 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to permit relatively normal circulation of blood in the ventricular chamber.

13. The coaptation implant system of claim 10 , wherein the coaptation implant is elongate and narrow between anterior and posterior surfaces.

14. The coaptation implant system of claim 10 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to functionally replace the posterior leaflet.

15. The coaptation implant system of claim 10 , wherein the coaptation implant is configured to traverse the valve.

16. A coaptation implant system comprising:

a coaptation implant comprising:

a coaptation surface configured for an anterior leaflet of a valve to coapt against;

a superior edge, lateral edges, and an inferior edge, wherein a distance between the lateral edges generally decreases toward the inferior edge;

a hub; and

at least two struts; and

a helical anchor configured to be rotated relative to the hub to engage tissue,

wherein a superior portion of the coaptation implant through a coaptation zone is configured to closely replicate the motion of a native leaflet during systole.

17. The coaptation implant system of claim 16 , wherein the at least two struts are configured to provide support during ballooning or stretching of the coaptation implant toward the left atrium during systole.

18. The coaptation implant system of claim 16 , wherein the at least two struts are configured to allow rotation toward the left atrium.

19. The coaptation implant system of claim 16 , wherein the at least two struts are configured to move slightly away from each other laterally during systole.

20. The coaptation implant system of claim 16 , wherein the at least two struts are configured to move slightly towards each other during diastole.
