Abstract

Embodiments describe an eartip including an eartip body having an attachment end and an interfacing end opposite from the attachment end. The eartip body can include an inner eartip body having a sidewall extending between the interfacing end and the attachment end, the sidewall defining a channel and having a first thickness near the attachment end and a second thickness different from the first thickness at the interfacing end. The eartip can also include an attachment structure coupled to the inner eartip body at the attachment end, the attachment structure having an inner surface and an outer surface. The attachment structure can include an upper region interfacing with the sidewall and defining discrete through-holes, a lower region below the upper region where the inner surface defines a plurality of recesses positioned around the lower region, and a mesh extending across the channel and into the upper region.

Claims (38)

1. A deformable eartip sized and shaped to be inserted into an ear canal, the deformable eartip comprising:

an eartip body having first and second opposing ends, the eartip body comprising:

an inner eartip body having a sidewall that defines a sound channel through the eartip body from the first end to the second end; and

an outer eartip body integrally formed with the inner eartip body at the second end and extending fully around at least a portion of the inner eartip body towards the first end in a spaced apart relationship with the inner eartip body defining a deflection zone between the inner and outer eartip bodies;

a first conductive structure formed on an outer surface of the inner eartip body that faces the outer eartip body;

a second conductive structure formed on an inner surface of the outer eartip body that faces the inner eartip body and positioned in an oppositional relationship with the first conductive structure; and

a rigid frame coupled to the first end of the eartip, the rigid frame having a sidewall extending around a periphery of the frame and defining a centrally located opening in the frame axially aligned with the sound channel.

2. The deformable eartip set forth in claim 1 wherein the first conductive structures extends fully around a circumference of the inner eartip body.

3. The deformable eartip set forth in claim 1 wherein the second conductive structure extends fully around a circumference of the inner eartip body in a spaced apart relationship with the outer surface of the inner eartip body.

4. The deformable eartip set forth in claim 1 wherein the first and second conductive structures form a capacitive circuit element on the deformable eartip.

5. The deformable eartip set forth in claim 1 wherein the first conductive structure comprises a metal plate positioned on an outer surface of inner eartip body.

6. The deformable eartip set forth in claim 1 wherein each of the first and second conductive structures encircle a portion of the sound channel.

7. The deformable eartip set forth in claim 1 wherein each of the first and second conductive structures comprise strips of conductive plating positioned directly across from one another to form a capacitor.

8. The deformable eartip set forth in claim 7 wherein each of the first and second conductive structures extends around only a portion of a circumference of the deformable eartip.

9. The deformable eartip set forth in claim 1 wherein the outer eartip body is configured to bend and conform to contours of the ear canal, when the deformable eartip is inserted within an ear canal, forming an acoustic seal with surfaces of the ear canal that prevents sound from leaking out of the ear canal.

10. The deformable eartip set forth in claim 1 wherein the outer eartip body is configured to bend and conform to contours of the ear canal, when the deformable eartip is inserted within the ear canal, such that at least a portion of the second conductive structure moves closer to the first conductive structure.

11. A deformable eartip sized and shaped to be inserted into an ear canal, the deformable eartip comprising:

an eartip body having first and second opposing ends, the eartip body comprising:

an inner eartip body having a sidewall that defines a sound channel through the eartip body from the first end to the second end; and

an outer eartip body integrally formed with the inner eartip body at the second end and extending fully around at least a portion of the inner eartip body towards the first end in a spaced apart relationship with the inner eartip body defining a deflection zone between the inner and outer eartip bodies;

a first conductive structure formed on an outer surface of the inner eartip body that faces the outer eartip body; and

a second conductive structure formed on an inner surface of the outer eartip body that faces the inner eartip body and positioned in an oppositional relationship with the first conductive structure;

wherein the first conductive structure is part of the inner eartip body and formed by doping at least a portion of the inner eartip body with conductive material such that a doped portion of the inner eartip body is the first conductive structure.

12. A detachable eartip for an in-ear headphone, the detachable eartip comprising:

a compliant eartip body having first and second opposing ends, the compliant eartip body comprising:

an inner eartip body having a sidewall that defines a sound channel through the eartip body from the first end to the second end; and

an outer eartip body integrally formed with the inner eartip body at the second end and extending fully around at least a portion of the inner eartip body towards the first end in a spaced apart relationship with the inner eartip body defining a deflection zone between the inner and outer eartip bodies;

a capacitive element comprising a first conductive structure formed on an outer surface of the inner eartip body that faces the outer eartip body and a second conductive structure formed on an inner surface of the outer eartip body that faces the inner eartip body and positioned in an oppositional relationship with the first conductive structure, wherein, when the detachable eartip is inserted within the ear canal, the outer eartip body is configured to bend and conform to contours of the ear canal changing a capacitance of the capacitive element; and

a rigid frame coupled to the first end of the compliant eartip body, the rigid frame having a sidewall extending around a periphery of the rigid frame and defining a centrally located opening in the rigid frame axially aligned with the sound channel.
