Abstract

Systems for self-organizing data collection in an industrial environment are disclosed. An example system may include a self-propelled mobile data collector for handling a plurality of sensor inputs from sensors in the industrial environment, wherein the plurality of sensor inputs is configured to sense at least one of: an operational mode, a fault mode, a maintenance mode, or a health status of at least one target system. The system may include a self-organizing system for self-organizing at least one of a storage operation of the data, a data collection operation of the sensors, or a selection operation of the plurality of sensor inputs. The self-organizing system organizes a swarm of self-propelled mobile data collectors to collect data from a plurality of target systems in the industrial environment.

Claims (95)

1. A system for self-organizing data collection in an industrial environment, the system comprising:

at least one mobile data collector for handling a plurality of sensor inputs from sensors in the industrial environment, wherein the plurality of sensor inputs is configured to sense at least one of: an operational mode, a fault mode, a maintenance mode, or a health status of at least one target system; and

a self-organizing system for self-organizing at least one of: (i) a storage operation of data, (ii) a data collection operation of the sensors that provide the plurality of sensor inputs, or (iii) a selection operation of the plurality of sensor inputs,

wherein the self-organizing system organizes a swarm of mobile data collectors to collect data from a plurality of target systems in the industrial environment,

wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm of mobile data collectors by determining at least one of a location or a position of a portion of the mobile data collectors,

wherein the determined location or the determined position of the portion of the mobile data collectors includes the location or the position of the portion of the mobile data collectors relative to at least one of: each other, a location where network availability is favorable, or a point of data acquisition,

wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm based on the determined location or the determined position,

wherein at least a portion of the mobile data collectors are configured with intelligence to provide coordination with other mobile data collectors of the swarm,

wherein the coordination includes tracking information about what data the other mobile data collectors are handling to thereby intelligently allocate data activities across the swarm; and

wherein the swarm of mobile data collectors includes the at least one mobile data collector.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one mobile data collector is structured to receive a portion of the plurality of sensor inputs while moving between multiple locations in proximity to an observed component of the at least one target system.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one mobile data collector is at least one of:

a mobile robot;

a drone; or

a mobile submersible.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm of mobile data collectors by determining the location and the position of each of the swarm of mobile data collectors.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one target system is a least one of: a hauling system, a lifting system, a drilling system, a mining system, a digging system, a boring system, a material handling system, a conveyor system, a pipeline system, a wastewater treatment system, or a fluid pumping system.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the industrial environment comprises an energy source extraction environment.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the determined location or the determined position includes the position of the portion of the mobile data collectors relative to each other.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the self-organizing system further organizes the swarm of the mobile data collectors by routing movement of the location or the position of at least one of the mobile data collectors.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the mobile data collectors includes all of the mobile data collectors.

10. A system for self-organizing data collection in an industrial environment, the system comprising:

at least one mobile data collector for handling a plurality of sensor inputs from sensors in the industrial environment, wherein the plurality of sensor inputs is configured to sense at least one of: an operational mode, a fault mode, a maintenance mode, or a health status of at least one target system; and

a self-organizing system for self-organizing at least one of: (i) a storage operation of data, (ii) a data collection operation of the sensors that provide the plurality of sensor inputs, or (iii) a selection operation of the plurality of sensor inputs,

wherein the self-organizing system organizes a swarm of mobile data collectors to collect data from a plurality of target systems in the industrial environment,

wherein at least a portion of the mobile data collectors are configured with intelligence to provide coordination with other mobile data collectors of the swarm,

wherein the coordination includes tracking data handled by the other mobile data collectors of the swarm to thereby intelligently allocate data activities across the swarm, and

wherein the swarm of mobile data collectors includes the at least one mobile data collector.

The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one target system is at least one of: a hauling system, a lifting system, a drilling system, a mining system, a digging system, a boring system, a material handling system, a conveyor system, a pipeline system, a wastewater treatment system, or a fluid pumping system.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one mobile data collector is structured to receive a portion of the plurality of sensor inputs by moving to multiple locations.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm of mobile data collectors by determining a location and a position of each of the swarm of mobile data collectors.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the data activities include at least one of: data collection, data storage, data processing, or data publishing.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the coordination includes providing a parameter including at least one of: a condition of the industrial environment, a capability of one or more mobile data collectors of the swarm, an operating parameter, a rule that governs operation of the swarm, or a current condition of the one or more mobile data collectors of the swarm.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein, using machine learning, the self-organizing system generates and optimizes a storage specification for organizing storage of the data, and wherein the optimized storage specification specifies data for local storage in the industrial environment and specifies data for streaming via a network connection from the industrial environment.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the storage specification specifies data for the local storage using a plurality of memory devices of the swarm of mobile data collectors.

