Abstract

Systems and methods applicable, for instance, to pipette robots. A pipette robot can perform one or more operations regarding deck calibration, one or more operations regarding pipette tip/probe calibration, one or more operations regarding pipette tip pick up, and/or one or more operations regarding tip ejection.

Claims (29)

1. A pipette robot, comprising:

a frame;

a deck operatively connected to the frame;

a gantry operatively connected to the frame;

a pipette operatively connected to the gantry, wherein said pipette comprises a pipette body;

a single motor operatively connected to the pipette body;

a plunger operatively connected to the single motor;

an ejector operatively connected to the pipette body; and

a computer operatively connected to the single motor, wherein said computer comprises:

at least one processor; and

a memory including instructions,

wherein the pipette does not include a second motor,

wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor of the computer, cause:

moving, using the single motor, the plunger through a first range of motion, wherein the pipette robot performs one or more of aspirating liquids and dispensing liquids; and

moving, using the single motor, the plunger through a second range of motion,

wherein said movement of the plunger through the second range of motion contacts the plunger with the ejector, and

wherein said movement of the plunger through the second range of motion pushes the plunger against the ejector, causing a pipette tip connected to the pipette body to be ejected.

2. The pipette robot of claim 1 , further comprising:

a limit switch operatively connected to the pipette body; and

a lead screw operatively connected to the single motor,

wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor of the computer, further cause:

moving, using the single motor, the lead screw to an upper end of travel, wherein the lead screw activates the limit switch;

determining, using the at least one processor, a first quantity of downward pulses which, when fed to the single motor, move the plunger to the first range of motion;

determining, using the at least one processor, a second quantity of downward pulses which, when fed to the single motor, move the plunger to the second range of motion; and

feeding, using the at least one processor, one of the first quantity of downward pulses or the second quantity of downward pulses to the single motor.

3. The pipette robot of claim 1 , wherein the pipette is a single channel pipette, and wherein the single motor, the plunger, and at least a portion of the ejector are internal to the single channel pipette.

4. The pipette robot of claim 1 , wherein said plunger is one of multiple plungers, wherein the pipette robot further comprises a plunger adapter operatively connected to the single motor, and wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor of the computer, further cause:

simultaneously moving, using the single motor and the plunger adapter, the multiple plungers.

5. The pipette robot of claim 4 , wherein the pipette is a multichannel pipette, and wherein the single motor, the multiple plungers, the plunger adapter, and at least a portion of the ejector are internal to the multichannel pipette.
