Abstract

An apparatus and method of use for dampening shock and vibration imparted on a unified (e.g., single) and/or dual telemetry measurement-while-drilling (MWD) assembly by a drilling system during the drilling of a wellbore in a subterranean formation is provided. The apparatus may be configured to be threadably engaged and housed within the drilling system, wherein the apparatus reciprocates axially with the MWD assembly, dampening axial and torsional shock and vibration imparted on the assembly, while maintain mud-pulse and electromagnetic signals transmitted by the assembly.

Claims (27)

1 . An apparatus configured for incorporation into a drilling system, the drilling system having a dual telemetry measurement-while-drilling (MWD) assembly, the apparatus for dampening shock and vibration movement imparted on the MWD assembly by the drilling system, comprising:

a tubular housing forming a central housing bore, the central bore for housing

a dual telemetry MWD assembly,

at least one first movement dampening element positioned at or near the MWD assembly for dampening shock and vibration movement imparted axially on the MWD assembly,

at least one annular ring positioned between the at least one movement dampening element and the MWD assembly for securely receiving, and reciprocating axially with, the MWD assembly, an outer surface of the at least one annular ring comprises a substantially circular cross-section for decoupling the MWD assembly from the inner surface of the tubular housing, while maintaining electrical connectivity therebetween for transmission of an EM signal, and

at least one flow sleeve for slidably receiving and localizing the mud pulser for generating a mud pulse signal.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus comprises at least two first movement dampening elements and the at least one annular ring is positioned therebetween.

3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein one of the at least two first movement dampening elements is positioned uphole of the MWD assembly and another one of the at least two movement dampening elements is positioned downhole of the MWD assembly.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first movement dampening element comprises a spring.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus further comprises at least one secondary movement dampening element.

6 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus further comprises at least one torsional absorber operably connected to the MWD assembly.

7 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the torsional absorber comprises a flex rod threadably engaged to the at least one annular ring.

8 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface of one of the at least one annular ring comprises a profile for correspondingly interfacing to and rotationally locking the MWD assembly with an inner surface of the tubular housing.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the profile comprises a substantially polygonal cross-section.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tubular housing comprises at least two tubulars.

11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the at least two tubulars are operably connected to form at one electrical gap connection.

12 . A method of dampening shock and vibration movement imparted by a drilling system on a dual telemetry MWD assembly incorporated into the drilling system, the drilling system used to drill a wellbore in a subterranean formation, the method comprising:

providing an apparatus configured for incorporation into the drilling system, the apparatus

forming a tubular housing for receiving the MWD assembly, the apparatus configured for suspending the MWD assembly within the housing by at least one movement dampening element for dampening shock and vibration movement imparted axially on the MWD assembly, the MWD assembly being rotationally decoupled from the tubular housing by at least one annular ring for securely receiving, and reciprocating axially with, the MWD, the at least one annular ring being positioned between the at least one movement dampening element and the MWD assembly and having an outer surface comprising a substantially circular cross-section, enabling transmission of a mud pulse signal and maintaining electrical connectivity for transmission of an EM signal, and

running the apparatus into the subterranean formation with the drilling system to drill the wellbore.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises providing at least one torsional absorber for dampening shock and vibration movement imparted torsionally on the MWD assembly.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises providing at least one secondary dampening element for enhancing dampening of axial shock and vibration movement.

15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises providing a rotation lock for preventing or limiting rotation of the MWD assembly relative to the drilling system.

16 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises rotationally decoupling the MWD assembly from the drill string while providing axial isolation.

17 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises operating the MWD assembly to transmit both mud-pulse (MP) and electromagnetic (EM) telemetry information from the formation.

18 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the method comprises providing an electrical gap connection.

19 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the electrical gap connection is formed in the MWD assembly and in the tubular housing.
