Abstract

Composites of silicon and various porous scaffold materials, such as carbon material comprising micro-, meso- and/or macropores, and methods for manufacturing the same are provided. The compositions find utility in various applications, including electrical energy storage electrodes and devices comprising the same.

Claims (24)

1. A composite particle, comprising:

(i) a porous carbon framework comprising micropores and mesopores, the porous carbon framework further comprising a total pore volume of greater than 0.5 cm 3 /g; a volume fraction of macropores in the range from 0-10%; and a fractional pore volume of pores at or below 10 nm that comprises at least 75% of the total pore volume;

(ii) a first electrochemical modifier consisting of silicon and comprising 10 to 80% of the composite particle by weight; and

(iii) a second electrochemical modifier,

and wherein a plurality of the composite particles further comprises a Dv0 ranging from 1 nm to 5 um; a Dv50 ranging from 5 nm to 20 um; and a Dv100 ranging from 8 nm to 100 um.

2. The composite particle of claim 1 , wherein the silicon is located embedded within pores of the composite particle, covers at least a portion of a surface of the composite particle, or a combination thereof.

3. The composite particle of claim 1 , wherein the second electrochemical modifier comprises lithium.

4. The composite particle of claim 3 , comprising 1-20% of the lithium by weight.

5. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein the lithium is embedded within the pores of the composite particle, covers a portion of a surface of the composite particle, or a combination thereof.

6. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein a plurality of composite particles exhibits a particle skeletal density ranging from 1.5 to 2.2 g/cm 3 , as measured by helium pycnometry, and a nitrogen-inaccessible volume ranging from 0.05 to 0.5 cm 3 /g.

7. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein the total pore volume is greater than 0.6 cm 3 /g.

8. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein at least 75% of the total pore volume of the porous carbon framework comprises pores at or below 1 nm.

9. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein the weight percent of the silicon ranges from 20% to 70%.

10. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein the weight percent of the silicon ranges from 30% to 60%.

11. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein a plurality of the composite particles comprise a size span of 5 or less, where size span is (D90-D10)/D50.

12. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein silicon embedded within the pores of the porous carbon framework fills 10-90% of the total pore volume.

13. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein silicon embedded within the pores of the porous carbon framework fills 20-80% of the total pore volume.

14. The composite particle of claim 3 , wherein silicon embedded within the pores of the porous carbon framework fills 30-70% of the total pore volume.

15. The composite particle of claim 3 , further comprising a surface area below 50 m 2 /g.

16. An electrode, comprising the composite particle of claim 3 .

17. An energy storage device, comprising an electrode of claim 16 , wherein the electrode is an anode.

18. The energy storage device of claim 17 , wherein the device is a lithium ion battery.

19. The composite particle of claim 1 , wherein the second electrochemical modifier is a lithium salt.

20. The composite particle of claim 19 , wherein the lithium salt comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of dilithium tetrabromonickelate(II), dilithium tetrachlorocuprate(II), lithium azide, lithium benzoate, lithium bromide, lithium carbonate, lithium chloride, lithium cyclohexanebutyrate, lithium fluoride, lithium formate, lithium hexafluoroarsenate(V), lithium hexafluorophosphate, lithium hydroxide, lithium iodate, lithium iodide, lithium metaborate, lithium perchlorate, lithium phosphate, lithium sulfate, lithium tetraborate, lithium tetrachloroaluminate, lithium tetrafluoroborate, lithium thiocyanate, lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate, and lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate.
