Abstract

A portable electronic device with a touch-sensitive display is disclosed. One aspect of the invention involves a computer-implemented method in which the portable electronic device: displays an application on the touch-sensitive display; and when the application is in a predefined mode, performs a predefined operation in response to each gesture of a set of multiple distinct gestures on the touch-sensitive display. Another aspect of the invention involves a computer-implemented method in which the portable electronic device: displays a first application; when the first application is in a first mode, performs a first operation upon detecting a first gesture on the touch-sensitive display; and performs the first operation upon detecting a second gesture on the touch-sensitive display, wherein the second gesture is different from the first gesture.

2 . An electronic device, comprising:

a touch screen display;

one or more processors;

memory; and

one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:

displaying a browser application; and

when the browser application is displaying a first web page in a set of web pages:

in accordance with detecting a respective tap gesture on the touch screen display while the browser application is in a first mode of operation, replacing display of the first web page with display of a next web page in the set of web pages; and

in accordance with detecting a respective swipe gesture on the touch screen display while the browser application is in the first mode of operation, replacing display of the first web page with display of the next web page in the set of web pages.

3 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the tap gesture is a tap on the right side of the touch screen display and the swipe gesture is a substantially right-to-left swipe gesture.

4 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the tap gesture is a tap on the left side of the touch screen display and the swipe gesture is a substantially left to-right swipe gesture.

5 . The electronic device of claim 2 , the one or more programs further including instructions for:

when the browser application is displaying the first web page in the set of web pages:

in accordance with detecting a third gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first web page with display of the next web page, wherein the third gesture is different from the tap gesture and the swipe gesture.

6 . The electronic device of claim 2 , the one or more programs including instructions for:

displaying an image management application;

when the image management application is displaying a first digital image in a set of digital images:

in accordance with detecting a tap gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first digital image with display of a next digital image in the set of digital images; and

in accordance with detecting a swipe gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first digital image with display of the next digital image in the set of digital images.

7 . The electronic device of claim 6 , including:

when the image management application is displaying the first digital image in the set of digital images:

in accordance with detecting a third gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first digital image with display of the next digital image in the set of digital images, wherein the third gesture is different from the tap gesture and the swipe gesture.

8 . The electronic device of claim 7 , wherein the tap gesture is a tap gesture on the right side of the touch screen display, the swipe gesture is a substantially right-to-left swipe gesture, and the third gesture is a tap gesture on a next icon.

9 . The electronic device of claim 6 , wherein replacing display of the first digital image with display of the next digital image includes displaying an animation of the first digital image moving off the touch screen display.

10 . The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein replacing display of the first web page with display of the next web page includes displaying an animation of the first web page moving off the touch screen display.

11 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, storing one or more programs configured to be executed by one or more processors of an electronic device with a touch screen display, the one or more programs including instructions for:

displaying a browser application; and

when the browser application is displaying a first web page in a set of web pages:

in accordance with detecting a respective tap gesture on the touch screen display while the browser application is in a first mode of operation, replacing display of the first web page with display of a next web page in the set of web pages; and

in accordance with detecting a respective swipe gesture on the touch screen display while the browser application is in the first mode of operation, replacing display of the first web page with display of the next web page in the set of web pages.

12 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the tap gesture is a tap on the right side of the touch screen display and the swipe gesture is a substantially right-to-left swipe gesture.

13 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the tap gesture is a tap on the left side of the touch screen display and the swipe gesture is a substantially left to-right swipe gesture.

14 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , including:

when the browser application is displaying the first web page in the set of web pages:

in accordance with detecting a third gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first web page with display of the next web page, wherein the third gesture is different from the tap gesture and the swipe gesture.

15 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , the one or more programs further including instructions for:

displaying an image management application;

when the image management application is displaying a first digital image in a set of digital images:

in accordance with detecting a tap gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first digital image with display of a next digital image in the set of digital images; and

in accordance with detecting a swipe gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first digital image with display of the next digital image in the set of digital images.

16 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , including:

when the image management application is displaying the first digital image in the set of digital images:

in accordance with detecting a third gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first digital image with display of the next digital image in the set of digital images, wherein the third gesture is different from the tap gesture and the swipe gesture.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the tap gesture is a tap gesture on the right side of the touch screen display, the swipe gesture is a substantially right-to-left swipe gesture, and the third gesture is a tap gesture on a next icon.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein replacing display of the first digital image with display of the next digital image includes displaying an animation of the first digital image moving off the touch screen display.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein replacing display of the first web page with display of the next web page includes displaying an animation of the first web page moving off the touch screen display.

20 . A method, comprising: at an electronic device with a touch screen display,

displaying a browser application; and

when the browser application is displaying a first web page in a set of web pages:

in accordance with detecting a respective tap gesture on the touch screen display while the browser application is in a first mode of operation, replacing display of the first web page with display of a next web page in the set of web pages ; and

in accordance with detecting a respective swipe gesture on the touch screen display while the browser application is in the first mode of operation, replacing display of the first web page with display of the next web page in the set of web pages.

21 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the tap gesture is a tap on the right side of the touch screen display and the swipe gesture is a substantially right-to-left swipe gesture.

22 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the tap gesture is a tap on the left side of the touch screen display and the swipe gesture is a substantially left to-right swipe gesture.

23 . The method of claim 20 , including:

when the browser application is displaying the first web page in the set of web pages:

in accordance with detecting a third gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first web page with display of the next web page , wherein the third gesture is different from the tap gesture and the swipe gesture.

24 . The method of claim 20 , including:

displaying an image management application;

when the image management application is displaying a first digital image in a set of digital images:

in accordance with detecting a tap gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first digital image with display of a next digital image in the set of digital images; and

in accordance with detecting a swipe gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first digital image with display of the next digital image in the set of digital images.

25 . The method of claim 24 , including:

when the image management application is displaying the first digital image in the set of digital images:

in accordance with detecting a third gesture on the touch screen display, replacing display of the first digital image with display of the next digital image in the set of digital images , wherein the third gesture is different from the tap gesture and the swipe gesture.

26 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the tap gesture is a tap gesture on the right side of the touch screen display, the swipe gesture is a substantially right-to-left swipe gesture, and the third gesture is a tap gesture on a next icon.

27 . The method of claim 24 , wherein replacing display of the first digital image with display of the next digital image includes displaying an animation of the first digital image moving off the touch screen display.

28 . The method of claim 20 , wherein replacing display of the first web page with display of the next web page includes displaying an animation of the first web page moving off the touch screen display.
