Abstract

A sensor assembly for autonomous vehicles includes a side mirror assembly configured to mount to a vehicle. The side mirror assembly includes a first camera having a field of view in a direction opposite a direction of forward travel of the vehicle; a second camera having a field of view in the direction of forward travel of the vehicle; and a third camera having a field of view in a direction substantially perpendicular to the direction of forward travel of the vehicle. The first camera, the second camera, and the third camera are oriented to provide, in combination with a fourth camera configured to be mounted on a roof of the vehicle, an uninterrupted camera field of view from the direction of forward travel of the vehicle to a direction opposite the direction of forward travel of the vehicle.

Claims (42)

1 . A sensor assembly for an autonomous vehicle, comprising:

an arm having a proximal end adjacent the autonomous vehicle, a distal end, and a vertical medial plane intersecting and parallel to a vector created by the proximal end and the distal end, the arm having a surface at the distal end that extends at an angle between about 10 degrees and about 170 degrees of a vertical axis coincident with the vertical medial plane;

a rotational coupling at the proximal end of the arm configured to rotate about an axis coincident with the vertical medial plane; and

a housing supported at the distal end of the arm, the housing having:

one or more radars coupled to the arm, at least one radar of the one or more radars is coupled to the surface of the arm at the distal end such that the at least one radar is at a same angle as the surface and is directed between about 10 degrees and about 170 degrees of the vertical axis coincident with the vertical medial plane and directed within about 5 degrees of a horizontal plane perpendicular to the medial vertical plane; and

a side view mirror coupled to a rear facing side of the housing,

wherein the arm is configured to support the one or more radars laterally away from a side surface of the autonomous vehicle, and

wherein at least one of the one or more radars is angled with respect to the side view mirror and the at least one of the one or more radars extends distally beyond the side view mirror.

2 . The sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one radar of the one or more radars has a viewing angle of about 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees, or 360 degrees.

3 . The sensor assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a second mirror coupled to the rear facing side of the housing below the side view mirror, the second mirror having a convex mirrored surface.

4 . The sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one radar of the one or more radars is positioned between 50 mm and 650 mm from the proximal end.

5 . The sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one radar of the one or more radars is positioned at the rear facing side of the housing.

6 . The sensor assembly of claim 1 , the one or more radars comprising a front view radar having an angle of about 10 degrees with respect to the vertical axis.

7 . The sensor assembly of claim 6 , the one or more radars comprising a rear view radar having an angle within about 170 degrees with respect to the vertical axis.

8 . The sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one radar of the one or more radars is positioned at a lower portion of the housing.

9 . The sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one radar of the one or more radars is positioned at an upper portion of the housing.

The sensor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing, the one or more radars, and the arm form a side mirror assembly configured to be coupled to an A-pillar of the autonomous vehicle, wherein the arm extends between the A-pillar and the housing such that the one or more radars are supported laterally away from the side surface of the autonomous vehicle.

11 . The sensor assembly of claim 1 , further comprising one or more cameras coupled to the housing.

12 . The sensor assembly of claim 11 , wherein at least one camera of the one or more cameras are coupled to an upper portion of the housing.

13 . The sensor assembly of claim 11 , wherein the one or more cameras comprises at least two cameras coupled to the housing such that the at least two cameras having a portion of each field of view in opposing directions.

14 . The sensor assembly of claim 13 , further comprising one or more lidars or a thermal camera.

15 . The sensor assembly of claim 14 , wherein the one or more lidars comprise two or more lidars or the one or more radars comprises two or more radars.

16 . The sensor assembly of claim 11 , wherein the one or more cameras comprises at least two cameras coupled to the housing such that the at least two cameras having a portion of each field of view in substantially perpendicular directions.

17 . The sensor assembly of claim 16 , further comprising one or more lidars or a thermal camera.

18 . The sensor assembly of claim 17 , wherein the one or more lidars comprise two or more lidars or the one or more radars comprises two or more radars.

19 . The sensor assembly of claim 1 , further comprising one or more lidars.

20 . The sensor assembly of claim 19 , wherein the one or more lidars comprise two or more lidars or the one or more radars comprises two or more radars.

21 . The sensor assembly of claim 19 , further comprising one or more cameras.

22 . The sensor assembly of claim 21 , wherein the one or more cameras comprises at least two cameras, wherein at least two cameras of the at least two cameras have a portion of each field of view in opposing directions.

23 . The sensor assembly of claim 21 , wherein the one or more cameras comprises at least two cameras, wherein at least two cameras of the at least two cameras have a portion of each field of view in substantially perpendicular directions.

The sensor assembly of claim 1 , further comprising one or more lidars, a thermal camera, a first camera having a field of view including a direction opposite of a direction of travel, a second camera having a field of view including the direction of travel, a third camera having a field of view including a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel.

25 . The sensor assembly of claim 24 , wherein the second camera is a wide field of view camera.

26 . The sensor assembly of claim 24 , wherein the second camera is a narrow field of view camera.

27 . The sensor assembly of claim 24 , wherein the one or more lidars comprise two or more lidars or the one or more radars comprises two or more radars.

28 . An autonomous vehicle comprising:

the sensor assembly of claim 1 ,

wherein the one or more radars extends a predetermined distance laterally away from the autonomous vehicle.

29 . The autonomous vehicle of claim 23 , wherein the one or more radars is located vertically below a hood of the autonomous vehicle.

30 . An autonomous vehicle comprising:

two or more sensor assemblies according to claim 1 ,

wherein a first sensor assembly of the two or more sensor assemblies is coupled to a left side of the autonomous vehicle and a second sensor assembly of the two or more sensor assemblies is coupled to a right side of the autonomous vehicle, and

wherein each of the first sensor assembly and the second sensor assembly extend laterally away from the left side and the right side, respectively, of the autonomous vehicle.
