Abstract

A method for isolating substantially pure carbon dioxide from flue gas is provided. The method can include combusting carbon based fuel to form flue gas; cooling the flue gas to provide substantially dry flue gas; removing N 2 from the dry flue gas to provide substantially N 2 free flue gas CO 2 ; and liquifying the substantially N 2 free flue gas CO 2 to form substantially pure carbon dioxide.

Claims (15)

1. A method for isolating substantially pure carbon dioxide from flue gas produced by a natural gas fired combustion boiler of a multi-unit residential or commercial building that is operably engaged to provide steam upon demand from at least one unit within the multi-unit residential or commercial building using domestic water to provide the steam for hot water, and/or steam supplied radiant building heater, the method comprising:

upon demand for hot water or building heat by the at least one of the multi-unit residential or commercial building occupants, initiating natural gas combustion within the residential or commercial combustion boiler to produce flue gas and provide the flue gas to an exhaust conduit;

using the residential or commercial combustion boiler to receive water from a domestic water supply and generate hot water for use by the building occupants and/or steam to provide radiant heat for the building;

after initiating natural gas combustion, removing tramp air from the exhaust conduit;

using building water supply to operate a condensing heat exchanger to cool the flue gas and provide a flue gas having less than 3% water;

compressing the cooled flue gas to lower the water content of the flue gas to less than 1%;

drying the compressed and cooled flue gas using a desiccant dryer to provide substantially dry flue gas having less than 10 ppm water;

providing the substantially dry flue gas having less than 10 ppm water to a pressure swing adsorption assembly and removing N 2 from the substantially dry flue gas to provide substantially N 2 free CO 2 ; and

liquifying the substantially N 2 free flue gas CO 2 to form substantially pure carbon dioxide.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the exhaust conduit is configured to receive the flue gas upon production, the method further comprising separating the flue gas into at least two portions and cooling one portion of the flue gas while allowing the other portion to proceed to the atmosphere.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the exhaust conduit is configured to receive the flue gas upon production, the method further comprising thermally coupling the combustion boiler water intake to a least a portion of the exhaust conduit and transferring thermal energy of the flue gas exhaust to the boiler water intake.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the cooling of the flue gas to remove water from the flue gas comprises condensing water from the flue gas and separating that condensed water from the flue gas.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the substantially N 2 free CO 2 comprises >95% CO 2 .

6. The method of claim 4 wherein the cooling the flue gas comprises first cooling the flue gas without condensing the flue gas, then condensing the flue gas.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the cooling the flue gas without condensing the flue comprises exchanging the heat of the flue gas with the heat of boiler water intake.
