Abstract

An automated vehicle assistance system is provided for supervised or unsupervised vehicle movement. The system includes a control system and a first sensor system. The first sensor system may receive first image data of a scene and may output a first disparity map and a first confidence map based on the first image data. The control system may output a video stream based on the first disparity map and the first confidence map. The vehicle assistance system also may include a second sensor system that receives second image data of at least a portion of the scene that outputs a second confidence map based on second image data. The video stream may include super-frames, with each super-frame including a 2D image of the scene, a depth map corresponding to the 2D image, and a certainty map corresponding to the depth map.

generating a first distance map comprising the first distance values, and generating a first confidence map comprising the first confidence values;

generating a second distance map comprising second distance values obtained from the second image data;

fusing the first distance map with the second distance map, using the first confidence map, to obtain a fused distance map; and

outputting a first control signal to an electronic control unit (ECU) of the vehicle to control the vehicle based on the fused distance map.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the fusing of the first distance map with the second distance map to obtain the fused distance map comprises:

determining whether a low-confidence portion is included in the first confidence map, the low-confidence portion including at least one confidence value below a predetermined threshold, and

if the first confidence map is determined to include the low-confidence portion, generating the fused distance map by replacing a portion of the first distance map corresponding to the low-confidence portion with a replacement portion obtained from the second distance map.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first control signal is output to the vehicle control system in real time or nearly real time to when the scene is captured by the pair of camera sensors and the auxiliary sensor.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the auxiliary sensor comprises any one or any combination of:

a radar sensor,

a lidar sensor,

an auxiliary camera sensor, and

an acoustic sensor.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the calculating includes determining a confidence value for each pixel of the first image data.
