Abstract

A power control circuit for use with devices that will be placed in a flammable sterilizing gas includes a bi-stable switch that is configured to produce an output to place the circuitry of a connected device in a run state or a sleep state. The bi-stable switch controls one or more transistors to drain energy from energy storage devices in the circuitry of the connected device to a level below an ignition level of a sterilizing gas. A remotely actuatable switch can be actuated from outside of a packaging in which the power control circuit is placed to cause the bi-stable switch to produce an output that puts the circuitry in the run state without removing the power control circuit from the packaging.

Claims (41)

1 . A power control circuit for use with a device having circuitry that is configured to be powered by a power source and operate in a targeted environment, the power control circuit comprising:

a switch connectable to the power source and configured to produce an output to transition the circuitry of the device between at least a run state and a sleep state; and

at least one transistor connectable to one or more energy storage devices in the circuitry of the device, wherein the at least one transistor is configured to respond to the output of the switch and drain stored energy from the one or more energy storage devices to at least a sleep level associated with the targeted environment for operating the circuitry of the device in the sleep state.

2 . The power control circuit of claim 1 , wherein the switch and the at least one transistor are configured to prevent ignition within a flammable environment.

3 . The power control circuit of claim 2 , wherein:

the flammable environment includes flammable sterilizing gas surrounding the circuitry of the device; and

the sleep level represents a level of the stored energy below an ignition level of the sterilizing gas.

4 . The power control circuit of claim 2 , further comprising:

a capacitor connected between the power source and the switch such that, when power is applied from the power source to the switch, the applied power operates the switch and control the output for causing the circuitry of the device to operate in the run state.

5 . The power control circuit of claim 1 , wherein the switch includes a bi-stable switch or a flip flop.

6 . The power control circuit of claim 1 , wherein the switch includes:

a first transistor and a second transistor;

a first resistor connected in series with the first transistor; and

a second resistor connected in series with the second transistor,

wherein the first and second resistors are configured to control current flowing through the cross-connected first and second transistors during one or more operating modes.

7 . The power control circuit of claim 1 , further comprising:

a transistor connected between the power source and the circuitry of the device, wherein the output of the switch operates the transistor to selectively connect the power source to the circuitry when the output of the switch operates the circuitry in the run state.

8 . The power control circuit of claim 1 , further comprising:

a remotely actuatable switch that is actuatable to control the switch and place the circuitry of the device in the run state.

9 . The power control circuit of claim 8 , wherein the remotely actuatable switch is actuatable without direct physical contact and without a direct electrical control signal.

10 . The power control circuit of claim 9 , wherein the remotely actuatable switch is a magnetically actuated switch.

11 . The power control circuit of claim 9 , wherein the remotely actuatable switch is controllable using light, shock force, pressure, or a combination thereof.

12 . A power control circuit configured to selectively place a device into a run state or a sleep state, the power control circuit comprising:

a control circuit that is configured to generate a control signal that operates a connected device in the run state or the sleep state, wherein the control circuit is remotely controllable to place the connected device in the run state or the sleep state; and

a transistor that is controlled by the output of the control circuit to drain stored energy from one or more energy storage devices of the connected device when the connected device is in the sleep state.

13 . The power control circuit of claim 12 , wherein the control circuit includes:

a driver circuit configured to generate the control signal; and

a remotely actuatable switch coupled to the flip flop circuit and configured to (1) receive an external stimulus from a source external to the device and (2) control the flip flop circuit to generate the control signal.

14 . The power control circuit of claim 13 , wherein:

the device is configured to be exposed to a flammable environment; and

the transistor and the control circuit are configured to reduce the stored energy to prevent ignition when the device is exposed to the flammable environment.

15 . The power control circuit of claim 13 , wherein the transistor and the control circuit are configured to transition the device from the sleep state and the run state when the device is removed from the flammable environment.

16 . The power control circuit of claim 12 , wherein the control circuit is connectable to a power source, the power control circuit further comprising:

a capacitor connected between the power source and the control circuit such that, when the power source is powering the control circuit, the applied power operates the control circuit and control the output for causing the circuitry of the device to operate in the run state.

17 . The power control circuit of claim 16 , further comprising:

a transistor connected between the power source and the circuitry of the device, wherein the output of the control circuit operates the transistor to selectively connect the power source to the circuitry when the output of the switch operates the circuitry in the run state.

18 . The power control circuit of claim 12 , wherein the control circuit includes:

a set of cross-connected transistors configured to drive the control signal;

a set of resistors configured to control current flowing through the set of cross-connected transistors, wherein each resistor in the set of resistors is connected in series with one transistor in the set of cross-connected transistors.

19 . The power control circuit of claim 12 , further comprising:

a remotely actuatable switch that is actuatable to control the switch and transition the circuitry of the device from the sleep state to the run state, from the run state to the sleep state, or both.
