Abstract

A bone fusion device provides stability to bones during a bone fusion period. The bones include, for example, the vertebrae of a spinal column. The bone fusion device comprises one or more extendable tabs attached to the bone fusion device by associated rotating means. The bone fusion device is preferably inserted by using an arthroscopic surgical procedure. During arthroscopic insertion of the device, the tabs are pre-configured for compactness. In this compact configuration, the tabs are preferably deposed along and/or within an exterior surface of the bone fusion device. After the bone fusion device has been positioned between the bones, one or more tab(s) are extended. In the preferred embodiment, the position of each tab is related to a positioning element and extending blocks. Typically, the tabs advantageously position and brace the bone fusion device in the confined space between the bones until the bones have fused.

a body having first and second ends;

an interior cavity deposed between the first and second ends;

a conduit providing a pathway from the interior cavity to outside of the body;

a first tab and a second tab physically separate from each other at both ends and positioned on an opposite side of the body from the first tab, the first tab and the second tab for bracing the bone fusion device in a space between the bones, each of the first tab and the second tab comprises an outer surface, an angled inner surface, a first side end and a second side end, wherein each of the first tab and the second tab is shaped such that the first side end is substantially larger than the second side end and a size of the tab in between gradually decreases while going from the first side end to the second side end;

a positioning element positioned through the first end and substantially within the interior cavity; and

an extending block coupled to the positioning element and comprising one or more angled surfaces abutting against the first tab and the second tab for moving the first tab and the second tab when the positioning element is rotated, wherein the extending block is configured to move from a first end of the positioning element at a first end of the bone fusion device to a second end of the positioning element at a second end of the bone fusion device adjacent to a head of the positioning element, to a final resting point past a center of the positioning element, to extend the first tab and the second tab.

2 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , wherein the positioning element is either a screw or a bolt.

3 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , wherein the extending block is a nut.

4 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first tab and the second tab further comprise one or more holes.

5 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first tab and the second tab are movable to a compact position such that the bone fusion device has a minimized form factor.

6 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first tab and the second tab are configured for a plurality of positions.

7 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , further comprising a bone graft material pre-deposited into the interior cavity before insertion of the bone fusion device between the bones.

8 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , further comprising a bone graft material that is applied after placement of the bone fusion device between the bones.

9 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , further comprising a rectangular shape.

10 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , wherein a material of the bone fusion device is biocompatible.

11 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , further comprising serrated edges on the first tab and the second tab.

12 . The bone fusion device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more pins and one or more slots for allowing movement of the first tab and the second tab.

13 . A bone fusion device for insertion between adjacent bones, comprising:

a hollow body having one or more holes along a length of the hollow body;

a first moveable tab and a second moveable tab physically separate from each other at both ends and positioned on an opposite side of the body from the first moveable tab, wherein each of the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab comprises an angled inner surface, a first portion and a second portion, wherein each of the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab is shaped such that the first portion is larger than the second portion and a size of the tab in between decreases while going from the first portion to the second portion forming the angled inner surface;

a positioning element positioned through a part of the hollow body and substantially within the hollow body; and

an extending block coupled to the positioning element and comprising one or more angled surfaces abutting against the angled inner surface of the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab for moving the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab when the positioning element is moved, wherein the positioning element is configured to move the extending block from a first end of the positioning element at a first end of the bone fusion device towards a second end of the positioning element at a second end of the bone fusion device to a final resting point past a center of the positioning element, to extend the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab.

14 . The bone fusion device of claim 13 , wherein the positioning element is either a screw or a bolt.

15 . The bone fusion device of claim 13 , wherein the extending block is a nut.

16 . The bone fusion device of claim 13 , wherein the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab further comprise one or more holes.

17 . The bone fusion device of claim 13 , wherein the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab are deposed to at least partially lie within the hollow body of the bone fusion device such that the bone fusion device has a small form factor.

18 . The bone fusion device of claim 13 , wherein a material of the bone fusion device is biocompatible and utilized with vertebral bones.

19 . The bone fusion device of claim 13 , wherein bone graft material is applied after insertion and placement between the bones.

20 . The bone fusion device of claim 13 , wherein the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab have a textured surface.

21 . The bone fusion device of claim 13 , wherein the the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab are coated with a porous material.

22 . The bone fusion device of claim 13 , further comprising serrated edges on the first moveable tab and the second moveable tab.

23 . A bone fusion device for insertion between bones comprising:

a body having a first end and a second end;

an interior cavity deposed between the first end and the second end;

a first tab and a second tab physically separate from each other at both ends and positioned on an opposite side of the body from the first tab, the first tab and the second tab for bracing the bone fusion device in a space between the bones, each of the first tab and the second tab comprises a first portion, a second portion and an angled inner surface between the first portion and the second portion, wherein each of the one or more tabs is shaped such that the first portion is larger than the second portion and a size of the tab in between the first portion and the second portion decreases while going from the first portion to the second portion;
