Abstract

A medical station includes a cassette system provided at a moveable cart. The cassette system includes locking drawers and sensors, each associated with one of the locking drawers. A computer system provided at the moveable cart includes an input device. The computer system receives data from the sensors to determine a position of each of the drawers and prevent a second one of the drawers from moving into an opened position when a first one of the drawers is in the opened position.

Claims (64)

1 . A medical station comprising:

a movable cart;

a computer system comprising an input device, a display device, and a processor, the computer system positioned on the cart and including computer memory in communication with the processor, said computer memory comprising patient identifiers stored in association with drawer identifiers;

a housing mounted on the cart;

at least one portable cassette system removably coupled to the housing, the cassette system comprising:

a cassette frame defining an interior divided into compartments;

drawers, each occupying, and being slidably positioned in, at least one of the compartments, said drawers including medication drawers and at least one storage drawer; and

sensors, each associated with one of the medication drawers;

each of the compartments having an actuator associated therewith in communication with the processor and associated with an actuator latch that is movable in response to operation of the associated actuator;

each of the drawers having at least one drawer latch, and each of the drawers capable of moving from a locked and closed position to an unlocked position in response to movement from the associated actuator latch;

wherein the computer system is configured to:

receive data from the input device identifying a particular patient;

receive data from said sensors to determine a position of each of the medication drawers;

query the computer memory with the data received from the input device to identify a specific one of the medication drawer identifiers associated with a specific one of the patient identifiers corresponding to the data received from the input device; and

exert operative control over the actuators to permit access exclusively to a specific one of the medication drawers associated with the specific one of the drawer identifiers and prevent a second one of the medication drawers from movement into an opened position while the data from said sensors indicates that the specific one of the medication drawers is in the opened position, unless the computer system receives, from the input device, an authenticated, electronic command comprising one or more of: an override command, an administrator access command, or a pharmacy access command, and allow access to any of the at least one storage drawer upon user request regardless of the position of the medication drawers.

2 . The medical station of claim 1 wherein:

the computer system is configured to automatically transition a specific one of the drawers from the unlocked position to the locked and closed position where the specific one of the drawers remains in the unlocked position for at least a predetermined period of time.

3 . The medical station of claim 1 , wherein:

the computer system is configured to move the specific one of the drawers into the unlocked position by movement of the actuator associated with the specific one of the drawers.

4 . The medical station of claim 1 , wherein:

said sensors comprise proximity sensors.

5 . The medical station of claim 4 , wherein:

the computer system is configured to detect if each of the medication drawers is in a closed, not quite closed, or opened position on output of the proximity sensors.

6 . The medical station of claim 4 , wherein:

the proximity sensors comprise at least one of: a magnetic field sensor, a capacitance sensor, a photo sensor, an optical sensor, an actuatable switch, and an ultrasonic sensor.

7 . The medical station of claim 4 , further comprising:

electronically readable identifier tags, each associated with one of the medication drawers and comprising a unique drawer identifier, wherein said series of proximity sensors comprise electronic readers, each associated with one of the medication drawers and configured to read the identifier tags, wherein the computer system is configured to identify a position of each of the medication drawers in the cassette frame based on positions of the electronic readers relative to the unique identifiers for the medication drawers.

8 . The medical station of claim 7 , wherein:

each of the electronically readable identifier tags also indicate a number of the compartments occupied by an associated one of the medication drawers.

9 . The medical station of claim 7 , wherein:

the computer system is configured to classify a respective one of the medication drawers as in the opened position when the proximity sensor associated with the respective one of the medication drawers is not detected.

10 . The medical station of claim 9 , wherein:

the electronic readers are capable of reading the electronically readable identifier tag of a first one of the medication drawers which is in a closed position, but are not capable of reading the electronically readable identifier tag of an adjacent one of the medication drawers when the adjacent one of the medication drawers is in the closed position.

11 . The medical station of claim 1 , wherein:

the cassette system further comprises:

a spring-loaded graspable handle slidably mounted on the cassette frame for movement between a closed position where the handle is not accessible or graspable by a user and a released position; and

a handle actuator mounted to the housing for moving the handle between the closed position and the released position.

12 . The medical station of claim 1 , further comprising:

a configuration map located in the computer memory, the configuration map comprising, for each respective one of the drawers, a respective one of the drawer identifiers and an indicator of a location of the respective one of the drawers in an interior of the cassette frame.

13 . The medical station of claim 1 , wherein:

the cassette system includes a drawer manual override configured to allow a hardware key to mechanically unlatch all of the actuator latches so that the drawers are capable of opening.

14 . The medical station of claim 13 , wherein:

the housing includes a cassette manual override allowing the cassette system to be mechanically unlocked and removed from the housing; and

the cassette manual override includes a lockable cassette handle activated by a manual hardware key.

15 . A medical station comprising:

a movable cart;

a cassette system provided at said moveable cart and comprising a plurality of locking medication drawers, each comprising a drawer latch, and at least one storage drawer;

a series of sensors provided at the cassette system, each of the medication drawers being associated with one of the series of sensors; and

a computer system provided at the moveable cart and comprising or in electronic communication with an input device and one or more non-transitory electronic storage devices comprising patient identifiers stored in association with drawer identifiers, wherein said computer system is in electronic communication with said plurality of sensors, and wherein said computer system is configured to:

receive data from the sensors to determine a position of each of the medication drawers;

receive data from the input device identifying a particular patient;

query the one or more non-transitory electronic storage devices with the data received from the input device to identify a respective one of the drawer identifiers associated with a respective one of the patient identifiers corresponding to the data received from the input device;

operate said cassette system to unlock only a respective one of the medication drawers corresponding to the respective one of the drawer identifiers;

operatively control said drawer latches to only unlock the respective one of the medication drawers corresponding to the respective one of the drawer identifiers such that a remainder of the drawers remain locked while data from the sensors indicates that the respective one of the medication drawers is in the opened position, and allow access to any of the at least one storage drawer upon user regardless of the position of the medication drawers.

16 . The medical station of claim 15 wherein:

the input device comprises at least one of: a touch sensitive electronic display provided at the moveable cart, a keyboard, and an optical scanning device.

17 . A medical station comprising:

a movable cart;

a cassette system provided at said moveable cart and comprising medication drawers and one or more storage drawers, each of the drawers being lockable and comprising a drawer latch; and

a computer system provided at the moveable cart and comprising or in electronic communication with an input device and one or more non-transitory electronic storage devices comprising patient identifiers stored in association with drawer identifiers for the medication drawers, wherein said computer system is configured to:

receive data from the input device identifying a particular patient;

query the one or more non-transitory electronic storage devices with the data received from the input device to identify a respective one of the drawer identifiers associated with a respective one of the patient identifiers corresponding to the data received from the input device;

operate said cassette system to unlock only a respective one of the medication drawers corresponding to the respective one of the drawer identifiers; and

operatively control said drawer latches to only unlock the respective one of the medication drawers corresponding to the respective one of the drawer identifiers such that a remainder of the medication drawers normally remain locked, and allow access to any of the one or more storage drawers upon user request regardless of the position of the medication drawers.
