Abstract

A connector assembly for attaching a tracker body to a tracker support arm. The connector assembly includes a receiver coupled to the tracker body and defining a cavity. The connector assembly includes a key coupled to the tracker support arm and including a loading surface. The key is insertable into the cavity of the receiver. The connector assembly includes a preloading mechanism operably attached to the receiver and including a load member disposed in the receiver. The load member is arranged to contact the loading surface of the key to constrain the key to the receiver, and to thereby attach the tracker body to the tracker support arm.

Claims (44)

1 . A surgical tracker assembly comprising:

a tracker body comprising a plurality of tracking elements;

a tracker support arm;

a receiver coupled to the tracker body and defining a cavity;

a key coupled to the tracker support arm and including a loading surface and being configured to be inserted into the cavity of the receiver; and

a preloading mechanism operably attached to the receiver and including a load member disposed in the receiver and arranged to contact the loading surface of the key to constrain the key to the receiver, the preloading mechanism comprising:

a shaft extending through the receiver and comprising a first end and a second end;

a push-button disposed at the first end of the shaft; and

the load member disposed at the second end of the shaft.

2 . The surgical tracker assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the cavity of the receiver extends along a first axis; and

the shaft of the preloading mechanism extends along a second axis that is substantially perpendicular to the first axis.

3 . The surgical tracker assembly of claim 1 , wherein the preloading mechanism comprises a biasing device coupled between the receiver and the push-button.

4 . The surgical tracker assembly of claim 3 , wherein the biasing device comprises a spring that is disposed about the shaft.

5 . The surgical tracker assembly of claim 3 , wherein, absent presence of the key within the cavity of the receiver, the biasing device is configured to bias the load member to a clamped position whereby the load member is present within the cavity of the receiver, and wherein the push-button is in a first button position when the load member is in the clamped position.

6 . The surgical tracker assembly of claim 5 , wherein the push-button is configured to be pressed to move, against a bias of the biasing device, from the first button position to a second button position to thereby move the load member from the clamped position to an unclamped position whereby the load member exits the cavity of the receiver to provide passage for insertion of the key.

7 . The surgical tracker assembly of claim 6 , wherein:

the key is configured to be inserted into the cavity of the receiver when the load member is in the unclamped position; and

the push-button is configured to be released to move, pursuant to the bias of the biasing device, from the second button position towards the first button position such that the load member moves from the unclamped position towards the clamped position and such that the load member enters the cavity to contact the loading surface of the key and to constrain the key to the receiver.

8 . The surgical tracker assembly of claim 1 , wherein the key comprises a post defining an axis and the loading surface of the key is obliquely angled with respect to the axis of the post.

9 . The surgical tracker assembly of claim 8 , wherein the load member comprises a tapered segment being configured to contact the obliquely angled loading surface of the key to constrain the key to the receiver.

10 . A connector assembly in a surgical tracker assembly comprising:

a receiver defining a cavity;

a key including a loading surface and being configured to be inserted into the cavity of the receiver; and

a preloading mechanism operably attached to the receiver and including a load member disposed in the receiver and arranged to contact the loading surface of the key to constrain the key to the receiver;

wherein the preloading mechanism comprises a shaft extending through the receiver and comprising a first end and a second end, a push-button disposed at the first end of the shaft, the load member disposed at the second end of the shaft.

11 . The connector assembly of claim 10 , wherein:

the cavity of the receiver extends along a first axis; and

the shaft of the preloading mechanism extends along a second axis that is substantially perpendicular to the first axis.

12 . The connector assembly of claim 10 , wherein the preloading mechanism comprises a biasing device coupled between the receiver and the push-button.

13 . The connector assembly of claim 12 , wherein the biasing device comprises a spring that is disposed about the shaft.

14 . The connector assembly of claim 12 , wherein, absent presence of the key within the cavity of the receiver, the biasing device is configured to bias the load member to a clamped position whereby the load member is present within the cavity of the receiver, and wherein the push-button is in a first button position when the load member is in the clamped position.

15 . The connector assembly of claim 14 , wherein the push-button is configured to be pressed to move, against a bias of the biasing device, from the first button position to a second button position to thereby move the load member from the clamped position to an unclamped position whereby the load member exits the cavity of the receiver to provide passage for insertion of the key.

16 . The connector assembly of claim 15 , wherein:

the key is configured to be inserted into the cavity of the receiver when the load member is in the unclamped position; and

the push-button is configured to be released to move, pursuant to the bias of the biasing device, from the second button position towards the first button position such that the load member moves from the unclamped position towards the clamped position and such that the load member enters the cavity to contact the loading surface of the key and to constrain the key to the receiver.

17 . The connector assembly of claim 10 , wherein:

the key comprises a post defining an axis and the loading surface of the key is obliquely angled with respect to the axis of the post; and

the load member comprises a tapered segment being configured to contact the obliquely angled loading surface of the key to constrain the key to the receiver.

18 . A method of attaching a tracker body to a tracker support arm utilizing a connector assembly, the connector assembly comprising a key coupled to the tracker support arm and including a loading surface, a receiver coupled to the tracker body and defining a cavity, and a preloading mechanism operably attached to the receiver, the preloading mechanism comprising a shaft extending through the receiver, a push-button disposed at a first end of the shaft, a load member disposed at a second end of the shaft and being disposed in the receiver, and a biasing device coupled between the receiver and the push-button, the method comprising:

absent presence of the key within the cavity of the receiver, biasing, with the biasing device, the load member to a clamped position for positioning the load member within the cavity of the receiver, and whereby the push-button is in a first button position when the load member is in the clamped position;

pressing the push-button, against a bias of the biasing device, for moving the push-button from the first button position to a second button position and for concurrently moving the load member from the clamped position to an unclamped position whereby the load member exits the cavity of the receiver for providing passage for insertion of the key;

inserting the key into the cavity of the receiver when the load member is in the unclamped position; and

after inserting the key, releasing the push-button for moving the push-button, pursuant to the bias of the biasing device, from the second button position towards the first button position and for concurrently moving the load member from the unclamped position towards the clamped position whereby the load member re-enters the cavity for contacting the loading surface of the key and for constraining the key to the receiver to thereby attach the tracker body to the tracker support arm.
