Abstract

Methods and systems for identifying and determining the size and orientation of a reamed portion of a patient's bone are disclosed. A tracking array and/or point probe may be inserted into an adapter device. The adapter device comprising a plurality of openings, having various connection means therein, such that when the tracking array is inserted into the adapter, a secure and robust connection is created. A reamer, stem, or similar tool may then be inserted into the opposing side of the adapter, during which, a secure and robust connection is created between the adapter and the tool. Thus, through the use of Computer Assisted Surgery Systems, a more accurate representation of the patient's anatomy can be obtained.

Claims (39)

1. A method of accommodating for an offset based on registration of a patient's intramedullary canal comprising:

obtaining, using a surgical navigation system, a surgical plan comprising femoral implant orientation data associated with a femoral implant;

reaming, using a reaming device attached to a surgical tool, a femur bone;

implanting an intramedullary stem component into the intramedullary canal of the femur bone, wherein the intramedullary stem component is configured to couple to the femoral implant;

obtaining, using the surgical navigation system, locational data associated with at least one of the reaming device or the intramedullary stem component, wherein the locational data is obtained after reaming the femur bone;

identifying, based on the locational data and the surgical plan, an offset factor, wherein the offset factor comprises a difference in alignment between the locational data and the femoral implant orientation data;

optimizing, an offset device comprising an elongated first end portion and an opposite elongated second end portion, wherein an axis of elongation of the first end portion is offset from an axis of elongation of the second end portion in order to adjust an alignment of the femoral implant by the offset factor relative to the locational data, and wherein the offset device is configured to be at least partially implantable within the intramedullary canal of the femur bone; and

implanting, using the offset device, the femoral implant.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the locational data comprises:

coupling at least one tracking array to the reaming device;

obtaining the location of the at least one tracking array; and

determining, based on the location of the at least one tracking array, the locational data associated with the reaming device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein coupling at least one tracking array comprises coupling, using a coupling device, the at least one tracking array to the reaming device.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the coupling device comprises a quick connect mechanism.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the at least one tracking array comprises a point probe.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein obtaining the locational data comprises:

coupling a surgical tool to the reaming device, wherein at least one tracking array is affixed to the surgical tool,

obtaining the location of the at least one tracking array, and

determining, based on the location of the at least one tracking array, the locational data associated with the reaming device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the offset factor is selected from the group consisting of an offset distance and an offset angle.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein implanting, using the offset device, the femoral implant comprises:

attaching the offset device to the femoral implant; and adjusting the offset device based on the offset factor.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the offset device is patient-specific.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the locational data comprises:

coupling at least one tracking array to the intramedullary stem component;

obtaining the location of the at least one tracking array; and

determining, based on the location of the at least one tracking array, the locational data associated with the intramedullary stem component.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein coupling at least one tracking array comprises coupling, using a coupling device, the at least one tracking array to the intramedullary stem component.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the coupling device comprises a quick connect mechanism.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the intramedullary stem component is a trial stem.

14. A method for registration of a patient's intramedullary canal of a femur bone comprising:

obtaining, using a surgical navigation system, a surgical plan comprising femoral implant orientation data associated with a femoral implant;

implanting an intramedullary stem component into the intramedullary canal of the femur bone, wherein the intramedullary stem component is configured to couple to the femoral implant;

obtaining, using the surgical navigation system, locational data associated with at least one of the reaming device or the intramedullary stem component, wherein the locational data is obtained after reaming the femur bone, and wherein obtaining the locational data comprises:

obtaining the location of the at least one tracking array, wherein the at least one tracking array is coupled to at least one of the reaming device or the intramedullary stem component; and

determining, based, on the location of the at least one tracking array, the locational data associated with at least one of the reaming device or intramedullary stem component;

identifying, based on the locational data and the surgical plan, an offset factor, wherein the offset factor comprises a difference in alignment between the locational data and the femoral implant orientation data;

optimizing, an offset device comprising an elongated first end portion and an opposite elongated second end portion, wherein an axis of elongation of the first end portion is offset from an axis of elongation of the second end portion in order to adjust an alignment of the femoral implant by the offset factor relative to the locational data, and wherein the offset device is configured to be at least partially implantable within the intramedullary canal of the femur bone; and

implanting, using the offset device, the femoral implant.
