Abstract

The present disclosure provides a method for controlling a surgical instrument. The method includes connecting a power assembly to a control circuit, wherein the power assembly is configured to provide a source voltage, energizing, by the power assembly, a voltage boost convertor circuit configured to provide a set voltage greater than the source voltage, and energizing, by the voltage boost convertor, one or more voltage convertors configured to provide one or more operating voltages to one or more circuit components.

Claims (48)

1. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a motor;

a motor power interrupt circuit coupled to the motor;

a power source connector coupled between the motor power interrupt circuit and the motor;

a knife operably coupled to and movable by an actuation of the motor;

a sensor to measure a real-time parameter of the knife; and

a processor coupled to the motor, the motor power interrupt circuit, and the sensor, wherein the processor is to:

monitor the real-time parameter of the knife, wherein the real-time parameter measured by the sensor comprises at least one of a real-time velocity of the knife, a real-time current of the motor, a real-time acceleration of the surgical stapler, or a real-time position of the knife;

compare the real-time parameter relative to a predetermined range of values to produce an output; and

supply an activation signal to the motor power interrupt circuit to disconnect the motor from the power source connector based on the output.

2. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the motor power interrupt circuit comprises a motor power switch configurable in an open state to disconnect the motor from the power source connector and a closed state to connect the motor to the power source connector.

3. The surgical stapler of claim 2 , wherein the motor power switch is to transition from the closed state to the open state based on application of the activation signal to the motor power interrupt circuit.

4. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a first sensor and a second sensor and the real-time parameter comprises a first real-time parameter and a second real-time parameter, wherein the processor is coupled to the first sensor and the second sensor, wherein the first sensor is to measure a first real-time parameter of the knife and the second sensor is to measure a second real-time parameter of the knife that is different from the first real-time parameter of the knife, and wherein the processor is to:

determine a first value associated with the first real-time parameter of the knife and a second value associated with the second real-time parameter of the knife; and

disconnect the motor from the power source connector based on a deviation of the first value or the second value from a predetermined relationship.

5. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising an interchangeable shaft comprising an end effector configured to receive a staple cartridge.

6. The surgical stapler of claim 5 , further comprising a firing actuator comprising a distal head, wherein the distal head comprises the knife, a first cam, and a second cam, and wherein the firing actuator is movable relative to the end effector during a firing stroke.

7. The surgical stapler of claim 6 , wherein the end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw between an open position and a closed position, wherein the first cam is configured to engage the first jaw during the firing stroke, and wherein the second cam is configure to engage the second jaw during the firing stroke.

8. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a motor;

a motor power interrupt circuit coupled to the motor;

a power source connector coupled between the motor and the motor power interrupt circuit;

a firing bar operably coupled to the motor to move based on an actuation of the motor;

a sensor to measure a real-time parameter of the firing bar; and

a processor coupled to the motor, the motor power interrupt circuit, and the sensor, wherein the processor is to:

monitor the real-time parameter of the firing bar, wherein the real-time parameter measured by the sensor comprises at least one of a real-time velocity of the firing bar, a real-time current of the motor, a real-time acceleration of the surgical stapler, or a real-time position of the firing bar;

compare the real-time parameter relative to a predetermined range of values to produce an output; and

supply an activation signal to the motor power interrupt circuit to disconnect the motor from the power source connector based on the output.

9. The surgical stapler of claim 8 , wherein the motor power interrupt circuit comprises a motor power switch configurable in an open state to disconnect the motor from the power source connector and a closed state to connect the motor to the power source connector.

10. The surgical stapler of claim 9 , wherein the motor power switch is to transition from the closed state to the open state based on application of the activation signal to the motor power interrupt circuit.

11. The surgical stapler of claim 8 , wherein the sensor comprises a first sensor and a second sensor and the real-time parameter comprises a first real-time parameter and a second real-time parameter, wherein the processor is coupled to the first sensor and the second sensor, wherein the first sensor is to measure a first real-time parameter of the firing bar and the second sensor is to measure a second real-time parameter of the firing bar that is different from the first real-time parameter of the firing bar, and wherein the processor is to:

determine a first value associated with the first real-time parameter of the firing bar and a second value associated with the second real-time parameter of the firing bar; and
