Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for authentication and/or provisioning of wireless network devices, and in particular, methods and apparatuses for authentication and/or provisioning of wireless network devices that are communicating with and may be monitored and/or controlled by a remote (e.g., cloud) server.

Claims (31)

1. A method of provisioning a network device for use with a network using a handheld device, the method comprising:

establishing a connection between the handheld device and a cloud service;

communicating data wirelessly between the handheld device and the network device, wherein the data includes a first authentication key generated by the handheld device, and wherein the first authentication key is received by the network device;

receiving, by the network device, a second authentication key from the cloud service in response to the data communicated between the handheld device and the network device, wherein the second authentication key is generated by and provided to the cloud service by the handheld device; and

provisioning, by the network device, itself in response to:

the data communicated by the handheld device; and

the network device matching the second authentication key from the cloud service to the first authentication key from the handheld device prior to provisioning itself.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the handheld device and the network device communicate by way of a Bluetooth connection.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cloud service communicates an authentication key to the network device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a user selecting a device site for the network device by way of an interface of the handheld device.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the device site is communicated to the cloud service by either the handheld device or the network device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein provisioning itself comprises providing, by the cloud service, network information to the network device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the connection between the handheld device and the cloud service comprises at least one of a 4G, 3G, GSM, and EVDO network.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein provisioning itself comprises configuring the network device for use with the network.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising scanning, by the handheld device, for nearby network devices, wherein communication between the handheld device and the network device is in response to the scan.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein provisioning itself comprises receiving, by the network device, network information regarding the network.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the handheld device transmits the authentication key to the cloud service after generating the authentication key.

12. A cloud-based management system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory configured to store instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the cloud-based management system to:

establish a connection between a handheld device and a cloud service;

communicate data wirelessly between the handheld device and a network device, wherein the data includes a first authentication key generated by the handheld device, and wherein the first authentication key is received by the network device;

receive, by the network device, a second authentication key from the cloud service responsive to the data communicated between the handheld device and the network device, wherein the second authentication key is generated by and provided to the cloud service by the handheld device; and

responsively provision the network device based on: the data communicated by the handheld device, and the network device configured to match the second authentication key from the cloud service to the first authentication key from the handheld device prior to the responsive provision.

13. The cloud-based management system of claim 12 , wherein the handheld device and the network device are configured to communicate by way of a Bluetooth connection.

14. The cloud-based management system of claim 12 , wherein the cloud service is configured to communicate an authentication key to the network device.

15. The cloud-based management system of claim 12 , wherein execution of the instructions causes the cloud-based management system to select a device site for the network device by way of an interface of the handheld device.

16. The cloud-based management system of claim 15 wherein the device site is communicated to the cloud service by either the handheld device or the network device.

17. The cloud-based management system of claim 12 , wherein instructions to responsively provision the network device comprises instructions to provide, by the cloud service, network information to the network device.

18. The cloud-based management system of claim 12 , wherein execution of the instructions causes the cloud-based management system to further:

scan, by the handheld device, for nearby network devices, wherein communication between the handheld device and the network device is in response to the scan.