18. A computer-implemented method for self-organizing data collection in an industrial environment, the method comprising:

operating a mobile data collector of a swarm of mobile data collectors;

handling, with the mobile data collector, a plurality of sensor inputs from sensors in the industrial environment;

sensing, with the plurality of sensor inputs, at least one of: an operational mode, a fault mode, a maintenance mode, or a health status of at least one target system of the industrial environment;

self-organizing, with a self-organizing system, at least one of: (i) a storage operation of data, (ii) a data collection operation of the sensors that provide the plurality of sensor inputs, or (iii) a selection operation of the plurality of sensor inputs; and

organizing, with the self-organizing system, the swarm of mobile data collectors to collect data from a plurality of target systems in the industrial environment,

wherein at least a portion of the mobile data collectors are configured with intelligence to provide coordination with other mobile data collectors of the swarm, and

wherein the coordination includes tracking information about what data the other mobile data collectors are handling to thereby intelligently allocate data activities across the swarm.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the mobile data collector is structured to receive a portion of the plurality of sensor inputs by moving to multiple locations.

20. The method of claim 18 , further comprising generating, with the self-organizing system, a storage specification for organizing storage of the data, wherein the storage specification specifies data for local storage using an aggregated plurality of memory devices of the swarm of mobile data collectors.

21. The method of claim 18 , further comprising adapting, with the self-organizing system, the swarm in response to an anticipated state of the industrial environment.

22. The method of claim 18 , wherein the industrial environment comprises at least one of: a coal mining environment; a metal mining environment; a mineral mining environment; or an oil drilling environment.

23. The method of claim 18 , wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm based on at least one of a hierarchical organization or a collaborative organization of the mobile data collectors.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm based on the hierarchical organization, and the hierarchical organization includes a master mobile data collector of the mobile data collectors that organizes and directs activities of one or more subservient ones of the mobile data collectors.

25. The method of claim 23 , wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm based on the collaborative organization, and the collaborative organization includes distributed decision-making for the swarm among the mobile data collectors.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein the distributed decision-making includes a model for decision-making including at least one of a voting system, a points system, a least-cost routing system, or a prioritization system.

27. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

to organize the swarm, the self-organizing system utilizing a machine learning algorithm to determine a respective target system of the plurality of target systems for at least some of the mobile data collectors; and

the machine learning algorithm utilizing one or more features to determine the respective target system,

wherein the one or more features include at least one of: a battery life of one or more of the mobile data collectors, a type of one or more of the plurality of target systems to be sensed, a size of the respective target system, a type of signal to be sensed, a number of the mobile data collectors needed to cover the respective target system, a number of data points needed for the respective target system, a success in a prior signal capture, information received from a headquarters or other component from which instructions are received, or historical information regarding sensors operated at the respective target system.

28. The method of claim 18 , wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm by at least one of:

receiving confirmation that there is no contention between the mobile data collectors for at least one of the plurality of target systems,

determining a new target system based on at least one other one of the mobile data collectors being at or moving to at least one of the plurality of target systems,

determining a type of sensor to operate the at least one of the plurality of target systems,

determining that at least one of the mobile data collectors operates the type of sensor, or

directing at least one of the mobile data collectors that operates the type of sensor to at least one of the plurality of target systems.

The method of claim 18 , wherein the coordination takes into account a parameter including at least one of: a condition of the industrial environment, a capability of one or more mobile data collectors of the swarm, an operating parameter, a rule that governs operation of the swarm, or a current condition of the one or more mobile data collectors of the swarm.

30. The method of claim 18 ,

wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm of mobile data collectors by determining at least one of a location or a position of a portion of the mobile data collectors,

wherein the determined location or the determined position of the portion of the mobile data collectors includes the location or the position of the portion of the mobile data collectors relative to at least one of: each other, a location where network availability is favorable, or a point of data acquisition, and

wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm based on the determined location or the determined position.

