Abstract

Techniques are disclosed for initiating transient sessions on a communal device. An example method includes a device detecting a user device within a threshold distance of the device. The device can transmit control instructions to the user device for a response from the user device based on the detection, the response comprising an indication as to whether to initiate a transient session of a streaming service. The device can transmit, to an application server, a request for a transient session token based on the response from the user device. The device can receive, from the application server, the transient session token, the transient session token including an expiration parameter. The device can initiate the transient session based on the transient session token, the transient session comprising presenting content provided by the application server on a presentation device. The device can terminate the transient session based on the expiration parameter.

initiating, by the computing device, the transient session based at least in part on the transient session token, the transient session comprising presenting content provided by the application server on a presentation device; and

terminating, by the computing device, the transient session based at least in part on the expiration parameter.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises relaying messages between the user device and the application server to authenticate an account with the streaming service and without providing user identifying information.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the user device is within the threshold distance of the computing device comprises:

transmitting a first signal to the user device;

determining a distance of the user device from the computing device based at least in part on a timing of the transmission of the first signal;

comparing the distance to the threshold distance; and

determining that the user device is within the threshold distance based at least in part on the comparison.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the user device is associated with a first user, and the computing device and the presentation device are associated with a second user.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the transient session comprises access to streaming service content and limited access to user account information.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the expiration parameter is an expiration time or a location-based indication that an account holder associated with the user device desires the transient session to expire prior to the expiration time.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the expiration parameter comprises a distance between the user device and the computing device, and wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a location of the user device; and

calculating the distance between the user device and the computing device; and

termination the transient session based at least in part on the distance being greater than a threshold distance.

8. A computing device, comprising:

a processor; and

a computer-readable medium including instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

detecting a user device within a threshold distance of the computing device;

transmitting control instructions to the user device for a response from the user device based at least in part on the detection, the response comprising an indication as to whether to initiate a transient session of a streaming service;

transmitting, to an application server of a steaming service, a request for a transient session token based at least in part on receiving the response from the user device;

receiving, from the application server of the streaming service, the transient session token, the transient session token including an expiration parameter;

initiating the transient session based at least in part on the transient session token, the transient session comprising presenting content provided by the application server on a presentation device; and

terminating the transient session based at least in part on the expiration parameter.

9. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to perform operations comprising relaying messages between the user device and the application server to authenticate an account with the streaming service and without providing user identifying information.

10. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein detecting the user device is within the threshold distance of the computing device comprises:

transmitting a first signal to the user device;

determining a distance of the user device from the computing device based at least in part on a timing of the transmission of the first signal;

comparing the distance to the threshold distance; and

determining that the user device is within the threshold distance based at least in part on the comparison.

11. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the user device is associated with a first user and the computing device is associated with a second user.

12. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the transient session comprises access to streaming service content and limited access to user account information.

13. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the expiration parameter is an expiration time or a location-based indication from a user device to terminate the transient session.

14. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the expiration parameter comprises a distance between the user device and the computing device, and wherein the instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a location of the user device; and

calculating the distance between the user device and the computing device; and

termination the transient session based at least in part on the distance being greater than a threshold distance.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon a sequence of instructions which, when executed, causes a processor to perform operations comprising:

detecting a user device within a threshold distance of a computing device;

transmitting control instructions to the user device for a response from the user device based at least in part on the detection, the response comprising an indication as to whether to initiate a transient session of a streaming service;

transmitting, to an application server of a steaming service, a request for a transient session token based at least in part on receiving the response from the user device;

receiving, from the application server of the streaming service, the transient session token, the transient session token including an expiration parameter;

initiating the transient session based at least in part on the transient session token, the transient session comprising presenting content provided by the application server on a presentation device; and
