Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for portable and compact nitric oxide (NO) generation that can be embedded into other therapeutic devices or used alone. In some embodiments, an ambulatory NO generation system can be comprised of a controller and disposable cartridge. The cartridge can contain filters and scavengers for preparing the gas used for NO generation and for scrubbing output gases prior to patient inhalation. The system can utilize an oxygen concentrator to increase nitric oxide production and compliment oxygen generator activity as an independent device. The system can also include a high voltage electrode assembly that is easily assembled and installed. Various nitric oxide delivery methods are provided, including the use of a nasal cannula.

Claims (29)

1. A disposable cartridge for use in an electric nitric oxide (NO) generation system, the disposable cartridge comprising:

one or more reactant gas flow paths configured to prepare a reactant gas to be used to generate NO, each of the one or more reactant gas flow paths comprising at least one filter configured to remove particulate from the reactant gas;

one or more product gas flow paths configured to prepare a product gas generated from the reactant gas and containing NO for delivery to a patient, each of the one or more product gas flow paths comprising at least one scrubber configured to remove NO 2 from the product gas and at least one filter configured to remove particulate from the product gas; and

at least one product gas outlet pneumatic connection configured to removably couple the one or more product gas flow paths in the disposable cartridge to an NO generator of the NO generation system.

2. The disposable cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the reactant gas flow path further comprises at least one scrubber configured to remove organic compounds from the reactant gas.

3. The disposable cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising at least one reactant gas pneumatic connection configured to removably couple the one or more reactant gas flow paths in the disposable cartridge to the NO generator to deliver the reactant gas to the NO generator.

4. The disposable cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising at least one product gas inlet pneumatic connection configured to removably couple the one or more product gas flow paths in the disposable cartridge to the NO generator to receive the product gas from the NO generator.

5. The disposable cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the product gas flow path is configured to direct the product gas to a delivery device coupled to a patient.

6. A nitric oxide (NO) system, comprising:

a disposable cartridge for use with a NO generator configured to ionize a reactant gas into a product gas containing NO, the disposable cartridge comprising:

one or more reactant gas flow paths configured to prepare a reactant gas to be used to generate NO, the reactant gas flow path comprising at least one filter configured to remove particulate from the reactant gas;

one or more product gas flow paths configured to prepare a product gas generated from the reactant gas and containing NO for delivery to a patient, the product gas flow path comprising at least one scrubber configured to remove NO 2 from the product gas and at least one filter configured to remove particulate from the product gas;

at least one reactant gas pneumatic connection configured to removably couple the one or more reactant gas flow paths in the disposable cartridge to the NO generator to deliver the reactant gas to the NO generator;

at least one product gas inlet pneumatic connection configured to removably couple the one or more product gas flow paths in the disposable cartridge to the NO generator to receive the product gas from the NO generator; and

at least one product gas outlet pneumatic connection configured to removably couple the one or more product gas flow paths in the disposable cartridge to the NO generator.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the reactant gas flow path further comprises at least one scrubber configured to remove organic compounds from the reactant gas.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the product gas flow path is configured to direct the product gas to a delivery device to a patient.

9. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a controller configured to communicate with the NO generator to regulate an amount of nitric oxide provided from the NO generator using one or more parameters as an input to the controller.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the parameters relate to one or more of a prescribed dose of NO assigned to a patient, delivery method type, time of day, patient condition, tidal volume, physiologic NO half-life, estimated entrainment fraction, inspired O 2 concentration, recent historical dose information, NO oxidation rate, target NO concentration in a lung, patient activity, patient oxygenation, barometric pressure, temperature, patient feedback, physician input, patient respiration rate, patient height, patient ideal body weight, patient current body weight, patient NO boost request, plasma chamber pressure, product gas pressure, NO product gas concentration, and product gas flow rate.

11. A method of filtering and scrubbing a gas, comprising:

preparing a reactant gas to be used to generate nitric oxide (NO) by an NO generator using one or more reactant gas flow paths in a disposable cartridge, the reactant gas flow path including at least one scrubber configured to remove organic compounds from the reactant gas and at least one filter configured to remove particulate from the reactant gas;

delivering, through at least one reactant gas pneumatic connection, the reactant gas from the one or more reactant gas flow paths in the disposable cartridge to the NO generator;

ionizing the reactant gas, using the NO generator, to generate a product gas containing NO;

delivering, through at least one product gas pneumatic connection, the product gas from the NO generator to one or more outlet flow paths in the disposable cartridge, the at least one product gas pneumatic connection being configured to removably couple the one or more outlet flow paths in the disposable cartridge to the NO generator; and

preparing the product gas to be delivered using the one or more product gas flow paths in the disposable cartridge, the product gas flow path including at least one scrubber configured to remove NO 2 from the product gas and at least one filter configured to remove particulate from the product gas.

12. The method of claim 11 , where in the product gas is prepared to be delivered to a patient.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising controlling, using a controller, an amount of nitric oxide generated by the NO generator using one or more parameters as an input to the controller.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the controller electrically communicates with the NO generator.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the parameters relate to one or more of a prescribed dose of NO assigned to a patient, delivery method type, time of day, patient condition, tidal volume, physiologic NO half-life, estimated entrainment fraction, inspired O 2 concentration, recent historical dose information, NO oxidation rate, target NO concentration in a lung, patient activity, patient oxygenation, barometric pressure, temperature, patient feedback, physician input, patient respiration rate, patient height, patient ideal body weight, patient current body weight, and patient NO boost request, plasma chamber pressure, product gas pressure, NO product gas concentration, and product gas flow rate.
