Abstract

A wire termination apparatus for terminating an electrical terminal to a wire or cable include an upper tooling member which is movable between an open position and a closed position. A lower tooling member is attached to a base member of a frame of the wire termination apparatus. A process analyzer determines if a crimped terminal is properly crimped to a wire or cable. If the process analyzer determines that the terminal has not been properly crimped to the wire cable, the removal of the defectively crimped terminal and wire or cable from the wire termination apparatus is prevented until a code or key is entered.

Claims (24)

1. A wire termination apparatus for terminating an electrical terminal to a wire or cable, the wire termination apparatus comprising:

an upper tooling member attached to a ram, the upper tooling member having a crimp die, the upper tooling movable between an open position and a closed position;

a lower tooling member attached to a base member of a frame of the wire termination apparatus;

a cable clamping device having two opposing clamp arms that lock around a wire or cable prior to crimping the terminal onto the wire or cable;

a process analyzer which determines if a crimped terminal is properly crimped to a wire or cable;

wherein if process analyzer determines that the terminal has not been properly crimped to the wire or cable, the termination apparatus prevents a guard of the termination apparatus from being opened, preventing the operator from releasing the clamp arms of the clamping device, thus preventing the defectively crimped terminal and wire or cable from being removed from the termination apparatus.

2. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein a cable clamping device is mounted to the apparatus, the clamping device is movable axially relative to the wire or cable being crimped to allow for extrusion of the wire or cable and terminal during the crimping process.

3. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the clamping device is positioned proximate the lower tooling member, the clamping device has a first clamp arm and a second clamp arm which define a channel for receiving the cable.

4. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 3 , wherein a base plate extends between the first clamp arm and the second clamp arm.

5. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 4 , wherein a spring is attached to the base plate.

6. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 5 , wherein an air cylinder is attached to the base plate.

7. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 6 , wherein the clamping device is mounted on a slide track.

8. A wire termination apparatus for terminating an electrical terminal to a wire or cable, the wire termination apparatus comprising:

an upper tooling member attached to a ram, the upper tooling member having a crimp die, the upper tooling movable between an open position and a closed position;

a lower tooling member attached to a base member of a frame of the wire termination apparatus;

a cable clamping device having two opposing clamp arms that apply a light force to a wire or cable to help hold the wire or cable prior to crimping the terminal onto the wire or cable

a process analyzer capable of determining if a crimped terminal is properly crimped to a wire or cable

wherein if process analyzer determines that the terminal has not been properly crimped to the cable, the cable clamping device applies additional force to the clamp arms to prevent the defectively crimped terminal and wire or cable from being removed from the termination apparatus.

9. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 8 , wherein a cable clamping device is mounted to the apparatus, the clamping device is movable axially relative to the wire or cable being crimped to allow for extrusion of the wire or cable and terminal during the crimping process.

10. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 8 , wherein the clamping device is positioned proximate the lower tooling member, the clamping device has a first clamp arm and a second clamp arm which define a channel for receiving the cable.

11. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 10 , wherein a base plate extends between the first clamp arm and the second clamp arm.

12. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 11 , wherein a spring is attached to the base plate.

13. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 11 , wherein an air cylinder is attached to the base plate.

14. The wire termination apparatus as recited in claim 8 , wherein the clamping device is mounted on a slide track.
