Abstract

An object feature visualization system is disclosed. The system may include a computing device that generates video-mapped images to project onto physical objects. The video-mapped images may include features to be projected onto the objects. The projection of a video-mapped image onto the physical object allows for the visualization of the feature on the object. In some examples, the computing device receives a feature selection for a particular object, and generates a video-mapped image with the selected feature to provide to a projector to project the video-mapped image onto the physical object. In some examples, a user is able to select one or more features for one or more objects of a room display via a user interface. The system then projects video-mapped images with the selected features onto the physical objects. The system may allow a user to save feature selections, and to purchase or request additional information about objects with selected features.

Claims (44)

1. A feature visualization system, comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium that stores instructions; and

a processing unit that executes the instructions to:

receive user input indicating to simulate how at least a portion of at least one surface in a physical space looks with at least one feature, the user input specifying a time of day other than a current time of day;

in response to receiving the user input, select an image that corresponds to the at least one feature;

map the image to the at least the portion of the at least one surface to generate a mapped image;

modify the mapped image to generate a modified mapped image to compensate for a difference between actual lighting on the at least the portion of the at least one surface at the current time of day and lighting corresponding to the time of day; and

use at least one projecting device to project the modified mapped image onto the at least the portion of the at least one surface.

2. The feature visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the processing unit further executes the instructions to initiate a purchase for the at least one feature.

3. The feature visualization system of claim 2 , wherein the processing unit initiates the purchase in response to additional user input.

4. The feature visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the processing unit uses multiple projecting devices to project the modified mapped image onto a single surface.

5. The feature visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the processing unit uses the at least one projecting device to project the modified mapped image onto multiple surfaces.

6. The feature visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one feature comprises at least one of a wall covering, flooring, wood, tile, stone, laminate, concrete, carpet, a color, a pattern, wallpaper, or linoleum.

7. The feature visualization system of claim 1 , wherein:

the current time of day is day; and

the time of day is night or evening.

8. A feature visualization system, comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium that stores instructions; and

a processing unit that executes the instructions to:

receive user input indicating to simulate how at least a portion of at least one surface in a physical space looks with at least one feature, the user input specifying a time of day other than a current time of day;

in response to receiving the user input, select a mapped image that corresponds to an image of the at least one feature mapped to the at least the portion of the at least one surface;

modify the mapped image to generate a modified mapped image to compensate for a difference between actual lighting on the at least the portion of the at least one surface at the current time of day and lighting corresponding to the time of day; and

use at least one projecting device to project the modified mapped image onto the at least the portion of the at least one surface.

9. The feature visualization system of claim 8 , wherein the compensating for the difference includes changing shading.

10. The feature visualization system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one feature includes at least one texture.

11. The feature visualization system of claim 8 , wherein the processing unit obtains the mapped image from a database.

12. The feature visualization system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one feature comprises multiple features.

13. The feature visualization system of claim 8 , wherein the processing unit is operable to add the at least one feature to an online shopping cart.

14. The feature visualization system of claim 8 , wherein:

the current time of day is night; and

the time of day is day or evening.

15. The feature visualization system of claim 8 , wherein the processing unit is operable to communicate with a manufacturer of the at least one feature.

16. The feature visualization system of claim 8 , wherein the processing unit obtains the image from a database.

17. The feature visualization system of claim 16 , wherein the processing unit generates the mapped image.

18. A feature visualization system, comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium that stores instructions; and

a processing unit that executes the instructions to:

receive user input indicating to simulate how at least a portion of at least one surface in a physical space looks with at least one feature, the user input specifying a time of day other than a current time of day;

in response to receiving the user input, determine an image that corresponds to an image of the at least one feature mapped to the at least the portion of the at least one surface and modified to compensate for a difference between actual lighting on the at least the portion of the at least one surface at the current time of day and lighting corresponding to the time of day; and

use at least one projecting device to project a modified mapped image onto the at least the portion of the at least one surface.

19. The feature visualization system of claim 18 , wherein the compensating for the difference includes changing shadowing.

20. The feature visualization system of claim 18 , wherein:

the current time of day is evening; and

the time of day is day or night.
