Abstract

Systems and methods for selectively attaching an accessory mount to a helmet are disclosed. A carrier may be used to position the accessory mount on the helmet. The accessory mount may be positioned on the helmet without engaging the rim of the helmet. The carrier may be compatible with various accessory mounts to permit mounting of different accessories. The accessory mount may be a powered mount for attachment to a Night Vision Device (NVD) such as Enhanced Night Vision Goggles (ENVG), or the accessory mount may be a non-powered accessory mount.

Claims (20)

1. A helmet system, the helmet system comprising:

a helmet;

a power source integrated into the helmet, wherein the power source is configured to provide power to an accessory mounted to the helmet;

a power cable coupled to the power source, wherein the power cable delivers power from the power source to an accessory mount;

a carrier attachable to the helmet and to the accessory mount, the carrier having a front and a back, wherein the back of the carrier faces the helmet when the carrier is attached to the helmet; and

the accessory mount is removably attachable to the helmet and includes a plurality of electrical contacts and a pair of horizontally oriented slots, with one of the pair of horizontally oriented slots located at a top edge of the accessory mount and another of the pair of horizontally oriented slots located at a bottom edge of the accessory mount, wherein the plurality of electrical contacts are removably couplable to the power cable, and wherein the pair of horizontally oriented slots are configured to engage an accessory to thereby mount the accessory to the helmet;

wherein the accessory mount comprises a mounting plate; and

wherein the entire mounting plate is insertable into the carrier in a direction from the back of the carrier to the front of the carrier through the opening in the back of the carrier.

2. The helmet system of claim 1 wherein the carrier has the opening extending through the carrier from the back of the carrier to the front of the carrier.

3. The helmet system of claim 1 wherein the mounting plate includes an inverted U-shaped retainer portion.

4. The helmet system of claim 1 wherein the accessory mount is compatible with receiving an accessory that requires external power from the helmet.

5. The helmet system of claim 1 wherein the power source is a battery pack.

6. A helmet system, the helmet system comprising:

a helmet;

a carrier attachable to the helmet, the carrier having a front and a back, wherein the back of the carrier faces the helmet when the carrier is attached to the helmet;

a power source integrated into the helmet, wherein the power source is configured to provide power to an accessory mounted to the helmet;

a power cable coupled to the power source, wherein the power cable delivers power from the power source to an accessory mount;

the accessory mount is removably attachable to the helmet and to the carrier, the accessory mount includes a mounting plate and a plurality of electrical contacts, wherein the plurality of electrical contacts are removably couplable to the power cable, and wherein the entire mounting plate is insertable into the carrier in a direction from the back of the carrier to the front of the carrier through an opening in the back of the carrier to couple the accessory mount to the carrier.

7. The helmet system of claim 6 wherein the accessory mount includes a pair of horizontally oriented slots, with one of the pair of horizontally oriented slots located at a top edge of the accessory mount and another of the pair of horizontally oriented slots located at a bottom edge of the accessory mount.

8. The helmet system of claim 7 wherein the pair of horizontally oriented slots are configured to engage an accessory to thereby mount the accessory to the helmet.
