Abstract

In one aspect, a method for planning a wireless data communications (WDC) network includes obtaining information describing an arrangement of a plurality of walls of a physical space in which the WDC network is to be deployed, obtaining a plurality of measured signal strengths of one or more access points taken in the physical space, determining an attenuation of each of the plurality of walls based on the plurality of measured signal strengths wherein the attenuation of each of the plurality of walls are simultaneously determined based on the plurality of measured signal strengths, and generating for input to a display, at least one indication of the attenuation of each of the plurality of walls with the arrangement of the plurality of walls.

Claims (35)

1 . A method for planning a wireless data communications (WDC) network, comprising:

obtaining, by a device, a position and a length of each of a plurality of walls of a physical space in which the WDC network is to be deployed, the device including one or more processors and one or more radios including one or more antennas;

obtaining a plurality of measured signal strengths of one or more access points taken in the physical space, the plurality of measured signal strengths determined from signals sensed by the device using the one or more radios including the one or more antennas in the physical space;

determining, by the one or more processors of the device, a set of attenuation values for the plurality of walls, one for each wall, based on the plurality of measured signal strengths, wherein the set of attenuation values includes, for each wall, a specific attenuation for each of a plurality of different frequencies; and

generating for input to a display, by the one or more processors of the device, an indication of the set of attenuation values with the position of each of the plurality of walls.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of attenuation values for the plurality of walls are determined to fit predicted signal strengths to the plurality of measured signal strengths with minimal error between the predicted signal strengths and the plurality of measured signal strengths.

The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the set of attenuation values for the plurality of walls includes determining a transmit power of the one or more access points in the physical space based on the plurality of measured signal strengths, and determining the predicted signal strengths based on the transmit power and a free-space distance model.

The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the set of attenuation values for the plurality of walls includes simultaneously determining the set of attenuation values and a transmit power of each of the one or more access points, to fit the predicted signal strengths to the plurality of measured signal strengths with the minimal error between the predicted signal strengths and the plurality of measured signal strengths.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein to fit the predicted signal strengths to the plurality of measured signal strengths includes performing a linear regression algorithm.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the linear regression algorithm includes a least squares regression algorithm.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of measured signal strengths includes at least one measurement taken between a measurement tool and each of the one or more access points in the physical space without blockage from the plurality of walls.

The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of measured signal strengths includes, for each respective one of the plurality of walls, at least one second measurement between the measurement tool and at least one of the one or more access points, with the blockage from the respective one of the plurality of walls.

The method of claim 8 , further comprising determining a confidence of the set of attenuation values for the plurality of walls based on receiving: the at least one measurement taken between the measurement tool and each of the one or more access points without the blockage from the plurality of walls, and receiving: for each respective one of the plurality of walls, the at least one second measurement between the measurement tool and at least one of the one or more access points, with the blockage from the respective one of the plurality of walls.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of measured signal strengths includes multiple frequency bands.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more access points includes every access point that is present in the physical space.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of attenuation values is determined simultaneously with a common optimization model.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication includes a map showing the physical space and each of the plurality of walls with their respective attenuation values.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the specific attenuation for each of the plurality of different frequencies includes one attenuation value for each of the 2.4 GHz, the 5 GHZ, and the 6 GHz frequency bands.

15 . A computing device for planning a wireless data communications (WDC) network, comprising:

one or more processors;

one or more radios including one or more antennas; and

a memory coupled to the one or more processors storing instructions, which when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

obtain a position and a length of each of a plurality of walls of a physical space in which the WDC network is to be deployed;

obtain a plurality of measured signal strengths of one or more access points taken in the physical space, wherein the plurality of measured signal strengths is determined from signals sensed using the one or more radios including the one or more antennas in the physical space;

determine, by the one or more processors of the device, a set of attenuation values for the plurality of walls, one for each wall, based on the plurality of measured signal strengths, wherein the set of attenuation values includes, for each wall, a specific attenuation for each of a plurality of different frequencies; and

generate for input to a display, by the one or more processors of the device, an indication of the set of attenuation values with the position of each of the plurality of walls.

The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the set of attenuation values for the plurality of walls are determined to fit predicted signal strengths to the plurality of measured signal strengths with minimal error between the predicted signal strengths and the plurality of measured signal strengths.

17 . The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of measured signal strengths includes at least one measurement taken between a measurement tool and each of the one or more access points in the physical space without blockage from the plurality of walls.

The computing device of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of measured signal strengths includes, for each respective one of the plurality of walls, at least one second measurement between the measurement tool and at least one of the one or more access points, with the blockage from the respective one of the plurality of walls.

The computing device of claim 18 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to determine a confidence of the set of attenuation values for the plurality of walls based on receiving: the at least one measurement taken between the measurement tool and each of the one or more access points without the blockage from the plurality of walls, and receiving: for each respective one of the plurality of walls, the at least one second measurement between the measurement tool and at least one of the one or more access points, with the blockage from the respective one of the plurality of walls.

20 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, the computer-readable storage medium including instructions that when executed by a one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

obtain, by a device, a position and a length of each of a plurality of walls of a physical space in which a WDC network is to be deployed, the device including the one or more processors and one or more radios including the one or more antennas;

obtain a plurality of measured signal strengths of one or more access points taken in the physical space, the plurality of measured signal strengths determined from signals sensed by the device using the one or more radios including the one or more antennas in the physical space;

determine, by the one or more processors of the device, a set of attenuation values for the plurality of walls, one for each wall, based on the plurality of measured signal strengths, wherein the set of attenuation values includes, for each wall, a specific attenuation for each of a plurality of different frequencies; and

generate for input to a display, by the one or more processors of the device, an indication the set of attenuation values with the position of each of the plurality of walls.
