Abstract

Providing storage services and managing a pool of storage resources, including: receiving, from a plurality of storage consumers, one or more requests for storage services, the one or more requests for storage services including one or more specifications of required storage features; provisioning, for each storage consumer, a first set of storage resources from the pool of storage resources to be used for providing the storage services; providing storage services to each of the plurality of storage consumers using provisioned resources from the pool of storage resources; determining that a configuration change is needed to continue to provide the storage services to a particular storage consumer in accordance with the required storage features associated with the particular storage consumer; and provisioning a second set of storage resources from the pool of storage resources to be used for providing the storage services the particular storage consumer.

Claims (36)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, from a plurality of storage consumers, one or more requests for storage services, the one or more requests for storage services including one or more specifications of required storage features;

provisioning, for each storage consumer, a first set of storage resources from a pool of storage resources comprising at least one local storage resource and at least one remote storage resource to be used for providing the storage services;

providing storage services to each of the plurality of storage consumers using provisioned resources from the pool of storage resources;

determining, based on available resources in the pool of storage resources and consumer resource utilization, that a configuration change is needed to continue to provide the storage services to a particular storage consumer in accordance with the required storage features associated with the particular storage consumer; and

provisioning a second set of storage resources from the pool of storage resources to be used for providing the storage services to the particular storage consumer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more specifications of required storage features includes one or more performance specifications and the first set of storage resources that are provisioned from the pool of storage resources are selected based on the one or more performance specifications.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that a configuration change is needed further comprises determining that one or more of the storage resources from the pool of storage resources has reached a utilization threshold.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more specifications of required storage feature includes a replication policy to be implemented for datasets associated with the particular storage consumer.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more specifications of required storage feature includes one or more compliance policies to be implemented for datasets associated with the particular storage consumer.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more specifications of required storage feature includes a data backup policy to be implemented for datasets associated with the particular storage consumer.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein provisioning the second set of storage resources from the pool of storage resources to be used for providing the storage services the particular storage consumer further comprises migrating data associated with the particular storage consumer from the first set of storage resources to the second set of storage resources.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that a configuration change is needed further comprises detecting that new resources have been added to the pool of storage resources.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein determining that a configuration change is needed further comprises detecting that resources within the pool of storage resources need to be removed.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pool of storage resources includes two or more storage systems.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the two or more storage systems are different storage system models.

12. An apparatus comprising:

a computer memory and a processing device communicatively coupled to the computer memory, the processing device configured to:

receive, from a plurality of storage consumers, one or more requests for storage services, the one or more requests for storage services including one or more specifications of required storage features;

provision, for each storage consumer, a first set of storage resources from a pool of storage resources comprising at least one local storage resource and at least one remote storage resource to be used for providing the storage services;

provide storage services to each of the plurality of storage consumers using provisioned resources from the pool of storage resources;

determine, based on available resources in the pool of storage resources and consumer resource utilization, that a configuration change is needed to continue to provide the storage services to a particular storage consumer in accordance with the required storage features associated with the particular storage consumer; and

provision a second set of storage resources from the pool of storage resources to be used for providing the storage services the particular storage consumer.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the one or more specifications of required storage features includes one or more performance specifications and the first set of storage resources that are provisioned from the pool of storage resources are selected based on the one or more performance specifications.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein to determine that a configuration change is needed the processing device is further configured to determine that one or more of the storage resources from the pool of storage resources has reached a utilization threshold.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the one or more specifications of required storage feature includes a replication policy to be implemented for datasets associated with the particular storage consumer.

16. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions which, when executed, cause a processing device to:

receive, from a plurality of storage consumers, one or more requests for storage services, the one or more requests for storage services including one or more specifications of required storage features;

provision, for each storage consumer, a first set of storage resources from a pool of storage resources comprising at least one local storage resource and at least one remote storage resource to be used for providing the storage services;

provide storage services to each of the plurality of storage consumers using provisioned resources from the pool of storage resources;

determine, based on available resources in the pool of storage resources and consumer resource utilization, that a configuration change is needed to continue to provide the storage services to a particular storage consumer in accordance with the required storage features associated with the particular storage consumer; and

provision a second set of storage resources from the pool of storage resources to be used for providing the storage services the particular storage consumer.

17. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the one or more specifications of required storage features includes one or more performance specifications and the first set of storage resources that are provisioned from the pool of storage resources are selected based on the one or more performance specifications.

18. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein to provision the second set of storage resources from the pool of storage resources to be used for providing the storage services the particular storage consumer the processing device is further configured to migrate data associated with the particular storage consumer from the first set of storage resources to the second set of storage resources.

19. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein to determine that a configuration change is needed the processing device is further configured to determine that one or more of the storage resources from the pool of storage resources has reached a utilization threshold.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein determining that a configuration change is needed further comprises detecting that new resources have been added to the pool of storage resources.
