Abstract

A method of surgical stapling that uses a surgical instrument operable to compress, staple, and cut tissue. The instrument includes a body, a shaft, and an end effector with a pair of jaws. A placement tip extends distally from one of the jaws of the end effector. The method includes positioning the end effector at a desired site for surgical stapling. The method also includes controlling one or more of the jaws of the end effector to place the end effector in an open position. The method also includes positioning the end effector such that tissue is located between the jaws. The method also includes clamping the tissue between the jaws by moving at least one of the jaws toward the other jaw. The method also includes advancing a firing beam of the apparatus from a proximal position to a distal position.

Claims (33)

1. An apparatus comprising:

(a) a first jaw having a plurality of staple apertures that house a plurality of staples;

(b) a second jaw having a plurality of staple forming pockets configured to form the staples, wherein the first and second jaws are configured to transition from an open state to a closed state to clamp and staple tissue with the staples;

(c) a tip coupled with one of the first and second jaws such that a proximal end of the tip is longitudinally constrained relative to the selected jaw, the tip comprising a body extending from the proximal end to a distal end; and

wherein the distal end is moveable, via the application of an external force, from a first position, where the distal end is positioned at a first angle relative to the one of the first and second jaws such that the body is nominally parallel to a distal end of the other of the first and second jaws, to a second position, where the distal end is positioned at a second angle different from the first angle, relative to the one of the first and second jaws and wherein the body is spaced apart from a distal end of the other of the first and second jaws when the body is in either of the first and second positions, and wherein the distal end maintains the second position after the application of the external force ceases.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the distal end is moveable about a range of angles relative to the one of the first and second jaws, including the first and second angles.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the range of angles is limited by the other of the first and second jaws.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the external force is applied by a user of the apparatus.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the external force is applied by the other of the first and second jaws as the first and second jaws are transitioned from the open to the closed state.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body is elastically deformable.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body is malleable.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end of the body is affixed to a distal end of the one of the first and second jaws.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the distal end is movable about an intermediate portion of the body distal to the proximal end and proximal to the distal end.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the intermediate portion is distal to a distal end of the other of the first and second jaws.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second positions is configured for marching the first and second jaws through tissue and the other of the first and second positions is configured for gathering tissue between the first and second jaws the first and second jaws are transitioned between from the open state to the closed state.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second positions is configured for visualizing a distal end of one of the first and second jaws.

13. A surgical instrument comprising a handle, a shaft having a proximal end coupled with handle and a distal end coupled with an end effector, the end effector comprising:

(a) a first jaw configured to receive a staple cartridge having staples disposed therein;

(b) a second jaw comprising an anvil including a plurality of staple forming pockets configured to form the staples, wherein the first and second jaws are pivotably coupled at a proximal end so as to be capable of transitioning between an open state and a closed state to clamp and staple tissue with the staples;

(c) a tip coupled with the second jaw such that a proximal end of the tip is longitudinally constrained relative to the second jaw, the tip comprising a body extending from the proximal end to a distal end; and

wherein the distal end is moveable, via the application of an external force, from a first position, where the distal end is positioned at a first angle relative to the second jaw such that the body is nominally parallel to a distal end of the other of the first jaw, to a second position, where the distal end is positioned at a second angle different from the first angle, relative to the second jaw and wherein the body is spaced apart from a distal end of the other of the first and second jaws when the body is in either of the first and second positions, and wherein the distal end maintains the second position after the application of the external force ceases.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the distal end is moveable about a range of angles relative to the second jaw, including the first and second angles.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein the range of angles is limited by the other of the first and second jaws.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the external force is applied by the other of the first and second jaws as the first and second jaws are transitioned from the open to the closed state.

17. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the body is elastically deformable.

18. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the body is malleable.

19. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the distal end is movable about an intermediate portion of the body distal to the proximal end and proximal to the distal end, the intermediate portion being distal to a distal end of the other of the first and second jaws.

20. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein one of the first and second positions is configured for marching the first and second jaws through tissue and the other of the first and second positions is configured for gathering tissue between the first and second jaws the first and second jaws are transitioned between from the open state to the closed state.

21. An end effector for use with a handle or robotic am, the end effector comprising:

(a) a first jaw configured to receive a staple cartridge having staples disposed therein;

(b) a second jaw comprising an anvil including a plurality of staple forming pockets configured to form the staples, wherein the first and second jaws are pivotably coupled at a proximal end so as to be capable of transitioning between an open state and a closed state to clamp and staple tissue with the staples;

(c) a tip coupled with the second jaw such that a proximal end of the tip is longitudinally constrained relative to the second jaw, the tip comprising a body extending from the proximal end to a distal end; and

wherein the distal end is moveable via the application of an external force about a range of angles relative to the second jaw, including a first angle relative to the second jaw and a second angle, different from the first angle, relative to the second jaw, the distal end maintaining the position after the application of the external force ceases and wherein one of the first and second positions is configured for marching the first and second jaws through tissue and the other of the first and second positions is configured for gathering tissue between the first and second jaws the first and second jaws are transitioned between from the open state to the closed state.
