Abstract

A protective member at least partially surrounds a desired length of pipe (such as a conventional landing string) and protects “umbilical” control line(s) or bundles, including pipe and umbilical line(s) installed within risers of subsea installations. At least one robust protective shell member is installed around at least a portion of a pipe string and forms at least one elongated channel. At least one umbilical control line is disposed within the elongated channel and is shielded against damage from inadvertent or unwanted abrasion, impact or other forces.

Claims (32)

1. A method for protecting an umbilical line disposed along an external surface of a pipe section comprising:

a) installing an encasement apparatus along the outer surface of said pipe section, wherein said encasement apparatus comprises:

(i) a first encasement member disposed against said pipe section and having a first elongated and recessed channel extending along the entire length of said first encasement member, wherein said first elongated and recessed channel defines a radially-outwardly facing opening along the entire length of said first elongated and recessed channel;

(ii) a second encasement member disposed against said pipe section and removably attached to said first encasement member, wherein said second encasement member has a second elongated and recessed channel extending along the entire length of said second encasement member, and wherein said second elongated and recessed channel defines a radially-outwardly facing opening along the entire length of said second elongated and recessed channel and is phased about 180 degrees around the circumference of said pipe section from said first elongated and recessed channel;

b) providing an umbilical line disposed on a reel;

c) translating a portion of said umbilical line from said reel to said first elongated and recessed channel of said encasement apparatus;

d) installing said umbilical line in said first elongated and recessed channel through said radially-outwardly facing opening of said first elongated and recessed channel while said umbilical line, pipe section and encasement apparatus are being lowered into a riser through a rotary table of a drilling rig; and

e) shielding said umbilical line from inadvertent contact with said rotary table and riser.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first and second encasement members are attached to each other using at least one mechanical fastener.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first encasement member defines a first outer peripheral surface and said umbilical line does not extend radially outward beyond said first peripheral outer surface when installed in said first elongated and recessed channel.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

a) providing a second umbilical line disposed on a second reel;

b) translating a portion of said second umbilical line from said second reel to said second elongated and recessed channel; and

c) installing said second umbilical line in said second elongated and recessed channel through said radially-outwardly facing opening of said second elongated and recessed channel.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said second encasement member defines a second outer peripheral surface and said second umbilical line does not extend radially outward beyond said second peripheral outer surface when installed in said second elongated and recessed channel.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising securing said umbilical line to said encasement apparatus.

7. The method of claim 4 , further comprising securing said second umbilical line to said encasement apparatus.

8. A method for protecting an umbilical line disposed along an external surface of a pipe section comprising:

a) installing an encasement apparatus on said pipe section, wherein said encasement apparatus comprises:

(i) a first encasement member disposed against said pipe section and having a first elongated and recessed channel extending along the entire length of said first encasement member, wherein said first elongated and recessed channel defines a radially-outwardly facing opening along the entire length of said first elongated and recessed channel;

(ii) a second encasement member disposed against said pipe section and removably attached to said first encasement member, wherein said second encasement member has a second elongated and recessed channel extending along the entire length of said second encasement member, and wherein said second elongated and recessed channel defines a radially-outwardly facing opening along the entire length of said second elongated and recessed channel and is phased about 180 degrees around the circumference of said pipe section from said first elongated and recessed channel;

b) providing a first umbilical line disposed on a first reel;

c) translating a portion of said first umbilical line from said first reel to said first elongated and recessed channel of said encasement apparatus;

d) providing a second umbilical line disposed on a second reel;

e) translating a portion of said second umbilical line from said second reel to said second elongated and recessed channel of said encasement apparatus;

f) installing said first umbilical line in said first elongated and recessed channel through said radially-outward facing opening of said first elongated and recessed channel and said second umbilical line in said second elongated and recessed channel through said radially-outwardly facing opening of said second elongated and recessed channel, while said umbilical line, pipe section and encasement apparatus are being lowered into a riser through a rotary table of a drilling rig; and

g) shielding said first and second umbilical lines from inadvertent contact with said rotary table and riser.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said first and second encasement members are attached to each other using at least one mechanical fastener.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein said first encasement member defines a first outer peripheral surface and said umbilical line does not extend radially outward beyond said first peripheral outer surface when installed in said first elongated and recessed channel.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein said second encasement member defines a second outer peripheral surface and said second umbilical line does not extend radially outward beyond said second peripheral outer surface when installed in said second elongated and recessed channel.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising securing said umbilical line to said encasement apparatus.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising securing said second umbilical line to said encasement apparatus.
