Abstract

A system for hydrogen generation includes at least one cabinet defining a first volume, a second volume, and a third volume, where the first volume, the second volume and the third volume are fluidically isolated from each other, a water circuit located in the first volume, an electrochemical module including an electrolyzer electrochemical stack located in the second volume, a hydrogen circuit located in the third volume, at least one first fluid connector fluidly connecting the water circuit and the electrolyzer electrochemical stack, and at least one second fluid connector fluidly connecting the electrolyzer electrochemical stack and the hydrogen circuit.

Claims (37)

1 . An electrochemical module for hydrogen processing, comprising:

a liquid-management section that facilitates transfer of water between the electrochemical module and a water circuit, the liquid-management section comprising a plurality of first fluid connectors and at least one manifold; and

a gas-management section that facilitates transfer of gas between the electrochemical module and a hydrogen circuit, the gas-management section comprising an electrochemical stack and a second fluid connector located above the liquid-management section and in fluid connection with the liquid-management section,

wherein:

the water circuit is located in a first volume, the electrochemical module is located in a second volume, and the hydrogen circuit is located in a third volume, and the first volume, the second volume, and the third volume are fluidically isolated from each other;

the electrochemical stack comprises at least one bipolar plate and a plurality of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), wherein each of the plurality of MEAs comprises an anode, a cathode, and a proton exchange membrane;

the at least one bipolar plate is in sealed engagement with one of the plurality of MEAs to define an anode channel therebetween; and

the at least one bipolar plate is in sealed engagement with another one of the plurality of MEAs to define a cathode channel therebetween.

2 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of first fluid connectors is in fluid communication with the anode channel via the at least one manifold.

3 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , wherein the second fluid connector is in fluid communication with the cathode channel.

4 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of first fluid connectors and the at least one manifold are releasably securable to and in fluid communication with the anode channel.

5 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , wherein the liquid-management section and the gas-management section are detachable from one another along an interface between the at least one manifold and the electrochemical stack.

6 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , wherein the electrochemical stack is a proton exchange membrane (PEM) based electrolyzer stack.

7 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , the at least one manifold comprising an inlet manifold and an outlet manifold.

8 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , the at least one manifold comprising at least one liquid connection securable to the gas-management section.

9 . The electrochemical module of claim 8 , further comprising a separator plate.

10 . The electrochemical module of claim 9 , wherein the at least one liquid connection extends through the separator plate.

11 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , the gas-management section further comprising a collector plate.

12 . The electrochemical module of claim 11 , wherein the collector plate is oriented perpendicular to the direction of the second fluid connector.

13 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , the electrochemical stack further comprising a first end plate and a second end plate.

14 . The electrochemical module of claim 13 , wherein the at least one bipolar plate is disposed between the first end plate and the second end plate.

15 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , the plurality of MEAs comprising a first MEA and a second MEA.

16 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , the proton exchange membrane comprising a sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene based fluoropolymer-copolymer having a formula C 7 HF 13 O 5 S·C 2 F 4 .

17 . The electrochemical module of claim 1 , the at least one bipolar plate comprising a substrate, an anode gasket, and a cathode gasket.

18 . An electrochemical module for hydrogen processing, comprising:

a liquid-management section that facilitates transfer of water between the electrochemical module and a water circuit, the liquid-management section comprising a plurality of first fluid connectors and at least one manifold; and

a gas-management section that facilitates transfer of gas between the electrochemical module and a hydrogen circuit, the gas-management section comprising an electrochemical stack and a second fluid connector located above the liquid-management section and in fluid connection with the liquid-management section,

wherein:

the water circuit is located in a first volume, the electrochemical module is located in a second volume, and the hydrogen circuit is located in a third volume, and the first volume, the second volume, and the third volume are fluidically isolated from each other,

the electrochemical stack comprises at least one bipolar plate, a first membrane electrode assembly (MEA), and a second MEA, wherein each of the plurality of MEAs comprises an anode, a cathode, and a proton exchange membrane;

the at least one bipolar plate is in sealed engagement with the first MEA to define an anode channel therebetween;

the at least one bipolar plate is in sealed engagement with the second MEA to define a cathode channel therebetween;

each of the plurality of first fluid connectors is in fluid communication with the anode channel via the at least one manifold, and

the second fluid connector is in fluid communication with the cathode channel.

19 . The electrochemical module of claim 18 , wherein:

each of the plurality of first fluid connectors and the at least one manifold are releasably securable in fluid communication with the anode channel, and

the liquid-management section and the gas-management section are detachable from one another along an interface between the manifold and the electrochemical stack.
