Abstract

A manufacturing method is provided during which a body is additively manufactured. The body includes an engine case for a gas turbine engine, a support structure and an aperture. The support structure projects out from the engine case. The support structure includes a lattice, a wall and an internal volume. The wall surrounds the lattice. The internal volume is within the support structure along the lattice. The internal volume is filled with powder. The aperture is at an intersection between the engine case and the support structure. The powder is extracted from the internal volume through the aperture.

Claims (50)

1. A manufacturing method, comprising:

additively manufacturing a body that includes

an engine case for a gas turbine engine;

a support structure projecting out from the engine case, the support structure including a lattice, a wall and an internal volume, the wall surrounding the lattice, and the internal volume within the support structure along the lattice, wherein the internal volume is filled with powder; and

an aperture at an intersection between the engine case and the support structure; and

extracting the powder from the internal volume through the aperture; wherein the body forms a stationary structure of the gas turbine engine.

2. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein the aperture is arranged at a gravitational bottom of the internal volume during at least one of the extracting of the powder or the additive manufacturing of the body.

3. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein the aperture projects through the wall.

4. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein the aperture is disposed outside of a fillet between the support structure and the engine case.

5. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein the internal volume comprises at least one of

interstices within the lattice; or

interstices between the wall and the lattice.

6. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein

the internal volume comprises a plurality of passages; and

the powder is extracted from the plurality of passages through the aperture.

7. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein

the support structure further includes a first member and a second member;

the first member projects out from the engine case along a first trajectory;

the second member projects out from the engine case along a second trajectory that is angularly offset from the first trajectory; and

the internal volume is within the first member and the second member.

8. The manufacturing method of claim 7 , wherein the first member diverges away from the second member as the first member extends along the first trajectory.

9. The manufacturing method of claim 7 , wherein the first member converges towards the second member as the first member extends along the first trajectory.

10. The manufacturing method of claim 7 , wherein an intersection between the first member and the second member is located at the engine case.

11. The manufacturing method of claim 7 , wherein an intersection between the first member and the second member is located away from the engine case.

12. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein the internal volume comprises a passage that follows a tortuous path through the support structure to the aperture.

13. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein the lattice structure comprises a triply periodic minimal surface structure.

14. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein

a bore extends within the lattice; and

the bore is fluidly decoupled from the internal volume.

15. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein

the body further includes at least a section of a vehicle body; and

the support structure extends between and connects the engine case and the section of the vehicle body.

16. The manufacturing method of claim 1 , wherein the body further includes an actuator mount spaced outboard from the engine case.

17. A manufacturing method, comprising:

additively manufacturing a body including an engine case of a gas turbine engine and a support structure projecting out from the engine case, the engine case extending axially along and circumferentially around an axial centerline, the support structure including a lattice, an exterior wall and a passage, the lattice comprising a triply periodic minimal surface structure, the exterior wall surrounding the lattice, and the passage extending within the support structure through the lattice, wherein the body forms a stationary structure of the gas turbine engine; and

extracting powder out of the passage through an aperture in the body.

18. A manufacturing method, comprising:

additively manufacturing a body that includes

an engine case for a gas turbine engine;

a support structure projecting out from the engine case, the support structure including a lattice, a wall and an internal volume, the wall surrounding the lattice, and the internal volume within the support structure along the lattice, wherein the internal volume is filled with powder; and

an aperture at an intersection between the engine case and the support structure; and

extracting the powder from the internal volume through the aperture; wherein

the body further includes a combustor; and

wherein the engine case extends axially along and circumferentially around the combustor.

19. A manufacturing method, comprising:

additively manufacturing a body that includes

an engine case for a gas turbine engine;

a support structure projecting out from the engine case, the support structure including a lattice, a wall and an internal volume, the wall surrounding the lattice, and the internal volume within the support structure along the lattice, wherein the internal volume is filled with powder; and

an aperture at an intersection between the engine case and the support structure; and

extracting the powder from the internal volume through the aperture; wherein the body is configured to house a compressor rotor and a turbine rotor within an interior volume of the body.
