Abstract

A method, software, database, and system in which a query attribute is used as the basis for accessing stored attribute combinations and their frequencies of occurrence for individuals; and tabulating, based on frequencies of occurrence, those attribute combinations that are most likely to co-occur with the query attribute.

Claims (40)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

determining, based on representations of genetic sequences from a first user and a second user, overlap of genetic markers in the genetic sequences, wherein the genetic markers are respectively associated with physical or behavioral attributes, and wherein presence or absence of the physical or behavioral attributes are self-reported by the first user and the second user;

receiving, from a client device associated with the first user, a selection indicating the second user; and

in response to the selection and based on the overlap of genetic markers, providing, for display on a user interface of the client device, an indication of an overall degree of genetic similarity between the first user and the second user and indications of degrees of genetic similarity between the first user and the second user for one or more of the physical or behavioral attributes.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein specific values of the genetic markers have statistical correlations with individuals exhibiting the associated physical or behavioral attributes.

The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the statistical correlations between the specific values of the genetic markers and the individuals exhibiting the associated physical or behavioral attributes is based on analysis of genetic sequences of thousands or millions of individuals who do and do not exhibit the associated physical or behavioral attributes.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the genetic markers comprise single nucleotide polymorphisms.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the genetic markers are selected from an entire genome.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the overlap of genetic markers in the genetic sequences comprises comparing values of corresponding nucleotides in the genetic sequences to identify similarities and dissimilarities.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from the client device, a connection request to connect the first user and the second user;

providing, to the second user, a permission request to share information from a genetic sequence of the second user with the first user;

receiving, from the second user, a grant of permission to share the information from the genetic sequence of the second user with the first user; and

connecting the first user and the second user in a social network such that: the first user can provide the selection indicating the second user, and the first user can view the overall degree of genetic similarity and the degrees of genetic similarity.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more of the physical or behavioral attributes relate to consumption of certain substances by the first user or the second user.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more of the physical or behavioral attributes relate to a weight of the first user or the second user.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more of the physical or behavioral attributes relate to strength or endurance of the first user or the second user.

11. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, from a client device, a connection request to connect a first user and a second user, wherein representations of genetic sequences from the first user and the second user are stored in a database, and wherein genetic markers in the genetic sequences are respectively associated with physical or behavioral attributes;

providing, to the second user, a permission request to share information from a genetic sequence of the second user with the first user;

receiving, from the second user, a grant of permission to share the information from the genetic sequence of the second user with the first user;

connecting the first user and the second user in a social network such that the first user can provide, by way of a user interface, a selection indicating the second user;

determining, based on representations of genetic sequences from the first user and the second user, overlap of genetic markers in the genetic sequences; and

providing, for display on the user interface, an indication of an overall degree of genetic similarity between the first user and the second user and indications of degrees of genetic similarity between the first user and the second user for one or more of the physical or behavioral attributes.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein specific values of the genetic markers have statistically correlations with individuals exhibiting the associated physical or behavioral attributes.

The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the statistical correlations between the specific values of the genetic markers and the individuals exhibiting the associated physical or behavioral attributes is based on analysis of genetic sequences of thousands or millions of individuals who do and do not exhibit the associated physical or behavioral attributes.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein presence or absence of the physical or behavioral attributes are self-reported by the first user and the second user.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 11 , wherein determining the overlap of genetic markers in the genetic sequences comprises comparing values of corresponding nucleotides in the genetic sequences to identify similarities and dissimilarities.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing program instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a computing system, cause the computing system to perform operations comprising:

determining, based on representations of genetic sequences from a first user and a second user, overlap of genetic markers in the genetic sequences, wherein the genetic markers are respectively associated with physical or behavioral attributes, and wherein presence or absence of the physical or behavioral attributes are self-reported by the first user and the second user;

receiving, from a client device associated with the first user, a selection indicating the second user; and

in response to the selection and based on the overlap of genetic markers, providing, for display on a user interface of the client device, an indication of an overall degree of genetic similarity between the first user and the second user and indications of degrees of genetic similarity between the first user and the second user for one or more of the physical or behavioral attributes.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein specific values of the genetic markers have statistical correlations with individuals exhibiting the associated physical or behavioral attributes.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the statistical correlations between the specific values of the genetic markers and the individuals exhibiting the associated physical or behavioral attributes is based on analysis of genetic sequences of thousands or millions of individuals who do and do not exhibit the associated physical or behavioral attributes.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving, from the client device, a connection request to connect the first user and the second user;

providing, to the second user, a permission request to share information from a genetic sequence of the second user with the first user;

receiving, from the second user, a grant of permission to share the information from the genetic sequence of the second user with the first user; and

connecting the first user and the second user in a social network such that: the first user can provide the selection indicating the second user, and the first user can view the overall degree of genetic similarity and the degrees of genetic similarity.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein determining the overlap of genetic markers in the genetic sequences comprises comparing values of corresponding nucleotides in the genetic sequences to identify similarities and dissimilarities.