31. A computer-implemented method for self-organizing data collection in an industrial environment, the method comprising:

operating a mobile data collector of a swarm of mobile data collectors;

handling, with the mobile data collector, a plurality of sensor inputs from sensors in the industrial environment;

sensing, with the plurality of sensor inputs, at least one of: an operational mode, a fault mode, a maintenance mode, or a health status of at least one target system of the industrial environment;

self-organizing, with a self-organizing system, at least one of: (i) a storage operation of data, (ii) a data collection operation of the sensors that provide the plurality of sensor inputs, or (iii) a selection operation of the plurality of sensor inputs;

organizing the swarm, with the self-organizing system, by utilizing a machine learning algorithm to determine a respective target system of the at least one target system for at least some of the mobile data collectors; and

utilizing, by the machine learning algorithm, one or more features to determine the respective target system.

The method of claim 31 , wherein the one or more features include at least one of: a battery life of one or more of the mobile data collectors, a type of the at least one target system to be sensed, a size of the respective target system, a type of signal to be sensed, a number of the mobile data collectors needed to cover the respective target system, a number of data points needed for the respective target system, a success in a prior signal capture, information received from a headquarters or other component from which instructions are received, or historical information regarding sensors operated at the respective target system.

33. The method of claim 31 , wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm based on at least one of a hierarchical organization or a collaborative organization of the mobile data collectors.

34. The method of claim 33 , wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm based on the hierarchical organization, and the hierarchical organization includes a master mobile data collector of the mobile data collectors that organizes and directs activities of one or more subservient ones of the mobile data collectors.

35. The method of claim 33 , wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm based on the collaborative organization, and the collaborative organization includes distributed decision-making for the swarm among the mobile data collectors.

36. A system for self-organizing data collection in an industrial environment, the system comprising:

at least one mobile data collector for handling a plurality of sensor inputs from sensors in the industrial environment, wherein the plurality of sensor inputs is configured to sense at least one of: an operational mode, a fault mode, a maintenance mode, or a health status of at least one target system; and

a self-organizing system for self-organizing at least one of: (i) a storage operation of data, (ii) a data collection operation of the sensors that provide the plurality of sensor inputs, or (iii) a selection operation of the plurality of sensor inputs,

wherein the self-organizing system organizes a swarm of mobile data collectors to collect data from a plurality of target systems in the industrial environment, to organize the swarm,

wherein the self-organizing system utilizes a machine learning algorithm to determine a respective target system of the plurality of target systems for at least some of the mobile data collectors; and

wherein the machine learning algorithm utilizes one or more features to determine the respective target system.

37. The system of claim 36 , wherein the one or more features include at least one of: a battery life of one or more of the mobile data collectors, a type of one or more of the plurality of target systems to be sensed, a size of the respective target system, a type of signal to be sensed, a number of the mobile data collectors needed to cover the respective target system, a number of data points needed for the respective target system, a success in a prior signal capture, information received from a headquarters or other component from which instructions are received, or historical information regarding sensors operated at the respective target system.

38. The system of claim 36 :

wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm of mobile data collectors by determining at least one of a location or a position of a portion of the mobile data collectors,

wherein the determined location or the determined position of the portion of the mobile data collectors includes the location or the position of the portion of the mobile data collectors relative to at least one of: each other, a location where network availability is favorable, or a point of data acquisition, and

wherein the self-organizing system organizes the swarm based on the determined location or the determined position.

39. The system of claim 38 ,

wherein the at least one target system comprises a plurality of industrial system components disposed in the industrial environment, and the plurality of industrial system components is structured to contribute, in part, to processing of an object, and

wherein the self-organizing system self-organizes the swarm of mobile data collectors to collect data from the plurality of industrial system components.

40. The system of claim 39 , wherein the self-organizing system self-organizes the selection operation, and wherein the selection operation is structured to identify a target signal of at least one of the plurality of industrial system components to be sensed.

41. The system of claim 36 ,

wherein at least a portion of the mobile data collectors are configured with intelligence to provide coordination with other mobile data collectors of the swarm, and

wherein the swarm of mobile data collectors includes the at least one mobile data collector.
