Platelet activation and growth factor release using electric pulses
Methods and systems for releasing growth factors are disclosed. In certain embodiments, a blood sample is exposed to a sequence of one or more electric pulses to trigger release of a growth factor in the sample. In certain embodiments, the growth factor release is not accompanied by clotting within the blood sample.
1. A method for releasing one or more growth factors, comprising:
exposing a blood sample to a sequence of one or more electric pulses that trigger release of one or more growth factors in the blood sample, wherein the one or more electric pulses have an electric field strength between 0.1 kV/cm and 350 kV/cm and pulse durations between 1 nanosecond and 100 microsecond, whereby the growth factor release is accompanied by clotting within the blood sample; and
collecting the one or more growth factors.
2. The method of claim 1 , comprising exposing the blood sample to calcium chloride (CaCl 2 )) prior to exposing the blood sample to the sequence of the one or more electric pulses.
3. The method of claim 1 , comprising exposing the blood sample to calcium chloride (CaCl 2 )) and an adenosine diphosphate (ADP) blocking agent prior to exposing the blood sample to the sequence of the one or more electric pulses.
4. The method of claim 1 , comprising exposing the blood sample to the one or more electric pulses without adding calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ).
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more growth factors are collected to be used for wound healing at a site of an injury.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the blood sample comprises a whole blood sample or a platelet enriched plasma (PRP) sample.
7. The method of claim 1 , comprising processing the blood sample using a centrifuge or filtration.
8. The method of claim 1 , comprising exposing the blood sample to the sequence of the one or more electric pulses to induce adenosine diphosphate (ADP) release in the blood sample.
9. The method of claim 8 , comprising inducing clotting within the blood sample in response to the release of the ADP.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the collected growth factors are used to treat a patient.
11. A method for releasing one or more growth factors, comprising:
exposing a blood sample to bovine thrombin, an adenosine diphosphate (ADP) blocker, and calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) to trigger release of one or more growth factors in the blood sample, wherein the growth factor release is accompanied by clotting within the blood sample; and
collecting the one or more growth factors.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more growth factors are collected to be used for wound healing at a site of an injury.
13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the blood sample is not exposed to one or more electrical pulses to trigger release of the one or more growth factors.
14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the ADP blocker comprises apyrase, and wherein the apyrase is added to the blood sample prior to the growth factor release.
15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the collected one or more growth factors are used to treat a patient.
16. A method for inducing adenosine diphosphate (ADP) release, comprising:
exposing a blood sample to calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) and one or more electrical pulses to trigger release of one or more growth factors in the blood sample, wherein the one or more electric pulses have an electric field strength between 0.1 kV/cm and 350 kV/cm and pulse durations between 1 nanosecond and 100 microseconds, whereby the growth factor release is accompanied by ADP release and clotting within the blood sample; and
collecting the one or more growth factors.
17. The method of claim 16 , comprising retrieving the blood sample from a patient.
18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the blood sample is processed by centrifugation or filtration to generate a plasma rich plasma (PRP) sample.
19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the one or more growth factors are collected to be used for wound healing at a site of an injury.
20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the blood sample is exposed to the CaCl 2 prior to exposing the blood sample to the one or more electrical pulses.
