Abstract

A powered fastener driver includes a driver blade and a drive unit having an output shaft for providing torque to move the driver blade from the bottom-dead-center position toward the top-dead-center position. A rotary lifter is engageable with the driver blade and configured to receive torque from the output shaft of the drive unit in a first rotational direction for returning the driver blade from the bottom-dead-center position toward the top-dead-center position. A kickout arrangement is defined between the lifter and the output shaft and configured to permit limited movement of the lifter relative to the output shaft between a first position and a second position. The kickout arrangement having a curvilinear slot defined in the rotary lifter in which a portion of the output shaft is received. Movement of the rotary lifter from the first position toward the second position causes the slot to move relative to the output shaft, while the output shaft remains within the slot.

Claims (36)

1 . A powered fastener driver comprising:

a driver blade movable from a top-dead-center position to a driven or bottom-dead-center position for driving a fastener into a workpiece;

a drive unit for providing torque to move the driver blade from the bottom-dead-center position toward the top-dead-center position, the drive unit including an output shaft;

a rotary lifter engageable with the driver blade, the rotary lifter configured to receive torque from the output shaft of the drive unit to rotate the rotary lifter about a rotational axis of the output shaft in a first rotational direction for returning the driver blade from the bottom-dead-center position toward the top-dead-center position; and

a kickout arrangement defined between the lifter and the output shaft, the kickout arrangement configured to permit limited movement of the lifter relative to the output shaft between a first position and a second position, the kickout arrangement having a curvilinear slot defined in the rotary lifter in which a portion of the output shaft is received,

wherein movement of the rotary lifter from the first position toward the second position causes the slot to move relative to the output shaft, while the output shaft remains within the slot,

wherein the curvilinear slot has an origin that defines an axis of the origin about which the rotary lifter is configured to rotate to shift the rotary lifter from the first position to the second position, relative to the output shaft, and

wherein the axis of the origin is non-colinear to the rotational axis of the output shaft, and

wherein an outer surface of the portion of the output shaft received by the curvilinear slot is configured to selectively engage segments of the curvilinear slot to apply the torque to the lifter.

2 . The powered fastener driver of claim 1 , wherein the slot is positioned interior to an outer edge of the rotary lifter such that the slot is formed by an interior wall of the rotary lifter.

3 . The powered fastener driver of claim 1 , wherein the rotary lifter is in the first position relative to the output shaft when returning the driver blade from the bottom-dead-center position toward the top-dead-center position.

4 . The powered fastener driver of claim 1 , wherein the driver blade includes a plurality of teeth spaced along a length thereof, wherein the rotary lifter includes a lifter body and a drive pin coupled for co-rotation with the lifter body, and wherein the rotary lifter is movable from the first position toward the second position in response to a reaction force applied to the drive pin by one of the teeth.

5 . The powered fastener driver of claim 4 , further comprising a spring biasing the rotary lifter toward the first position relative to the output shaft.

6 . The powered fastener driver of claim 4 , wherein the lifter body moves away from the driver blade in response to the reaction force applied to the drive pin.

7 . The powered fastener driver of claim 4 , wherein the lifter body is configured to rotate about the axis of the origin, from the first position to the second position relative to the output shaft, in response to the reaction force applied to the drive pin.

8 . The powered fastener driver of claim 7 , wherein the drive pin is a first drive pin of a plurality of drive pins coupled for co-rotation with the lifter body, and wherein the origin is coaxial with a second of the drive pins adjacent the first drive pin.

9 . The powered fastener driver of claim 7 , wherein the reaction force is directed along a line of action passing between the origin and the curvilinear slot.

10 . The powered fastener driver of claim 1 , wherein the curvilinear slot is defined by opposed curvilinear segments, wherein the output shaft includes a first engagement portion and a second engagement portion, and wherein the first and second engagement portions are configured to engage the opposed curvilinear segments when the rotary lifter is in the first position.

11 . The powered fastener driver of claim 10 , wherein the output shaft includes a third engagement portion and a fourth engagement portion, and wherein the third and fourth engagement portions are configured to engage the opposed curvilinear segments when the rotary lifter is in the second position.

12 . A powered fastener driver comprising:

a driver blade movable from a top-dead-center position to a driven or bottom-dead-center position for driving a fastener into a workpiece;

a drive unit for providing torque to move the driver blade from the bottom-dead-center position toward the top-dead-center position, the drive unit including an output shaft;

a rotary lifter engageable with the driver blade, the rotary lifter configured to receive torque from the output shaft of the drive unit to rotate the rotary lifter about a rotational axis of the output shaft in a first rotational direction for returning the driver blade from the bottom-dead-center position toward the top-dead-center position, the rotary lifter having a body and a drive pin coupled to the body; and

a kickout arrangement defined between the lifter and the output shaft, the kickout arrangement configured to permit limited movement of the lifter relative to the output shaft between a first position and a second position, the kickout arrangement having a curvilinear slot in which a portion of the output shaft is received,

wherein the curvilinear slot is positioned interior to an outer edge of the rotary lifter such that the curvilinear slot is formed by an interior wall of the rotary lifter,

wherein the curvilinear slot has an origin that defines an axis of the origin about which the rotary lifter is configured to rotate to laterally shift the rotary lifter and the slot from the first position to the second position, relative to the output shaft, and

wherein the axis of the origin is non-colinear to the rotational axis of the output shaft, and

wherein an outer surface of the portion of the output shaft received by the curvilinear slot is configured to selectively engage segments of the curvilinear slot to apply the torque to the lifter.

13 . The powered fastener driver of claim 12 , wherein the rotary lifter is in the first position relative to the output shaft when returning the driver blade from the bottom-dead-center position toward the top-dead-center position.

14 . The powered fastener driver of claim 12 , wherein the driver blade includes a plurality of teeth spaced along a length thereof, and wherein the rotary lifter is rotatable from the first position toward the second position in response to a reaction force applied to the drive pin by one of the teeth.
