Abstract

A method according to certain embodiments generally involves operating a system including an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a base station. The base station includes a nest including an upper opening having an upper opening diameter and a lower opening having a lower opening diameter less than the upper opening diameter. The lower opening is accessible from within the base station. The method generally includes landing the UAV within the nest such that a portion of the UAV is accessible via the lower opening, releasably attaching a load to the UAV, and operating the UAV to deliver the load to a destination.

Claims (26)

1. A charging station for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) having a plurality of legs that define a size of an effective landing area of the UAV, the charging station comprising:

a nest having a plurality of planar sidewalls, each planar sidewall of the plurality of planar sidewalls having an inner surface and is adjoined to an adjacent planar sidewall of the plurality of planar sidewalls, the plurality of planar sidewalls arranged in a conical configuration about a central axis of the nest that provides an upper opening at an upper portion of the nest and a lower end of the nest, wherein the upper opening is larger, and the lower end is smaller, than the effective landing area; and

a plurality of electrical contacts positioned along the inner surface of at least a portion of the plurality of planar sidewalls,

wherein the conical configuration is oriented to facilitate direct slideable displacement of an electrical contact surface of the plurality of legs along one or more of the plurality of planar sidewalls from a first location between the upper opening and the plurality of electrical contacts to a second location at which the electrical contact surface is in direct contact with, and electrically coupled to, one of the plurality of electrical contacts.

2. The charging station of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of planar sidewalls define a lower opening at the lower end.

3. The charging station of claim 2 , further including a base plate positioned below the lower opening.

4. The charging station of claim 3 , wherein the base plate is coupled to at least one sidewall of the plurality of planar sidewalls.

5. The charging station of claim 4 , wherein the base plate is pivotally coupled to the at least one sidewall of the plurality of planar sidewalls.

6. The charging station of claim 5 , wherein the base plate is pivotally displaceable to position at which the base plate covers the lower opening.

7. The charging station of claim 2 , wherein each planar sidewall of the plurality of planar sidewalls is triangular in shape.

8. The charging station of claim 2 , wherein each planar sidewall of the plurality of planar sidewalls is trapezoidal in shape.

9. The charging station of claim 1 , further including a cover that is displaceable between a closed position and an open position, the cover positioned over the upper opening when at the closed position.

10. The charging station of claim 1 , wherein the upper opening has a diameter that is larger than a diameter of the lower end.

11. A charging station for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) having a plurality of legs that define a size of an effective landing area of the UAV, the charging station comprising:

a nest having an upper opening, a lower opening, and a plurality of sidewalls, the plurality of sidewalls arranged in a conical configuration along a central axis of the nest and between the upper and lower openings, the upper opening having a first width across the upper opening in a direction perpendicular to, and intersects, the central axis that is larger than the effective landing area of the UAV, the lower opening having a second width across the lower opening in a direction perpendicular to, and intersects, the central axis that is smaller than the effective landing area of the UAV; and

a plurality of electrical contacts positioned along an inner surface of at least a portion of the plurality of sidewalls,

wherein the plurality of sidewalls are oriented to facilitate direct slideable displacement of an electrical contact surface of the plurality of legs along one or more of the plurality of sidewalls from a first location between the upper opening and the plurality of electrical contacts to a second location at which the electrical contact surface is in direct contact with, and electrically coupled to, an electrical contact of the plurality of electrical contacts, the plurality of sidewalls further oriented to be separated from at least a portion of the plurality of legs at a location between the upper opening and the second location when the electrical contact surface is in direct contact with the electrical contact.

12. The charging station of claim 11 , further including a base plate positioned adjacent to the lower opening.

13. The charging station of claim 11 , further including a base plate that is coupled to at least one sidewall of the plurality of sidewalls, the base plate positioned below the lower opening.

14. The charging station of claim 11 , wherein the nest is attached to a ceiling or roof of a base station.

15. The charging station of claim 11 , wherein each sidewall of the plurality of sidewalls is triangular in shape.

16. The charging station of claim 11 , wherein each sidewall of the plurality of sidewalls is trapezoidal in shape.

17. The charging station of claim 11 , wherein the second width across the lower opening is a diameter.

18. The charging station of claim 11 , wherein the first width across the upper opening is a diameter.

19. The charging station of claim 11 , further including a cover that is displaceable between a closed position and an open position, the cover occupying a plane and is over the upper opening when the cover is at the closed position, and is displaceable along the plane when the cover is displaced from the closed position.

20. The charging station of claim 19 , wherein the cover comprises a plurality of panels.
