Abstract

Compositions comprising asphalt and corn oil are provided, as are the shingles made using the compositions, methods for making the compositions, and methods for making the shingles. The compositions comprise mixtures of asphalt and corn oil, and the mixtures are oxidized to attain desirable properties.

Claims (12)

1. A method for forming a shingle coating composition, the method comprising:

(a) adding corn oil to asphalt to form a mixture, wherein the corn oil is obtained as a byproduct of ethanol fermentation and includes fatty acid ethyl esters obtained from esterification during the fermentation and includes ethyl linoleate, ethyl linolenate, ethyl oleate, ethyl palmitate, and ethyl stearate;

(b) oxidizing the mixture to a desired softening point; and

wherein the shingle coating composition has a softening point of about 210° F. to about 235° F. as measured pursuant to ASTM D36.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mixture of asphalt and corn oil is oxidized with nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, chlorine, or combination thereof without use of a catalyst.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the corn oil contains the fatty acid ethyl esters in an amount of about 10% w/w or more.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the shingle coating composition has a penetration value of at least about 10 dmm at 25° C. as measured pursuant to ASTM D5.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the shingle coating composition has a melt viscosity at 400° F. of 150 cps to 450 cps.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the shingle coating composition has a higher softening point as measured pursuant to ASTM D36 and a higher penetration value at 25° C. as measured pursuant to ASTM D5 as compared to a shingle coating composition without the corn oil.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the shingle coating composition has a melt viscosity at 400° F. of 150 cps to 450 cps.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the corn oil further includes free fatty acids selected form arachidic acid, caproic acid, capric acid, caprylic acid, lauric acid, linolenic acid, linoleic acid, myristic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, or combinations thereof.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the corn oil includes less than 15% w/w of the free fatty acids.
