Abstract

Methods, media, and systems are provided for restricting an uplink Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) assignment based on fading, battery data, or location data associated with a user device in an mmWave system. Fading data, location data, or battery data is received from one or more user devices. Based on the received data, a determination is made using the data received (e.g., determining the battery data of the user device is below a threshold or determining the location of the user device). In response, the assignment of the user device to an uplink MIMO layer of available MIMO layers is restricted. The restricted uplink MIMO layer is a higher MIMO layer than another MIMO layer of the available MIMO layers. In response to restricting the assignment, the user device may be assigned to an available MIMO layer that is a lower MIMO layer than the restricted MIMO layer.

Claims (31)

1. A system for restricting an uplink Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) assignment, the system comprising:

one or more nodes, each of the one or more nodes configured to wirelessly communicate with one or more user devices via at least one millimeter wave (mmWave) in a geographic service area; and

one or more processors configured to perform operations comprising:

receiving fading data from a user device;

based on the fading data, determining that a fading level of the user device satisfies a threshold; and

in response to determining that the fading level of the user device satisfies the threshold, restricting assignment of the user device to a MIMO layer of available MIMO layers.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fading data comprises a signal echo time delay based on a received echo response message.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein satisfaction of the threshold is further determined based on receiving fading measurements from another device utilizing an mmWave fading measurement model.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein satisfaction of the threshold is further determined based on a distance between an mmWave node of the one or more nodes and the user device.

5. The system of claim 1 , the operations further comprising assigning the user device to one of the available MIMO layers.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the one of the available MIMO layers is a lower MIMO layer than the MIMO layer being restricted.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the lower MIMO layer is a 2×2 MIMO layer and the one of the available MIMO layers is a 4×4 MIMO layer.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein satisfaction of the threshold is further determined based on a small-scale fading coefficient.

9. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media having computer-executable instructions embodied thereon that, when executed, perform a method for restricting an uplink Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) assignment, the method comprising:

receiving fading data from a plurality of user devices located within a portion of a geographic service area provided by a cell site having at least one node configured to wirelessly communicate with at least one of the plurality of user devices via at least one millimeter wave (mmWave);

determining the portion of the geographic service area satisfies a threshold level of fading based on the fading data; and

based on determining the portion of the geographic service area satisfies a threshold, restricting assignment of the plurality of user devices to a MIMO layer of available MIMO layers.

10. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 9 , further comprising assigning the plurality of user devices to one of the available MIMO layers, the one of the available MIMO layers being a lower MIMO layer than the MIMO layer being restricted.

11. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 9 , wherein satisfaction of the threshold is further determined based on an input and output power capability of each of the plurality of user devices.

12. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 9 , wherein the portion of the geographic service area is identified by using location data of the plurality of user devices.

13. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 9 , wherein satisfaction of the threshold is further determined based on large-scale fading coefficients.

14. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 9 , wherein satisfaction of the threshold is further determined based on Reference Signal Received Power fluctuation measurements received from the plurality of user devices over a period of time.

15. A method for assigning an uplink Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) assignment, the method comprising:

receiving fading data from a user device associated with a cell site configured to wirelessly communicate with the user device via at least one millimeter wave (mmWave);

based on the fading data, determining that the fading data does not satisfy a threshold; and

in response to determining that the fading data of the user device does not satisfy the threshold, assigning the user device to a MIMO layer of available MIMO layers.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the MIMO layer that the user device is assigned to is a higher MIMO layer than the available MIMO layers comprising at least the higher MIMO layer and a lower MIMO layer.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the fading data comprises a fading amplitude and first-order fading statistic values.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the determination that the fading data does not satisfy the threshold is based on applying a Rayleigh model to mmWave fading data.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the determination is further based on a maximum Doppler frequency.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the determination is further based on fading data of mm Waves transmitted by an indoor 5G small cell in communication with the cell site and the user device.
