Abstract

A suture transport system is disclosure for placing a flexible member along a tunnel, the system including a means of transporting a flexible member along a tunnel from a first opening in the tunnel through to a second opening at an opposite end of the tunnel, such that the flexible member extends from both the first and second opening. The system also includes a means of capturing a portion of the flexible member at the second opening, to inhibit the flexible member from retracting into the tunnel second opening. The means of capturing includes an aperture for capturing the portion of the flexible member.

Claims (22)

1. A shuttle system comprising:

a flexible member construct having a first end and a second end;

a means of transporting the flexible member construct along a tunnel through at least one bone of a joint from a first opening of the tunnel through to a second opening at an opposite end of the tunnel, such that the second end extends from the second opening;

a guide having a handle end and a distal end, the distal end configured to engage the at least one bone of a joint adjacent the second opening and capture the flexible member construct second end, wherein the flexible member construct second end is absent an expandable element;

wherein, once captured, the guide is configured to draw the flexible member construct second end around the at least one bone of the joint, away from the second opening and towards the first opening.

2. The shuttle system of claim 1 wherein the guide is a drill guide, configured to guide a drill during formation of the tunnel through the at least one bone of the joint.

3. The shuttle system of claim 1 wherein the guide includes an opening configured to receive the means of transporting the flexible member construct therethrough.

4. The shuttle system of claim 1 wherein the guide distal end includes at least one flexible arm, configured to capture the flexible member construct second end and thereby capture the flexible member construct second end with the guide distal end.

5. The shuttle system of claim 1 wherein the guide distal end includes at least one flexible arm, configured to selectively assemble to the guide.

6. The shuttle system of claim 1 wherein the flexible member second end is a loop end.

7. A shuttle system comprising:

a flexible member construct having a first end and a second end, the entire second end free of an expandable element;

an insertion instrument configured to insert the flexible member second end through a bone tunnel from a first tunnel end to a second tunnel end, and place the flexible member second end at the second tunnel end; and

a guide configured to engage the bone adjacent the second tunnel end, the guide including a means to capture the flexible member construct second end.

8. The shuttle system of claim 7 wherein the guide engages the bone adjacent the second tunnel end with a guide distal end, the guide including a handle end including an opening for slidably receiving the insertion instrument therethrough.

9. The shuttle system of claim 8 , wherein the guide distal end includes a deflectable arm, the insertion instrument configured to deflect the deflectable arm and capture the flexible member construct second end with the deflectable flexible arm.

10. The shuttle system of claim 7 wherein the flexible member second end defines a bight end.

11. A shuttle system comprising:

a flexible member construct, free of an expandable element;

an insertion instrument having a handle end and a distal end, the distal end configured to engage a flexible bight end of the flexible member construct, and insert the flexible member construct through the bone, from a first external surface of the bone to a second external surface of the bone; and

a capturing tool including a handle end and a distal end, the distal end configured to engage the bone second external surface and capture the flexible bight end.

12. The shuttle system of claim 11 , wherein the capturing tool distal end includes a deflectable arm, the insertion instrument configured to deflect the deflectable arm and capture the flexible member construct bight end with the deflectable flexible arm.
