Abstract

Display units for digital out of home advertising with orientation-based operations adjustment and related methods are provided. The display unit includes an electronic display. A controller for the display unit receives orientation data from an orientation detection device, determines an orientation of the display unit, and adjusts operations of the display unit based, at least in part, on the orientation.

Claims (67)

2. The display unit of claim 1 wherein:

said controller is configured to:

determine an altitude for said electronic display based, at least in part, on said orientation of said electronic display;

at one or more times throughout a day, determine a solar position relative to said electronic display based on said azimuth and said altitude; and

adjust operations of said display unit based, at least in part, on said solar position relative to said azimuth and said altitude of said electronic display.

3. The display unit of claim 2 further comprising:

a thermal management subsystem, wherein said controller is configured to adjust operations of said thermal management subsystem as part of said thermal control adjustment based, at least in part, on the solar position relative to said azimuth and said altitude of said electronic display.

4. The display unit of claim 3 wherein:

said thermal management subsystem comprises an airflow pathway and one or more fans configured to move ambient air through said airflow pathway when operated.

5. The display unit of claim 4 wherein:

said airflow pathway comprises a closed loop airflow pathway; and

said one or more fans are configured to move circulating gas through said closed loop airflow pathway when operated.

6. The display unit of claim 2 wherein:

said controller is configured to adjust said illumination levels of said electronic display based, at least in part, on the solar position relative to said azimuth and said altitude of said electronic display.

7. The display unit of claim 2 further comprising:

a location detection device;

a timekeeping device; and

one or more databases comprising solar position information, wherein the controller is configured to:

receive location data from the location detection device;

receive date and time data from the timekeeping device;

retrieve the solar position information from the one or more databases specific to the location data and the date and time data; and

determine the solar position relative to said azimuth and said altitude of said electronic display based, at least in part, on the solar position information, wherein the solar position is determined, at least in part, by determining a solar angle between the solar position and the azimuth and said altitude of the electronic display.

8. The display unit of claim 7 wherein:

said controller is configured to increase cooling provided by a thermal management subsystem as the solar angle approaches a predetermined threshold; and

said controller is configured to decrease cooling provided by the thermal management subsystem as the determined solar angle moves away from the predetermined threshold.

9. The display unit of claim 7 wherein:

said controller is configured to increase illumination levels for the electronic display as the solar angle approaches a predetermined threshold; and

said controller is configured to decrease illumination levels for the electronic display as the solar angle moves away from the predetermined threshold.

10. The display unit of claim 7 further comprising:

said controller is configured to adjust operations of a thermal management subsystem and illumination of the electronic display based, at least in part, on the solar angle.

11. The display unit of claim 1 further comprising:

a frame; and

a housing connected to said frame in a moveable manner, wherein said orientation detection device is connected to said housing for movement therewith, and wherein said controller is configured to determine that said housing is in an opened position where said orientation data indicates that the orientation is within a predetermined threshold of an anticipated opened position orientation and that the housing is in a closed position where said orientation data indicates the orientation is within a predetermined threshold from an anticipated closed position orientation.

12. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a shock or vibration sensor, wherein said controller is configured to receive shock or vibration data from said shock or vibration sensors, respectively, and determine that said display unit is damaged where said received vibration or shock data is above a predetermined threshold and said orientation is outside of a predetermined range of expected orientations for the display unit.

13. The display unit of claim 12 wherein:

said controller is configured to generate an electronic notification for transmission to a remote device upon said determination that said display unit is damaged.

14. The display unit of claim 1 wherein:

said orientation detection device comprises one or more of: a magnetometer and an inclinometer.

15. The display unit of claim 1 wherein:

said electronic display comprises a directly backlit liquid crystal display.

16. A method for modifying operations of a display unit for digital out of home advertising based on orientation, said method comprising:

installing said display unit at an outdoor location where it is regularly exposed to ambient solar light, wherein said display unit comprises an electronic display with adjustable illumination levels and a thermal management subsystem;

receiving, at a controller, orientation data from an orientation detection device installed at the display unit;

determining an azimuth of the electronic display at the controller, based at least in part, on said orientation data;

determining an altitude of said electronic display, based at least in part, on said orientation data;

at multiple times, determining a solar position relative to the azimuth and altitude of the electronic display; and

commanding, by way of said controller, adjustments to operations of said display unit based, at least in part, on the solar position relative to the azimuth and the altitude of the electronic display, said adjustments to operations of said display unit comprising adjusting at least one of: said illumination levels of said electronic display and operational levels of said thermal management subsystem.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

determining a location of the display unit;

determining a date and time; and

retrieving, from one or more databases, solar path information for said location of said display unit specific to the date and time, wherein the solar path information is used to determine the solar position relative to the azimuth and the altitude of the electronic display.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein:
