Abstract

A storage system comprising: a cartridge, said cartridge including an upright having mounted to one side a plurality of guide blocks; a plurality of first drawer information means for providing information on at least one of position and movement of respective drawers; and a plurality of latch mechanisms, said system further comprising a plurality of drawers, each said drawer including: guide block engaging means extending in a depth direction of the drawer and mounting a first side of the drawer adjacent a respective guide block; second drawer information means disposed adjacent the first drawer information means; and at least one stop on the first side of the drawer for engaging with a said latch mechanism, wherein the latch mechanisms are electronically controllable, whereby access to the drawers can be controlled.

Claims (38)

1. A storage system comprising:

an upright having mounted on one side

a plurality of guide blocks; and

a plurality of first drawer information means;

said system further comprising a plurality of drawers, each said drawer being mounted on a first side to a corresponding guide block and including

guide block engaging means extending in a depth direction of the drawer for mounting the first side of the drawer adjacent the corresponding guide block; and

second drawer information means disposed adjacent a corresponding first drawer information means, said first and second information means for providing information on at least one of position or movement of said drawer;

wherein a ratio of a depth of each guide block to a depth of the corresponding drawer is in the range of 0.1 to 0.5.

2. A storage system according to claim 1 , further comprising a lockable cover plate for preventing access to an over-ride system.

3. A storage system according to claim 1 , wherein a width of a first drawer is different from a width of a second drawer.

4. A storage system according to claim 1 , wherein a first drawer has a different height to a second drawer.

5. A storage system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a plurality of latch mechanisms mounted to the one side of the upright,

wherein each drawer has at least one stop on the first side of the drawer for engaging with a corresponding latch mechanism, and the latch mechanisms are electronically controllable for regulating access to the drawers.

6. A storage system according to claim 5 , adapted to control opening and closing of the latch mechanisms based on information from the respective drawer information means.

7. A storage system according to claim 5 , further comprising an over-ride system, by means of which each latch mechanism can be manually opened together.

8. A storage system according to claim 7 , wherein the over-ride system comprises:

a finger bar; and

an over-ride bar pivotally connected to the finger bar, whereby movement of the finger bar moves the over-ride bar to open each latch mechanism.

9. A storage system according to claim 1 , wherein each drawer comprises:

at least one compartment open at the top of the drawer; and

upper rail-engaging means for engaging an upper rail of the corresponding guide block and lower rail-engaging means for engaging a lower rail of the corresponding guide block, said upper and lower rail engaging means extending in the depth direction of the drawer for mounting the first side of the drawer adjacent the corresponding guide block,

wherein the at least one of the plurality of first drawer information means is disposed between the upper and lower rail-engaging means.

10. A storage system according to claim 9 , wherein corresponding upper and lower rail-engaging means for mounting an opposite, second side of the drawer are absent.

11. A storage system according to claim 9 , wherein at least one of the plurality of first drawer information means is disposed adjacent the upper rail-engaging means.

12. A storage system according to claim 9 , wherein:

the upper rail-engaging means is provided on the first side of the drawer; and

the lower rail-engaging means is formed at a corner of the drawer between the first side and the bottom of the drawer.

13. A storage system according to claim 12 , wherein:

the upper rail-engaging means comprises a first portion extending away from the first side and a second portion extending orthogonally to the first portion; and

the lower rail-engaging means comprises a groove formed in the bottom of the drawer.

14. A storage system according to claim 9 , further comprising a drawer release lever disposed at the back of a drawer, the release lever being biased for latching the drawer to the corresponding guide block.

15. A storage system according to claim 9 , further comprising a lifting portion adapted to engage with lifting means to lift a back portion of a drawer.

16. A storage system according to claim 9 , further comprising:

a first guide notch or a first guide protrusion extending longitudinally along the top of a drawer and disposed towards a second side opposite the first side; and

a second guide protrusion or a second guide notch extending longitudinally along bottom of the drawer under the first guide notch or the first guide protrusion,

whereby the second guide protrusion or the second guide notch of an upper drawer is adapted to engage with the first guide notch or first guide protrusion of a lower drawer.

17. A storage system according to claim 16 , wherein a drawer has a plurality of compartments separated by respective compartment walls, the guide notch or guide protrusion extending longitudinally along the top of the drawer being formed in or on the top of compartment walls.
