Abstract

Bone anchor implants, assemblies, systems, instruments, and methods thereof. The bone anchors may be threaded or non-threaded, adjustable or expandable, stackable, or otherwise configured to promote fixation of the sacroiliac joint. The bone anchors may be used independently or may be configured to integrate with long rod constructs, for example, with a tulip or other suitable attachment interface, to fuse the sacroiliac joint.

Claims (29)

1 . An expandable implant comprising:

a hollow dowel extending along a central longitudinal axis, the dowel defining a center channel in fluid communication with a plurality of openings;

a plurality of moveable pins, each pin having an inner end receivable in the central channel and an outer end configured to eject from the opening in the dowel; and

a central expansion key sized and dimensioned to fit within the center channel, wherein movement of the central expansion key causes the pins to extend radially outward from the dowel.

2 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein the dowel has a cylindrical shape and extends from a proximal end to a distal end, and the distal end of the dowel has a conically narrowed distal tip to facilitate insertion into bone.

3 . The implant of claim 2 , wherein the central expansion key has a cylindrical body and extends from a proximal end to a distal end, the proximal end of the expansion key having an enlarged flange configured to abut the proximal end of the dowel.

4 . The implant of claim 1 , where each pin has a cylindrical body, and the outer end of each pin is conically shaped.

5 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein the inner end of each pin includes an enlarged rim to help retain the pin in the opening.

6 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein the pins are positioned perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the dowel.

7 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein the pins are arranged in a pattern around the periphery of the dowel.

8 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein the pins are arranged in a pattern of six rows equidistantly positioned about an outer surface of the dowel.

9 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein in a retracted position the pins are retracted fully inside the dowel, and when the expansion key is translated distally, the pins are deployed radially outward and away from one another.

10 . An expandable implant comprising:

an outer sleeve extending along a central longitudinal axis, the outer sleeve defining a center channel in fluid communication with a plurality of openings;

a plurality of moveable teeth, each tooth having an inner end receivable in the central channel and an outer end configured to eject from the opening in the outer sleeve; and

an inner shaft sized and dimensioned to fit within the center channel, wherein movement of the inner shaft causes the teeth to extend radially outward from the outer sleeve.

11 . The implant of claim 10 , wherein the outer sleeve is a polygonal pin.

12 . The implant of claim 11 , wherein the polygonal pin is a hexahedron with six planar faces.

13 . The implant of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of openings includes a single opening defined in each planar face for receiving the respective teeth.

14 . The implant of claim 10 , wherein the inner end of the teeth are attached to the inner shaft.

15 . The implant of claim 14 , wherein when the inner shaft translates axially, the teeth flex or bend relative to the inner shaft, thereby causing the teeth to extend distally and radially outward.

16 . The implant of claim 10 , wherein each tooth includes a tapered section along an upper face of the tooth.

17 . A method for stabilizing a sacroiliac joint, the method comprising:

posteriorly accessing a spine of a patient;

inserting an expandable anchor into the sacroiliac joint, the anchor having a body with a plurality of expandable pins; and

inserting an expansion key through the body of the anchor to deploy the pins, thereby creating a strong press-fit in the sacroiliac joint.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the expansion key is rotated to deploy the pins.

19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the expansion key is axially translated to deploy the pins.

20 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the sacroiliac joint is accessed with a robotic and navigational system.
