Abstract

An automated tracking system for a pharmacy that tracks unique identifiers (“UI”) with a stock supply of an item or items within a supply container and that provides a security system for determining a discrepancy associated with the stock supply. The UI information automatically travels with the stock supply until it is dispensed to a customer or patient, thereby allowing the system to monitor and track supply for replenishment of the supply or improper or potentially fraudulent transactions. If desired, the improved security allows supply containers and individual supplies within those containers to be stored in the same storage area thereby maximizing available storage space while still improving dispensing and filling accuracy and minimizing loss.

Claims (74)

1. A system, comprising:

one or more computing devices;

a tag reader device in communication with the one or more computing devices and configured to wirelessly detect a presence of respective machine readable tags; and

a machine-readable storage medium having instructions thereon that, when executed, cause the one or more computing devices to:

detect, via the tag reader device, that a first machine readable tag affixed to a medication container is within a proximate location of a second machine readable tag associated with a stock supply container when at least a portion of a medication supply is transferred between the stock supply container and the medication container;

receive a first identifier associated with the medication container and a second identifier associated with the stock supply container in connection with transferring the at least the portion of the medication supply;

automatically, based on the detecting and the wirelessly receiving, generate an association in a database between the first identifier and the second identifier for the portion of the medication supply transferred between the stock supply container and the medication container.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more computing devices are further caused to:

detect a predetermined discrepancy associated with transferring the portion of the medication supply between the stock supply container and the medication container; and

provide an alert pertaining to the discrepancy.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the discrepancy is an amount or rate of the medication being dispensing being more than a predetermined amount, wherein the one or more computing devices are further caused to:

identify a user associated with transferring the portion of the medication supply; and

prevent the user from gaining further access to a supply of the medication until the discrepancy is cleared by another user having a higher authorization level than the user.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more computing devices are further caused to:

detect a returned medication container proximate the tag reader;

receive an indication that the medication container is being returned to a stock supply;

confirm a match between the first and second identifiers; and

identify the portion of the medication supply as being placed back into the stock supply.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more computing devices are further caused to:

receive a prescription order identifier in connection with the transfer of the portion of the medication supply between the stock supply container and the medication container; and

automatically associate the prescription order identifier with the first identifier.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the medication container is associated with the prescription order, wherein the one or more computing devices are further caused to:

determine that the medication container was not dispensed to a patient within a predetermined period of time after transferring the portion of the medication supply; and

activate a transducer associated with the first machine readable tag affixed to a first medication container or preventing the dispense of the medication container.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the medication container is associated with the prescription order, wherein the one or more computing devices are further caused to:

receive an indication that the at least the portion of the medication supply is transferred from the stock supply container to the medication container; and

generate the association based on associating a prescription order with the medication container and the at least the portion of the medication supply transferred to the medication container.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more computing devices are further caused to:

update the first machine readable tag affixed to a first medication container with an expiration date for the portion of the medication supply.

9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a medication dispensing cabinet;

wherein the one or more computing devices are further caused to:

compare the first machine readable tag affixed to a first medication container with available supply containers in the medication dispensing cabinet;

determine a supply container that contains a supply of the medication supply; and

activate a transducer on a drawer containing the other supply container to indicate to a user the location of the supply container.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an user authentication device comprising a machine readable tag a biometric scanner,

wherein the one or more computing devices are further caused to:

receive, in connection with the transferring, a user identifier from the authentication device; and

generate an association in the database between the transferring and a user associated with the user identifier.

11. A machine-implemented method, comprising:

detecting, via a tag reader device, that a first machine readable tag affixed to a medication container is within a proximate location of a second machine readable tag associated with a stock supply container when at least a portion of a medication supply is transferred between the stock supply container and the medication container;

wirelessly receiving a first identifier associated with the medication container and a second identifier associated with the stock supply container in connection with transferring the at least the portion of the medication supply;

automatically, based on the detecting and the wirelessly receiving, generating an association in a database between the first identifier and the second identifier for the portion of the medication supply transferred between the stock supply container and the medication container.

12. The machine-implemented method of claim 11 , further comprising:

detecting a predetermined discrepancy associated with transferring the portion of the medication supply between the stock supply container and the medication container; and

providing an alert pertaining to the discrepancy.

13. The machine-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the discrepancy is an amount or rate of the medication being dispensing being more than a predetermined amount, the machine-implemented method further comprising:

identifying a user associated with transferring the portion of the medication supply; and

preventing the user from gaining further access to a supply of the medication until the discrepancy is cleared by another user having a higher authorization level than the user.

14. The machine-implemented method of claim 11 , further comprising:

detecting a returned medication container proximate the tag reader;

receiving an indication that the medication container is being returned to a stock supply;

confirming a match between the first and second identifiers; and

identifying the portion of the medication supply as being placed back into the stock supply.

15. The machine-implemented method of claim 11 , further comprising:

receiving a prescription order identifier in connection with the transfer of the portion of the medication supply between the stock supply container and the medication container; and

automatically associating the prescription order identifier with the first identifier.

16. The machine-implemented method of claim 15 , wherein the medication container is associated with the prescription order, the machine-implemented method further comprising:

determining that the medication container was not dispensed to a patient within a predetermined period of time after transferring the portion of the medication supply; and

activating a transducer associated with the first machine readable tag affixed to a first medication container or preventing the dispense of the medication container.

17. The machine-implemented method of claim 15 , wherein the medication container is associated with the prescription order, the machine-implemented method further comprising:

receiving an indication that the at least the portion of the medication supply is transferred from the stock supply container to the medication container; and

generating the association based on associating a prescription order with the medication container and the at least the portion of the medication supply transferred to the medication container.

18. The machine-implemented method of claim 11 , further comprising:

updating the first machine readable tag affixed to a first medication container with an expiration date for the portion of the medication supply.

19. The machine-implemented method of claim 11 , further comprising:

comparing the first machine readable tag affixed to a first medication container with available supply containers in a medication dispensing cabinet;

determining a supply container that contains a supply of the medication supply; and

activating a transducer on a drawer containing the other supply container to indicate to a user the location of the supply container.

20. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform a method, comprising:

detecting, via a tag reader device, that a first machine readable tag affixed to a medication container is within a proximate location of a second machine readable tag associated with a stock supply container when at least a portion of a medication supply is transferred between the stock supply container and the medication container;

receiving a first identifier associated with the medication container and a second identifier associated with the stock supply container in connection with transferring the at least the portion of the medication supply;

automatically, based on the detecting and the receiving, generating an association in a database between the first identifier and the second identifier for the portion of the medication supply transferred between the stock supply container and the medication container.
