Abstract

A transmission system that includes a multi-speed gearbox. The multi-speed gearbox, in one example, includes a primary shaft with a first set of gears positioned thereon, a secondary shaft with a second set of gears positioned thereon, an internal combustion engine (ICE) clutch configured to selectively couple an ICE to the primary shaft, and an electric drive interface gear that is positioned axially between two gears in the first set of gears, configured to couple to an electric machine, and coupled to a gear in the second set of gears.

Claims (42)

1. A hybrid transmission system, comprising:

a multi-speed gearbox including:

a primary shaft with a first set of gears positioned coaxial thereto and positioned coaxial to an internal combustion engine (ICE);

a secondary shaft with a second set of gears positioned coaxial thereto;

an ICE clutch configured to selectively couple the ICE to the primary shaft;

an electric drive interface gear that is positioned axially between two gears in the first set of gears, configured to rotationally couple to an electric machine, and meshing with a gear in the second set of gears; and

an output shaft that includes an output shaft gear which is fixedly coupled thereto meshes with a gear on the secondary shaft.

2. The hybrid transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the multi-speed gearbox further comprises:

an electric machine gear set that is radially aligned with the electric drive interface gear.

3. The hybrid transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the multi-speed gearbox further comprises:

an electric drive clutch configured to selectively couple the electric drive interface gear to the primary shaft.

4. The hybrid transmission system of claim 3 , further comprising a gear clutch coupled to the secondary shaft and positioned in a similar axial position with the electric drive clutch.

5. The hybrid transmission system of claim 4 , wherein the gear clutch is a synchronizer, a dog clutch, or a sliding sleeve clutch.

6. The hybrid transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the electric machine and the ICE are configured to transfer mechanical power to a first gear combination and a second gear combination, respectively and wherein the first gear combination and the second gear combination have inequivalent gear ratios.

7. The hybrid transmission system of claim 1 , wherein during an electric vehicle EV drive mode the primary shaft does not rotate.

8. The hybrid transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the multi-speed gearbox further comprises a differential rotationally coupled to the output shaft.

9. The hybrid transmission system of claim 8 , wherein the differential is included in a rear axle assembly.

10. The hybrid transmission system of claim 8 , wherein the multi-speed gearbox further comprises:

a park lock assembly designed to selectively inhibit rotation of a parking sprocket coupled to the output shaft.

11. The hybrid transmission system of claim 1 , further comprising a gear fixedly coupled to the electric drive interface gear and idly mounted to the primary shaft and meshing with a gear in the second set of gears.

12. The hybrid transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the ICE, the electric machine, the primary shaft, and the secondary shaft are arranged parallel to one another.

13. The hybrid transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the multi-speed gearbox further comprises:

an electric machine gear set including a first electric machine gear coupled to a rotor shaft of the electric machine and a second electric machine gear that meshes with the electric drive interface gear.

14. A hybrid transmission system, comprising:

a multi-speed gearbox including:

an internal combustion engine (ICE) clutch configured to selectively couple an ICE to a primary shaft; and

an electric drive clutch coupled to the primary shaft and designed to selectively engage an electric drive interface gear, wherein the electric drive interface gear is idly mounted to the primary shaft and meshes with a gear on a secondary shaft;

wherein the electric drive interface gear is positioned axially between two gears that are coaxial to the primary shaft; and

an output shaft that includes an output shaft gear which is fixedly coupled thereto meshes with a gear on the secondary shaft.

15. The hybrid transmission system of claim 14 , wherein:

the electric drive clutch is configured to be shifted into a disengaged position and an engaged position;

in the disengaged position the electric drive clutch is disengaged from the electric drive interface gear and mechanical power is transferred from the electric drive interface gear directly to the secondary shaft, bypassing the primary shaft; and

in the engaged position the electric drive clutch engages the electric drive interface gear and mechanical power is transferred from the electric drive interface gear to a second primary shaft.

16. The hybrid transmission system of claim 14 , wherein the electric drive clutch is a synchronizer, a dog clutch, or a sliding sleeve clutch.

17. The hybrid transmission system of claim 16 , wherein the multi-speed gearbox further comprises:

a gear fixedly coupled to the electric drive interface gear and idly mounted to the primary shaft; and

an electric machine gear set that is radially aligned with the electric drive interface gear.

18. The hybrid transmission system of claim 14 , wherein the gear on the secondary shaft is idly mounted thereto.

19. The hybrid transmission system of claim 14 , wherein the hybrid transmission system is a transaxle.

20. The hybrid transmission system of claim 14 , wherein:

the multi-speed gearbox further comprises a park lock assembly coupled to the output shaft in the multi-speed gearbox;

the park lock assembly is designed to selectively inhibit rotation of the output shaft; and the output shaft is coupled to a differential.
