Abstract

A fixing device for fixing a toner image to the recording medium includes a film unit, a roller, and a frame. The film unit includes a tubular film that rotates while being in contact with the recording medium. The roller is in contact with an outer surface of the tubular film and form a fixing nip portion with the film unit to pinch and convey the recording medium. The frame includes a first side frame to hold one end portion of the film unit and includes a second side frame to hold the other end portion of the film unit. At least one of the first or second side frames includes a first plate and a second plate. The first plate is fixed to the second plate and is disposed on a side of a surface of the second plate orthogonal to a longitudinal direction of the fixing device.

Claims (23)

1. A fixing device for fixing a toner image formed on a recording medium to the recording medium, the fixing device comprising:

a film unit configured to rotate and to generate heat to fix the toner image to the recording medium;

a roller configured to rotate and to form a fixing nip portion with the film unit to pinch and convey the recording medium;

a shaft portion attached to the roller;

a pressure roller gear fitted to the shaft portion;

an idler gear disposed to mesh with the pressure roller gear as a driving force transmission unit; and

a first side frame including a first plate configured to hold one end portion of at least one of the film unit or the roller in a longitudinal direction of the fixing device,

wherein the first side frame further includes a second plate attached to the first plate in a way that forms a heat insulating structure that prevents heat from the fixing nip portion from transferring to the pressure roller gear and the idler gear.

2. The fixing device according to claim 1 , wherein the second plate is disposed between the first plate and the fixing nip portion on one side of the second plate and the driving force transmission unit on the other side of the second plate.

3. The fixing device according to claim 1 , wherein the first plate and the second plate each are formed of galvanized steel having an organic film surface layer and are such that heat energy transferred from the fixing nip portion outside of the first side frame through use of the first plate and the second plate as two galvanized steel plates is one-half that in a case where one galvanized steel plate is used as the first side frame.

4. The fixing device according to claim 3 , wherein the second plate is attached to the first plate by four discontinuous welds, each made by fiber laser, two welds of which are located at a position that corresponds to a position of the film unit and two welds of which are located at a position of the pressure roller, and each having a size that increases prevention heat transfer to the pressure roller gear and the idler gear by retaining the organic film surface layer.

5. The fixing device according to claim 1 , wherein the first plate and the second plate each have a surface roughness that reduce a contact area between the first plate and the second plate to generate an air gap that forms a thermal resistance sufficient to prevent heat from the fixing nip portion from transferring to the pressure roller gear and the idler gear.

6. The fixing device according to claim 1 , wherein the second plate (i) is attached to the first plate by discontinuous welds that form welded portions and (ii) is in contact with the first plate only at an area around each of the welded portions.

7. The fixing device according to claim 6 , wherein the first side frame further includes an offset portion that is in contact with the first plate in an area other than the area around each of the welded portions, and

wherein the offset portion has a shape that is offset from the first plate in a direction in which the driving force transmission unit is disposed to form an air gap between the first plate and the second plate that is configured as a heat insulating layer that suppresses heat transfer from the first plate to the second plate.

8. The fixing device according to claim 7 , wherein the air gap is non-convective.

9. The fixing device according to claim 7 , wherein the air gap has a thickness of at least 0.3 millimeters (mm).

10. The fixing device according to claim 7 , wherein the air gap has a thickness of 0.6 millimeters (mm).

11. The fixing device according to claim 7 , further comprising a spring,

wherein the first plate includes a film unit positioning portion that positions the film unit with respect to each of a recording medium conveyance direction and a longitudinal direction of the fixing device,

wherein the second plate includes a U-shaped fitting portion that positions the roller with respect to each of the recording medium conveyance direction, the longitudinal direction of the fixing device, and an urging direction of the spring for forming the fixing nip portion N, and

wherein the air gap has a thickness of 0.6 millimeters (mm).

12. The fixing device according to claim 1 , wherein the fixing device is a film heating type fixing device, the roller is a pressure roller, and the film unit includes a heater that is a ceramic substrate on which a heat generation resistor is printed.
